Live Match Discussion: 2020/21

Well that was fun, at 10 men and a goal down Southgates plan was to just stay in the game until 20 minutes to go. Putting Calvert-Lewin on the left bringing on Henderson when you’re a goal down? Really.
The games lost by two brain dead decisions one from Maguire the other Referee.
One of the inconsistent performances I’ve seen from any official. Simple case is if he gives Denmark penalty then he has to give the one for the tackle on Coady. Booking players for dissent but for cynical or tackle fouls.

If there`s any justice Coady has done more than enough to keep his place in the team. Maguire should be benched now.

Coady had a good game and nearly got an equaliser.

You can’t blame Southgate when you go down to 10 men and the ref gifts a penalty to the opposition. You can however question why he’s had 2 holding midfielders in games where we should be trying to dominate.

Reality is if Maguire doesn’t get sent off I think England win the game, certain players are getting in on 2018 reputation Pickford, Walker, Maguire and Trippier to mention.

Phillips is absolutely dreadful, as bad as Jake Livermore. A proper Taylor-era pick.

Whatever anyone thinks of Pickford and Maguire as footballers, both are manifestly in awful form so why are they playing?

Atrocious subs, Henderson for Rice at 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go, really?

At least Coady played well again.

Only saw the first half but Walker and Rice were our best two players in that half. They both moved the ball around well and covered a lot of ground in attack.

We have spent years collectively forgiving Doc his trespasses in defence because of what he offers in attack. Walker however, huffs and puffs but with zero end product particularly as he has no left foot it seems. . James has a better left peg but they left him on the right. Leaving Kane up front alone was just cretinous. Utterly ineffectual if he cant link play and when we did finally get midfielder's close enough for him to link play in the final third we looked more threatening and won set pieces. Pickford is a sympathy pick. Even the justification for his "ball playing and penalty saving" looked off. Comprehensively beaten for the kick (you can blame him for conceding it but not for getting beaten by it) his distribution was off and as for that last minute free kick , he had one thing to do and that was hoof it into the box and he singularly failed to do it. Pope and Henderson are streets ahead. Maguire is #headsgone and needs a complete break from the game. He is better than he has been playing but yesterday made Roger Johnson look world class. Absolute dreck display from the first couple of minutes. Phillips looked like a competition winner. Repeatedly gave the ball away or lost it in dangerous areas. Was Rashford even playing? Southgate's substitution's were even worse than the original team selection and why he went to 4-4-1 when chasing a game with the players he had on the pitch god only knows. Phillips for Grealish was an obvious substitution for me but it never materialised. At least Grealish would have been closer to the isolated Kane.

That was as bad as the Euro defeat to Iceland. Abysmal watch and we need a miracle to win the group.

A defeat against Denmark, when you have had a man sent off and the ref gifted the opposition a penalty is not comparable to the one against Iceland. Denmark have lost just two of their past 40 international matches, keeping clean sheets in nine of their past 11 games.

Well my eyes must not work properly :icon_lol:. Penalty aside I thought Walker was pretty good. Also thought Phillips was mostly decent - I'd rather play him plus someone else than Rice plus someone else... (Why both, Southgate!?)

If all options are fit, who would people play either side of Coady?

Mings - Coady - Keane? :spaz:

I know its sacrilegious to say it but how bad was Marcus Rashford, apart from the spell of only passing to Danish players in the first half he seemed thoroughly disinterested.

He was shocking. If we're going to play a narrow front three (and a right footed left wing back to tuck in too, why? Who knows) then Rashford isn't one of them. It should be 2 of Grealish, Mount, Sancho (Sterling when fit) sat in behind Kane. Rashford just doesn't fit anywhere in a front 3 as Solsjear continually fails to find out.

Yeah my front three would be Sterling, Kane, Sancho. Rashford hasn't started the season well but he was great last season.

I think at moment I'd go

Pope

Gomez Coady Maguire

TAA Henderson Rice Chilwell

Sancho Kane Sterling

The midfield is stodgy but I don't see someone like Foden/Grealish/Mount playing that deep in that system. Let the wing backs play pretty high and the wide forwards can play nearer to Kane.

Needs Maguire to find his form - he tends to start seasons slow, he'll come good I think.

I'd almost angle towards Bertrand as a left sided CH in a back three. Good defender, good footballer. Played there before too.

Maguire is like a bad League Two player at the moment, it's negligent of both Solskjaer and Southgate to be picking him. Reminds me of Paul Butler in his ultra fat 2002 phase (eventually he did get dropped and our results improved, and he went away and sorted himself out. Kind of).

I'd have the same team as YoungWolf but with Foden in for Rice.

Don’t think I’ve seen a player have as bad a game as Maguire yesterday for a long time. Might be temporary but he should be nowhere near the team. Southgate bangs on about players in form but his picks seems to speak louder than words.

Pickford crocks VVD with a horrendous challenge, doesn’t get punished for it. I know offside was called, but what’s all that about?

He really is a terrible keeper and person. Needs depositing in the nearest skip.

This game is just annoying. Switching off.
