With Jose Sa head and shoulders the form goalkeeper in the Portuguese ranks will he grab the number one shirt for the World Cup, or will Rui Patricio get one last hurrah for the World Cup as a thank you for all those years of great service..

We all know that Fernando Santos is a bit of a dinosaur manager and has many brain farts during his tenure, but surely the amount of form for a long stretch this season has to count for Jose Sa. Rui has had a continuation of poor form from last season going into his Roma form so come on loyalty can only take you so far.

Sa has 2 others ahead of him with regards to Portugal, so not really a Him or Rui question.

I know nothing about the other 2 keeper though.

If Portugal get through the play offs then I would fully expect Rui to play his final World Cup. His form was actually decent at the start of the season for Roma but a couple of fuck ups recently. Sa has got away with his brain fart moments from earlier in the season.

Anthony Lopes is the long standing #2 keeper for Portugal. Been first choice for Lyon since 2013. He's steady, just a 7/10 keeper.

I love what Portugal has done for the Wolves team and all that but I am hoping that they do not make the World Cup this year!

Off the radar question.......

If the Premier League stops for 5/6 odd weeks to cater for the World Cup in November/December 22 - how will they make up the fixtures lost ?
How will they manage the congested list of fixtures over Christmas with players just barely back in the country ?

Will the season finish later , or will they just have a whole pile of mid week fixtures ?

It begins a week earlier and finishes a week later. I guess the rest will be made up midweek.

Pretty sure there's no break scheduled after the World Cup finishes. Basically a week later we're off and running again, if a load of your players went all the way to the semis or final then tough.

The EFL is only stopping for the group stages.

Isn't Portugal's manager a big ol' dingus?

I wouldn't trust him to start Sa over Rui even if it was the correct decision.

Yes. He's a shocking manager. He picks William Carvalho over Ruben Neves. He largely ignored Diogo Jota until he signed for Liverpool. He picks Gonçalo Guedes full stop.

I'm not convinced at all that they'll beat Italy (assuming both make the playoff final, they should).

Prem League will kick off 6th August. 16 games then 13th November will stop. Resumes Boxing Day (WC Final is 18th December) and last day of the season will be the 28th May

International manager's often stick with their favourites in goal, especially if their mistakes have only happened at club level. England's number one hasn't been the best English keeper for years

I'd have thought Rui will keep his spot, if fit, regardless of form. International managers are a weird bunch. We have the same issue in England as Tony has alluded to. Pickford will keep getting picked (and in fairness, he's never really let England down), even though there are better "in form" English goalkeepers.

Think Pickford has got back to something like his best this season.....he's a massive twat obviously but not sure there's many better English keepers atm.

Aaron Ramsdale is, statistically, the best English keeper in the league. Nick Pope is actually putting in better stats than Pickford this season too.

Pickford has a save % of 65% this season. Jose Sa has 85%…

But all moot, as Pickford is undoubtedly England’s number one, and Rui is the same for Portugal. International managers are odd.

I agree. He works well in the system. If Sa was English , he would work well in that system too. The reason Pope and Ramsdale dont oust Pickford is their footwork and distribution. Popes is awful, and thats a shame as the rest of his game is very strong. I dont know enough about the other goalkeepers in the portugal squad but they must be something special if they are ahead of our Jose. I was never a great fan of Patricio for us. I thought that his stats for the last two seasons were average at best , very poor the last one and I think Sa has enabled Lage to play a slightly higher line. In a straight race , Sa is well ahead of the 2022 Patricio but as you say Jinky, International managers are odd.
