The Squad 21/22

Fact of the day: We currently have more players out on loan (22) than we have fit senior players at Compton (20, until Neto/Jonny/Jordao come back). I mean, that's weird, isn't it.

So does that mean Olofinjana has more players under him than Lage?

Seyi is at Grasshoppers now. A sentence I wish I could have typed in 2005.

Matt Jackson is in charge of them I suppose.

That seems to be our one positive!

We've got loan deals for players that look solid and they're actually playing (albeit in limited minutes in some cases). Tells you how bad Seyi was at his job...

There is by default going to have to be a significant investment, potentially even Palace-style in a numbers sense next summer.

Ruddy, Marcal, Saiss and Moutinho are likely to depart at the end of their contracts.

Neves, Adama and Neto (if he returns to his former self) are all going to be in demand again, particularly if we're trudging around the depths of the league and I cannot imagine we'll be able to keep hold of them even if we outperform current expectations.

Boly, Semedo and Dendoncker will be entering into the final year of their current contracts. I wouldn't be rushing to extend Boly's given his injury issues. Hwang and Trincao aren't our players.

That leaves Sa, Hoever, Coady, Mosquera, Ait Nouri, Jonny, Podence, Gibbs-White, Jordao and Raul as players on the books at the moment who have some degree of certainty in their contractual situation. Five of those are players with little to no experience at this level.

It doesn't look very promising from a future planning perspective at the moment.

Yep it's next summer where the ineptitude of this window will really bite. Barring a sensational January (not going to happen).

Well I hoped we might have been able to move on from Saiss, but looks like we won’t. So he will probably be extended.

Ruddy will sign again if our other backups aren’t ready to step in.

Marcal will get an extension if he stays fit

Moutinho no idea, if he’s still doing it and he wants to stay then we will probably extend as well.

Donck has an option to 2024, Semedo we have a two year option. Boly will get an extension if we want to keep him.

So it’s only really the big 3 who are the problem, 2 of which we have people in on loan as direct replacements, so then only Neves.

But a lot of those extensions you would like to only be squad players, so that’s a lot of first XI holes to fill, which we haven’t been very good at of late, which heaps even more pressure on getting the CM and CB recruitment right when Neves is sold, Moutinho retires and Boly and Saiss are past it.

Cheers Punts. I'd forgotten about the option on Semedo and wasn't aware of the situation with Donck.

Semedo is our biggest outgoing in FFP terms at £9m a year - with any sense we'll engage the option next summer and then it'll drop to £3m over the final 3 years of his deal.

I've updated this again and with no incoming business looking likely.

With Adama gone and Neto/Hwang not quite ready to return, we're quite light in those wider roles as it stands, but overall, it is probably the position with most depth and quality in the squad when they are all fit and healthy.

I imagine Jordao and Giles will go out on loan, leaving us with the following:

Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Semedo, Neves, Moutinho, Ait-Nouri, Trincao, Raul, Podence

Ruddy, Gomes, Hoever, Jonny, Dendoncker, Cundle, Neto, Hwang, Fabio

That leaves Boly, Mosquera, Marcal and Chiquinho out of the typical matchday squad. Boly is done, Mosquera I can't imagine really becoming a fixture for the remainder of the season, Marcal will inevitably get crocked again soon and Chiquinho will likely flit between the first team and the U23's.

thought Giles went out on loan this week?
appreciate the updating.

Amidst all the gloom the squad actually looks decent for next season even if all the out of contract players leave.

Sanderson, Giles and Gibbs-White have all had very good seasons at Championship level and Cundle will be adequate back up too. Hoever is probably done here but a few forum members seem to rate Bolla and he can't be much worse in any case. Also fully fit Jonny and Neto. Silva has improved this season (low bar I know) and Hwang can do a job.

No idea if Jordao is any good and Shabani obviously an unknown quantity.

This summer we can get away with recruiting 1 CM but they need to be of a level that will come in and improve the first team. This will be key to keeping Neves too.
