Southampton 0-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I like to win the game, not the XG cup. I didn't get the excitement over losing. Much rather win a game like yesterday than lose notionally playing well.
Who had said the they don't like winning?

Yesterday was one of those 'play crap, come home with 3 points' games, which is fine as far as it goes, enjoy the positives while we can. The next 3 games will show where we are. Play well and get 4 points and I think we'll be fine. Play as we did yesterday and come away with 1 or 2 points and the writing will be on the wall I'm afraid.

Last season we had a team confused and on the decline, half a dozen games with a new manager who's had little first team investment, and we're really getting pissy because we aren't both playing champagne football and winning?

I don't want to hear any more comments on here about how top 6 fans are entitled

I'm not convinced he can in the long run (a better team than Southampton would probably have exploited the spaces we left in front of the back three/five much more than they did, ie not at all). I'm glad we won. We bloody needed to.

But what people can't do is say they were bored with Nuno's football, and say we were shit even when we won last season for the most part (that has some validity), then say that was a good performance. It was the same as we played in a lot of games in 2020/21. Sometimes we won 1-0, sometimes we got beaten.
You're arguing a point that no one is making. I haven't seen a single person say it was a "good performance".

It seems completely obvious to me that Bruno has been forced to play this style, in order to grind out some results (something you said he "wasn't capable" of).

So far, he's come in, attempted to play 4 at the back - realised pretty quickly we don't have the players to do it. He's publicly, on more than one occasion, asked for the players/tools to be able to do this, but wasn't backed by his employers (Cheers, Jeff). So he's adapted the style - in a matter of weeks, I might add - to a more attacking style - something pretty much everyone on here wanted. Unfortunately, despite dominating some very good sides, the results haven't come - so here we are, rather than persisting with that and getting sacked before January, he's had to go back to this kind of performance but we've picked up some points.

Whilst I appreciate you're desperate to criticise the manager and always have been since his appointment, I can't say I agree with you right now. He might not be our manager in a years time - a lot of that will depend on how the rest of this season goes, but the poor bastard had 17 outfield players at his disposal yesterday.

Well, I watched the whole game again this morning, (I know , the things in do for wolves) and whilst in have commented that we have gone back to nuno ball, I think I have to be fair and build in an anx factor for the players,
They would have been more desperate than us for the points, and clearly were playing a cagey game from the start. Whilst resorting to Dunkirk tactics after our goal, I can understand why they did it.
They wanted a win at all costs, and bless em , they got it. I think we will see a different performance against Newcastle. Maybe even from marcal.

Awful lot of negativity following a much needed win.

don’t think anyone has or will say we played well, however there are still quite a few positive to take.

raul scoring, sometimes all a player need is a goal to kickstart their season

clean sheet

lage willing to make changes to the team, albeit would like boly to come back in and RAN and Neves

Sa’s performance - still needs a rocket up his arse sometimes with ball at his feet, but some good saves and great assist. Not having that some of them were irrelevant because ultimately they would t of counted, shows he was alert. If he lets one through his legs only to be saved by an office decision people would criticise and say how lucky he was

yes, it was a grim watch, but it’s 3 much needed points, installs a bit of confidence in the team etc. Winning becomes a habit, abs playing poorly and winning is a bloody good habit to have

i have no doubt the style of performance won’t become the norm (ala nuno last year) given Bruno’s first few games. If it does then he will rightly be criticised and questions asked about what the point in changing managers was to produce the same thing. I won’t be criticising him after 1 performance like that.

happy this season to finish mid table, see the start of a more progressive brand of football, and hopefully he will be backed next summer to bring in the players he wants

RAN should be available for the Newcastle game, I think he's earned a go and Marcal has also earned the bench

Dreadful game of football. Dreadful journey back.

We won, Raul scored and we kept a clean sheet. That’s about the extent of it.

Hopefully next week provides better entertainment.

You're doing a lot of moaning for someone who's pleased.
I'm pleased Raul scored and we have 3 points.

I'm not pleased with the performance. I know nuance is a struggle for some but you can be pissed off with the performance whilst still acknowledging there were some positives.

How anybody can be happy with yesterday beyond those points is the bit I struggle with.

This, in spades, all day.....or whatever sound bite you want

You're arguing about something that doesn't exist, I haven't seen one post that says they are happy about the performance, you're just putting words in people's mouths

I was advised of moaning. I have explained what I'm unhappy about which the poster you haven't quoted seemed to miss with his pithy comment.

Have you watched the game now?

Nope, apart from motd, don't have access to any other platform, which is why I haven't commented on the game itself apart from the 2 or 3 obvious plus points. I don't really need to as every other poster that has seen it has said we were crap overall.

You've posted a fair amount in a thread for a game you haven't seen.

Just read the match thread... dearie me.
I haven't seen the match so shouldn't really give any opinions....but fuck it, its hyperbole city it appears,
Got to be honest, its very strange criticising others peoples live opinions in a match thread from a game you haven’t watched.

It’s bad enough seeing all the captain hindsight’s criticising the match thread after the game when they have watched it.

I did actually look through the match thread on the way back and it echoed pretty much my opinion at the time. The game was shit, we created no chances after the first minute, Marcal is terrible (as a WB), Podence gave the ball away everytime he had it and Hwang is basically Andy Keogh.

In bold for me is spot on. No use playing great and coming away with nothing. No one is going to stand that for long. Props to Bruno for actually seeing this and implementing it before the destruct button is pressed. He has more about him than i thought.
Let's hope that we can mackle along till January and Jeff gets the cheque book out to get us what we need.

Why hang onto the shit and ignore the good stuff?

Isn't the important thing that we got through the poor performance and struggle to eventually get ahead, hold on and come away with 3 points, a clean sheet and a massive morale boost for our best player, new manager and whole team? It was clear to see what it meant to the players.

Are people saying they'd have preferred us to play them off the park and lose narrowly?

What a load of purist shite
