Wolves 2-3 West Ham: Verdict Thread

Pretty much what YW said.

We have a lot of improving to do as a team defensively, but I prefer to see us (usually clumsily) attempt to create chances rather than bore us all with over-cautious passivity.

No point in reverting to the safety net of an extra CB, let's see out the season with this framework and hopefully improve the results it yields.

Our two goals were lovely btw, great run and cross by Adama and beautiful link up between Ped and Fab

WJ at 0-0 needs to hit the target.
WJ needs to score that tap in and then Neto misses into an empty net.
Neves unmarked heads miles over.
WJ worked a yard and for some reason refused to shoot from a promising position start of second half.
Donck blazes into stands when if he hits the target he probably scores.

There’s at least one goal out of that collection.

The first goal doesn’t happen if Donck takes the foul. Saiss either has to show him down the line, or force him inside and stay with him, not square up and nearly sat on your arse giving him a free run at goal. (Or just engage him early and wipe him out).

The second I’ll just say is a good goal.

Third Neto and Neves are tracking, both inexplicably stop and let him run. Then puts into Bowen who breezes past RAN. Then Rui beaten at near post.

We should be stopping at least one of them. But we didn’t and it’s another loss.

A defensive disaster class first half, just left ourselves to much to do second half.
Back 4 with Semedo-Boly-Coady-Jonny I can understand tonight the personnel in the back 4 weren’t capable. Agree a tactical foul would have done nicely at some point in goals 1 & 3.
Could argue v weaker opponents we’d manage better but overall it’s another Monday night with a shit result to match in fact a crap 4 hours with injury news.

Coady and Boly would be fine with a decent nippy tough DM in front of them. Jonny is fine. Semedo worries me. Not getting started about Rui again. My views are known.
Fabio looked decent. Traore was hit and miss. Neto couldn’t hit a vows arse with a banjo. WJ has zero confidence in himself. Time to spend some money on a couple of proven stars more portugeezers !

We can't just have a style of play that only works when our best players are fit FFS

Three.of the back four tonight are our first choice defence

Not sure what alternative is with current available players.
Well we’ve played Coady between two CHs for most of theory seasons... both Coady and Saiss are slow, and poor when facing a forward running at them. I just don’t see the point in persisting with them when neither will play in a back four next season if we have any intention of getting back to previous season’s finishes.

That's fair enough, I just think that others stand to gain playing in this system before the end of the season, and we create so much more like this. I don't think it's out of the question that Dendoncker and Neves can improve their positioning to defend counter-attacks (both did it better from about 30 mins in, when it was too late of coourse), either.

Well at least we didn't just roll over at 0-3. We look so much better going forward with this system but toothless atm. However don't think we can play 4 at the back without Boly and Jonny. Great run by Traore and good finish by Donk. Thought Neto was poor tonight, although his pass for Silva's goal was good, excellent finish too, unfortunately we just couldn't create another chance.
Rui has been beaten at his near post too often this season and Coady/Saiss will get pelters but for two of the goals one West Ham player ran from deep past/through 4-5 defenders with no challenge....powderpuff and unacceptable, whereas when we tried to break they were happy to take a yellow.

You seem to have forgot Netos half a dozen shots in to row Z

I think Nuno will revert back to a 5 on Friday and want to keep it tight. I think he’ll be cautious in not losing to Fulham and them closing the gap.

Or maybe WH didn’t commit players forward in the same way?

It’s incredibly arrogant, as Wolves supporters, to get all moany about finishing 7th twice and saying it’s not good enough and we need to improve. Small incremental improvements would have seen us improve. This rush to we must play a 4 - at very best it will need a whole new load of players & hopefully an 8th place finish; and most likely will lead to an eventual relegation.

How many goals has Semedo been at fault for now? I think it's 5 or 6?

Credit where credit is due though, thought Fabio did well great finish and tried to get stuck in. Still not up to starting, but we don’t seem to have any striker up to starting.

Yeah but they weren’t particularly clear chances. Some of those listed are golden opportunities.

I don't think Wolves supporters have done any of those things.

It was Nuno who thought we'd gone as far as we could with our previous incarnation.

Tbh I think most people who are wanting to see a 4 now are doing so because Nuno clearly is hot for it, so we may as well do it now when we realistically aren't going up or down anywhere anyway.

I'd have been happy to continue tweaking and upgrading the 343/352 this season but the club decided to go another way

I know this'll sound silly but with zonal marking do the midfielders only chase players up to a point, for the first two goals both Donk and Neves stopped chasing their player as soon as they got near the box ?
