New - The things that really annoy you

"It's coming home" has so much MAGA energy it's unreal.

Y'alls women are absolutely kicking ass, though.

Wasn't aware there was a hint of poking fun at yourselves in it; certainly the outlets using the phrase don't seem to be self-aware about it.

We can talk about "the FA" next if y'all wanna get into it.

Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
They're so sure
That England's gonna throw it away
Gonna blow it away

As for the FA it was the first so the FA, in the same way it's The Open not the British Open. You don't need to reverse fit the name just because others have appeared

It's exceptionalism, which is how I'm drawing the line to MAGA.

Drives me nuts, but that's old ground. I don't actually want to get into it, if I'm honest.

Not really watched much of the women's Euros (didn't watch the men's apart from the final), but what the heck is it with the substitutions? Player "in", player "out"?!? Is that a BBC thing?
It's on and off ffs 🤦🏼
It's a UEFA thing and has been for years, well before we played in the Europa League

There's countless examples you could cite as to how exceptionalism exists within our country and even within football. Fans going around Europe 'conquering' town squares singing about German bombers and World Wars would be good examples. 3 Lions isn't

Three lions is about English football getting everyone’s hopes up, and ultimately falling short, because England seem to be perennial under achievers.
The 2 world wars and 1 World Cup is a well known chant to be sang in squares around Europe.
Henning Wehn a German comedian says “ that chant is so funny because it’s aimed at the Germans, it’s fine we’ve had 4 world cups and 1 world pope since then”

At least we don't call it the World FA...

Fair enough. Don't pay much attention to international football, and obviously haven't paid enough attention to UEFA club competitions.

"This is the FA. There are many like it, but this one is ours".

Alternatively "We are the very first country to have organised a collective football association, what shall we call it? I think The Football Association sounds good". Nobody is ever going to call it the English FA in the same way only weirdos in England call it the EPL

I’m under no delusion that this is an argument I would ever win tbf.

But I will call you out for it. 😘

I think it's a strange hill to die on. Go on the politics threads and there are pages upon pages where people give examples of how they hate what this country has become, I gave some football examples earlier, I just think you are aiming in the wrong direction

You don’t say the American NFL, MLB or NBA and nor does anybody else.

The fact Americans have the World Series and call the Super Bowl winners World Champions would devalue your argument somewhat.

Trust me, that shit grinds my gears just as badly.

Because the "World Series" is decidedly not a "World" Series, just like the Super Bowl champs are decidedly not "world" champions.

I get that you can make the argument that they are de facto world champions purely on the basis that few other countries play baseball or football to the extent Americans do, but that doesn't mean I agree that we should just accept the title "Best in the World" out of hand when most of the world wasn't taking part in the first place.
