Let's talk about Nuno....

On a more positive note the margin between 7th and 17th is not that great. West Ham were poor last season but getting a competent goalkeeper and a couple of decent signings has improved them massively. Similarly Villa signed a forward who knows where the net is and have gone from almost certain relegation to comfortable mid-table. It needs players signed to go into the first team straight away not in two or three years. I just hope the owners fund it - with judicious sales if necessary - and the funds are spent wisely.

Spurs Arsenal Chelsea all could have won something this season. Chelsea are in the cup final , Spurs were in one and Arsenal could be in one. The point was even with that level of success they binned off managers in the last 12 months or so. We were gone early doors in the carabao and sacrificed ourselves in the cup to saints and have been poor in our league campaign and yet we back our manager and set up because of their previous record. That does not exempt them from justifiable criticism. The usual suspects turn up to ridicule and make smart comments to deflect but in reality this whole season sucked and you can’t just put that down to covid, injuries or bad luck. Nuno deserves great credit but also constructive criticism on his methodology of small squad nucleus as it will always leave us vulnerable.

I repeat, this is not the squad of 2011 and should have played far better football that we have endured. Big big summer for Wolves

I just don't get this - this season has been a write-off - why would you back Nuno, get his players in, assimilate the players to the formation, and then get rid after 6-10 games, and risk another write-off - for me, you back him and that means for the majority of next season, or you give someone else a go, with a full pre-season and their own recruitment.
Just how it is isn’t it? People get the benefit of the doubt, unless your Watford. He’s got credit in the bank but he’s eating through it, there are mitigating circumstances (although not to the extent some try to push). By 10 games in the credit will be gone, or he will have fixed it and we will all be happy again

Any earlier and you’re trigger happy, any later and it’s too late where the new man can’t fix it.

What would being in the bottom 6 (or even bottom 8 depending on preseason expectations) after 30 games tell you which you didn’t already know after 10.

It's not unheard of in the PL for a new man to come in partway through a season and do well with what he's been left. It's not like we're so amazing and unique that no-one else could fashion anything worthwhile with our playing assets.

We'd all prefer managers to have full pre-seasons etc but the PL is messy. Not advocating any of this, and I certainly wouldn't want Wolves to become wasteful or a basket case club, but most of the top 6 we aspire to are run like this (we'd obviously have to find a different model)

This gets repeated with complacent regularity, so why the gnashing of teeth when someone has a pop at Nuno or a favoured player? I'm not talking about someone disagreeing, I'm talking about people being told they're not fans, or somehow inferior for holding that opinion.
maybe it would help if people read whole posts rather than just jumping on one line to prove their argument/pov.........thats me done on this subject anyway, DW has started a new more interesting thread.

All good points - I suppose I really want some reassurance that Nuno knows where he wants us to go, and how we might get there - I know there have been injuries, and there's a pandemic going on, but it has felt very muddled this season and without any clear goal in sight. If I were Fosun, I would be wanting a very clear vision from Nuno about the evolution of Wolves under him in the next 2-3 years before spending anything of any significance.

I kinda get that, but if you look at our situation from the outside without Wolves glasses on, is it realistic to expect us to compete with these kinds of clubs given the big disparity in resources available? Purely from being in the PL since it was established these clubs have had access to way more resources than we have, and that's before you even factor in how much their owners have been able to invest.
We finished above Arsenal and level with Spurs last year, so, yes, I absolutely do think it's reasonable to expect us to be competitive with those clubs, particularly given the resources our owners have.

We should at least be in the Euro mix, and perhaps we would have been, without injuries, but I wonder if there's something fundamentally wrong with the wider set up at the moment. Why is Nuno suddenly bereft of ideas? Why have the players turned into a pub team? Why are all our new recruits duds? Has something changed behind the scenes that has affected everone's motivation? Can't blame everything on Covid, and injuries have been around as long as football. This club had been running like a well-oiled machine for three seasons since Fosun took over. This year it's more like a well-oiled stag party.

Why are all our new recruits duds?
I'm quoting you just because this has been said 2/3 times today.
Our recruitment this season was as follows:
Semedo - poor to begin with, just about competent in the main, but in the last few weeks has looked decent (didn't see the game yesterday). Both he and the manager have said he struggled with the pace and intensity of the PL at the start. I don't think he'll ever play to his cost, but I think he'll be a decent enough RB.

Vitinha, Hoever, RAN, Fabio all signed to have minimal impact this season. Will probably all be here next

Marcal - low cost investment in a crock, who unsurprisingly stayed a crock.

Willian Jose - Desperate but necessary move, having him has been better than not doing so. I don't think we'll sign him

The players we signed aren't duds given the age and longer term view taken on 4 of them - they may all be fixtures in the side for the next decade for all we know. It was the strategy which was flawed and looked so at the time

Fair point, and let's hope you're right, but they certainly haven't improved our side much this season. As you say, it was the strategy that was flawed, perhaps obviously so, in which case why was it pursued in the first place? This is part of the point I was trying to make about the behind-the-scenes stuff we have no clue about.

I think we thought the upcoming change re Brexit for recruitment meant this was the only window to get them in. There would be no later opportunity.
To be fair, I think it was. I doubt any of them would have enough points, so we were in may ways forced to have a "youngsters first" policy to some extent.

I believe the thought was that if we waited until they did have enough points, not only would we have to pay a lot more for them, but we'd have had to compete with potentially more attractive teams.

Not being able to get Ruben Dias because we couldn't afford him probably affected that thinking.

Kevin Thewell director of football or whatever he was left, perhaps he was the glue holding it all together? Maybe he was better than we gave him credit for?*

*may not be entirely serious, I would say bantz obvs, but people who say that tend to be pricks

I hope Nuno can turn this around but it is pretty rare a manager stays more than 4-5 years in the PL until they start losing the players..Sir Alex and Wenger are exceptions..maybe im wrong but i think it will be difficult for Nuno to turn this around

I've not been critical of that, I've been critical that if it had to be one or the other ie the future to the dertiment of the present then it was flawed. I think short term needs were underestimated

I agree. I think we thought we had enough to take the gamble. The injuries have shown we did not. A miscalculation is probably how I would dress it up, and hopefully a lesson learned.

It's a well-trodden path in a manager's life-cycle tbf. First, those that are unhappy at performance levels are entitled/not real fans; then they're reveling in it; and then it's actually somehow their fault.

There have been plenty of mitigating factors, absolutely. But there are also failings within those.

"Transition season"

This one actually puzzles me, because whilst there's been plenty of evidence that we're moving away from something, there's been precious little that we're moving toward something else, particularly with the ball. But that's by the by - if we accept that this is a transition season, then I've got to say that attempting to do that with 15 knackered players, a 2-week pre-season, and only one 1st team signing (despite losing two from from an already small squad) was frankly fucking brain dead.

"injuries have killed us"

Well, yes, and Raul's is a freak accident. Jonny, Podence, Boly and Neto are all important players that have missed spells injured - but we've spent two years sucking the cocks of our sports scientists because we don't get injuries; I was slaughtered for saying it was lucky, and that we couldn't rely on it. Now we're getting them, we're unlucky, apparently. We can't have it both ways.

"It's a pandemic"

It's a pandemic in West Ham too, no? There are no fans anywhere?

We haven't failed in transition because of injuries or the pandemic; we've failed because of the coaching and the recruitment, ultimately. We're left with a group of players that can't play how they used to play, and can't play how they're going to play, and we're just resorting to the oldest/most experienced eleven available, with little-to-no identifiable tactical plan. Recruitment has been absolute dogshit, for years. In the last 5 windows, there's only Neto that I wouldn't return for a refund. Yeah, Semedo's certainly improving, but still nowhere near a £30m right back ffs.

We're a mess, and we either need loads of players to change, or we need fresh ideas from new coaching staff. I think what it comes down to is that the manager and most of the players were really, really good at the low-block, counter attacking style - but only a handful are capable of changing, and tbh I don't think Nuno is one of them. We've wasted a season, and we'll probably end up wasting another one next year too. At the end of the day, I support Wolves, not Nuno FC - if he can't start to get a tune out of the tools he's got at his disposal - which he's definitely not - then that's something that only ever ends one way.
The injuries or lack of, was down to the Sports Science guys.

They have this season managed the players well.
The difference being

No close season
18 months football without a rest, if you read the Athletic look for the 2 day close season with Wolves. It made a fantastic read.

My only criticism was about switching styles, we should have done that next season after a full pre Season.

This season is a clusterfuck for quite a few teams

Liverpool,
Spurs
Are struggling to make the top 4
FFS West Ham are more likely to make it.

The players need a rest, I would like the players to get 2 months off, but they wont most of Our players will go to the Euros.

Hopefully Portugal will go out early, and the players can hit the beach.

Next season we go again. There wont be much movement until after the euros transfer wise there never is.

Also not many clubs will have the funds to buy players.

I sometimes co-host Global Radio's football show on a Saturday afternoon.

There is a Man Utd, Swansea, 2 West Ham Fans, and me, we were discussing the summer transfer window in relation to Haaland, Pogba, etc.

None of us are expecting much movement at the top echelons of the players most Clubs just cannot afford to go and splurge the cash.

If the likes of Man Utd, Real Madrid, Barca are unable to go and spend €80million, the rest of us will not be in a position to spend €50 million.

The only teams probably largely unaffected by the pandemics affect on finances, are Man City and PSG. Wether they actually go out and spend that sort of Cash remains to be seen, my gut feeling is they wont, they will try and use the financial impact to there advantage.

Doing the radio show and doing research for it, has made me a lot more mellow, and Objective when it comes to Wolves.

I am not expecting more than 2 or 3 new players this summer, and I expect 1 experienced player late 20's and 1 or 2 younger players around 21 / 22

Tbf Spurs would have finished midtable if it wasn’t for Covid. Kane was out for the season and they were dreadful. So they are where they should be.

Liverpool’s form was unsustainable. Also they lost all their CBs to non-Covid related injuries. They are probably where they should be.

Moyes is just following his Everton blue print. Not outrageous they are where they are.

The table is pretty much a standard table IMO

It was a stroke of Genious to getting Lingard from Man Utd. I have always rated the guy, but even his greatest fans would not have predicted his recovery.

He is the reason they are where they are.
