Are there going to be any amendments to VAR for next season, not heard anything, such as the offside and the stupid lines and refs having to go to the pitch side monitor

FIFA has kicked Mike Riley to the kerb and has said they will oversee all implementation from now on worldwide. So refs will be told to use it as originally intended. With refs going over to look at the monitor for red card and penalty offences.

They are talking about trialling the daylight rule for offsides. I'm not a fan of that though as the interpretation could change with each ref, and can be randomly affected by body parts. It just needs to be done with the naked eye and not lines. If it's too close to call then it stands.

I think someone mentioned the handball rules are being tweaked slightly again too.

Think how many ridiculous decisions would have been overturned/corrected with the simple tweak that the referee can pop over to a screen on the side of the pitch to get a second watch of an incident.

It would have made so many of the controversial decisions (like the villa keeper catching the ball and jumping in his own net or the free kick given against us v Chelsea) null and void. Simple word in the referees ear - “you might want to have another look at that” - done.

But it seems common sense has gone out of the window for those in charge of football.

Thanks for the reply. It was obvious something had to be done. I would favour the daylight rule rather than the lines rule that we have now, although it wont be perfect. The handball rule certainly needs to change.
As far as Mike Riley is concerned his dismissal hasn't come quick enough.

Fuck VAR.
But yeah, it should be better being used properly. The silly lines are definitely gone, but offside needs to just be watch a couple of replays and judge with the naked eye whether it is clearly off, any doubt don't give it. Hate to always bring up other sports when discussing this, but works well enough in rugby.

The handball rule is just bad, it's not necessarily the fault of VAR, but the rule was changed because it could be checked by it.

Jinks - You're assuming all the ref's will have the balls to admit their own mistakes. I can think of a few like Dean, Moss, Atwell that won't.

I would also have an ex-player assisting with the VAR as most of the refs have never played the game at a professional level.

It's still a case of "who watches the watchmen?". And the answer is still "the watchmen". Won't want to call each other out, and won't want to correct their own mistakes.

Refs shouldn't need to go and look at the monitor, it's a waste of time, just get competent people in charge of the VAR stuff who have the balls to tell the man on the pitch he's done something wrong. Watching the ref draw a little square in the air and jog over to the side line is wank.

The entire VAR panels should be independent of PGMOL and FIFA trained. They should also swap leagues every year so no bias can grow and become involved.

There should be an ex ref, an ex player involved in the team too.

Also playback should be in real time. I can't remember what game it was and it took 4.5 minutes to make a decision. Bloody ridiculous .

Then they start getting fined/banned for obvious mistakes. At the moment referees are far too protected. They need to start being held accountable for their mistakes.

Won’t happen, though.

At least they have an opportunity to right some wrongs from this season moving forward.

I don’t get this concept of how a referee watching it on a shitty little screen on the side of a pitch is going to come to a better decision that a different referee watching it on multiple massive screen in a nice warm studio with a cup of coffee. No other sport thinks that.

Both great suggestions.

Well the idea is not to put pressure on the VAR to overrule his mate out on the field and make him look bad. If he's willing to do that himself then that's fine.

Neither of which would have been affected by VAR, irrespective of who is operating it. One was a failure of a different technology, the other not part of the review system anywhere in the world

Agree, if someone at work spots a mistake or oversight in someone else's work and they're better placed to correct it when time is at a premium then you let them do it. You don't get the person who came to the wrong conclusion to go and waste time having another crack at it, they can review it later and educate themselves for next time.

If they are a work colleague at the same level within the organisation then undermining them alters your working relationship and makes you reticent to do it. That's where we are at

I remember when we played Man U last season, I think it was the cup game. One of the Man U defenders, I can't remember who, took Jota out with a terrible tackle. Martin Atkinson gave a red card, he had consulted his assistant and confirmed it was violent action , but VAR overturned it to a yellow.
I heard later when the refs had there next meeting that Atkinson was not happy, as he told them about the consultation with his assistant and that the red card should not have been overturned.
