Wolves 1-0 Palace: FA Cup Rd3 Verdict Thread

Is it me or does Cutrone not look 6ft tall? He looks like a bit of a short arse to me

Shouldn't be heading it.

Even if you don't know you have time for a touch (he did), then it's a volley there, 100%. The only way a header is working from that chance is if you hurl yourself at it, Keith Houchen style.

Movement was good though to lose the defender and stay onside.
It was a bit of a weird ball to be fair - over the defenders head, and then dipped to Fabio’s shins. Weird.

still should have done better, but wasn’t easy.

RAN wasn't timewasting. It was us doing our usual thing of taking forever to offer any kind of option for the thrower.

Plus other players took way longer over throws and didn't get booked. Coote is a dreadful referee but this isn't new. How he managed to miss Neto being tripped from about a yard in front of him I'm not sure. Thankfully he had nothing important to do today.

Oh, he did miss Butland handling a backpass. Doesn't matter if he picks it up, touch it with your gloves, free kick.
I actually think he saw the back pass incident too and still didn’t give it. Dreadful refereeing display.

I am glad that we got players into their box tonight. I think that was the reason Adama got time to get that shot away.

Dont think the team sheet at the start at the match can be useful at all, Silva was at one point the left winger, Dendoncker the am and Neto the center forward. Is this to conserve energy in a high pressing game?

That was as easy as you like and a thoroughly deserved win that possibly should have been 2 or 3. Think the subs showed we have got a bit of quality to bring on now especially once Podence comes back. Palace were shit but it's not always easy to beat a side that comes and plays like that especially as disinterested as they looked in the first half. Thought on the whole Neto, Neves, Semedo, Traore and Donk were very good. No one really had a bad game, do think RAN is asked to hold a bit more with Semedo on the other side and that's something he is having to get used to as i'm sure he's not had to be that disciplined before. This is causing him to just be a bit hesitant on the ball but he always wants it and is always an outlet, once he becomes more comfortable in that role i think we will see the best of him.

On Silva, most criticisms of him i see are i guess football fan criticisms. The general he should have scored, how did he miss? He's not very good and so on. Yes he definitely should do better with his first headed chance but his overall game for what he is is excellent. He's banged in goals in youth football because he's a better footballer than his peers, not because he is bigger, faster, stronger etc.. Right now he isn't up to speed with English football, he isn't strong enough or quick enough for what is needed consistently at this level but his movement and his touch and knowledge of where to be is really good. He's not grown into himself yet and while we definitely didn't want to expose him to this much football it will only benefit him. There was one touch in the second half where he let it come across him, opened up to shoot but wasn't quite able to get there which just showed his strengths and weaknesses right now, biggest thing is he won't lose those strengths as it's ingrained in him but he can work on his weaknesses. I hope fans are really patient with him because there's some player in there. I understand that for £35 million some people want here and now and we have taken a gamble as it's not nailed on that he fulfills his potential but that's Fosun's decision and it's going to be a while before we see whether they were right, now is not the time to judge with him.

Neves did well - ran the centre of midfield (& Dendoncker next to him was a big plus)

Not going to comment on Silva as he's doing what we shouldn't be asking him to just yet & trying as hard as he can.

Neto & Semedo were very good and gave us an out most of the game - Nelson & Traore seem to be getting an understanding which bodes well.

Then again Palace were extremely poor & no real fight in them.

Fabio is playing in a very exposed position and filling massive shoes. He's learning on the job, we have to give him time.

Criticise the decision to make him Raul's understudy if you need a target, now he has (at least) Cutrone to share the burden with
If you are going to share the burden then for me Cutrone gets the lions share of the play, and Fabio does the 20 min cameos.

still should have done better, but wasn’t easy.

It wasn't a weird ball at all, the flight of it was pretty low the entire time and it came around the defender more so than straight over him, there was over 5 yards between him and Silva. It was a bit of an awkward height by the time it came to Silva and unfortunately he was slightly ahead of the ball by that point too, probably would've been best trying to chest it down but there was quite a bit of pace on it so there's always the risk of struggling to take enough off it and it getting away to the keeper before he can get a shot off.

what's the excuse for his bad miss on the corner header, then?

look, I've defended Fabio as much as anyone in the past weeks as his positioning is generally pretty good and he has some good ideas in him. but how many sitters has he missed? much as i like the look if him, cutrone looks to be the better option for the time being

Don’t think anyone is disagreeing with you on Cutrone being a better option now, that doesn’t mean we should write Fabio off now though.

Sitters:

- On his debut vs Stoke
- Spurs at the end
- Tonight

Don't think anything else falls into that bracket. The header off the corner wasn't. The near post chance vs Chelsea wasn't. The shot against the post vs Villa wasn't. If I'm forgetting something particularly glaring then forgive me.

Raul misses some horror shows too, quite often as well, happens to every striker. What you don't want is someone doing a Kevin Doyle 2013 and running towards the corner flag, too scared to even have a go.

I don’t get how people are saying Cutrone has to start based on tonight when he touched the ball about 3 times. I think he should start but not because of that!

id be more worried if Fabio wasn’t getting anywhere near the ball in the box. He’s got the instinct you need. He’s going to be a pretty simple goal scorer, nothing flashy I think long term, with the potential to be lethal if we get it right.

I don't think the Spurs chance was a sitter tbh
