Wolves 0-2 Brentford: Verdict Thread

Semedo is obviously a better player than Doc, but he's contributed zilch in the PL with us. Doc was a much more effective player for us. If Adama is getting shit for his lack of contribution over the last 43 games then Nelson can have a bit too.

I thought Neto was the reason everyone was fine with Jota going? Saiss is hardly the reason we finished 7th, and Boly hasn't even played so far

Boly has been available the last 3 league games but not used. “Traore gets shit so let’s give Semedo some to” is a bizarre statement. It’s not just about his goal scoring he’s improved massively in his defensive work which is ultimately his priority.
Saiss has contributed well over the last 3 seasons scored 7 goals which isn’t bad for CH another player who contribution over the years is over looked. Whilst we’re on Jota yes he was great and explosive at times he also had prolonged injuries and long runs of poor form to.
People need to stop re-writing history with Nuno as poor as last season was he still left the next manager with a healthy club to come into.

Zero of our forwards would be wanted by other clubs? Maybe not Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Utd, (we are currently not in their league)but every other team would be definitely interested in Traore, Jiminez. Leicester were in for Trincao I think?
I'm astounded at the lack of patience with Raul
No one is interested in Traore or they would've tabled a bid.

Raul needs time but it's clear he's frustrated with himself and that's not good. Other than the header I can't remember a chance created for him yesterday.

Everyone wants Raul to do well, something needs to change though because right now it's hurting us.

Is it game time he needs? Losing the headband? Is Bruno using him in the wrong way?
I think it's absolutely gametime he needs, probably needs to simplify his game a bit and possibly change his role a bit to a more traditional striker till he gets back up to speed.
The main issue is he's been our only regular goal scorer in the league for 3 seasons, we need an alternative which we don't have.

Not even our record signing?

That header was pretty much the only clear cut chance we created yesterday (he should probably do better) and that's a big concern. His role has never been as an out and out striker, I feel he needs to simplify his play sometimes but he obviously has a lot of self belief. I'd stick with him for now but maybe play someone closer to him I.e. 2 up top or similar.
I won't get into yet another discussion about Traore...he had our other half decent chance in the first half, running through the middle and shooting just over.

Hwang showed flashes of real promise when he came on yesterday, I think there’s an argument to be made that he should be given a chance alongside or instead of Raul until Raul finds his feet. I also think, and have thought for a while, that we lack a strong physical presence in midfield. Moutinho and Neves are fine footballers, but they are quite small and lightweight and when teams outnumber them in the middle like Brentford did yesterday, they don’t have the strength to cope. IMO.

I put a caveat in my post about Traore. Judging Jiminez and Trincao on what they've done this season I stand by my view that nobody top half would want them. Obviously there's a good chance both will improve rapidly but on current form neither look like scoring which is a pretty fundamental part of a forward's game.

The point of my post was that I think a lot of people over-rate many of our players and whilst most performed well under Nuno that was in a completely different set up. Lage has his work cut out to play the way he wants with the players at his disposal and if our dismal points return goes on for much longer the R word is definitely in the conversation.

The problem is his squad was built over four years to play a particular style and by changing the style without giving Lage at the very least a dominant centre half that can cope with a high line we have made things much harder than they could have been. It's like asking a cricket coach to play attacking cricket with Tavare and Boycott.

I don’t think anyone thinks he’s working with nothing do they but we do have issues in the squad which as you said in an earlier post i think will lead to games like yesterday. We should have at least 9 points but decision making and execution have let the team down in vital moments. That has to change and we need better decision making in those moments but i do think fans are panicking far too much after yesterday.

The football is much better to watch and overall and we are definitely creating more chances but Bruno can’t make the players more clinical. We just have to create even more chances and he has to still tweak a few things for that to happen.
I agree there's an over reaction to yesterday's defeat which is pretty much driven by who the opposition is. Equally there was a blasé 'someone is going to get a pasting' response to the first 3 games because of who the opposition was despite the same signs of wastefulness, poor decision making and soft goals conceded being there for all to see. As for the football being better to watch if you are benchmarking it against last season then for the 2 other home games I think that's undeniable. Yesterday though belonged right in last season, particularly with the failure to overcome a team biting in midfield and the resolution being to give it to Adama ASAP and hope for the best

Agree with an earlier post, and it’s a great post, other than the last sentence TBF
Getting rid of Coady ASAP would be very reactive and further destroy confidence.
Play the strongest back four, which would not include Coads, in these type of games to allow a further midfielder (whoever that may be) when teams are defensively organised, your Burnley, Brighton’s, and now Brentfords of this world, then revert to a three with him when you have to face a Chelsea, Man U or Liverpool.
I still see Boly and Mosquera as our best defensive partnership to give us a base to build on

Club or squad?

Club seems pretty dysfunctional and light on football expertise, but that's not on Nuno.

As for squad, there's talent, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since finishing 7th and Europe (especially if you're Adama).

It's a very imbalanced and frankly stale squad with not much variety for a new manager. Nuno has some responsibility for that. A better transfer window would obviously have helped.

Regarding Semedo, his priority isn't defending while he's playing wing-back. That's why we're playing three 'centre-halves'!

I'm not digging him out, but if we're talking about contributions, are we a better team offensively or defensively with him? He can't score and doesn't assist either, so what exactly is he contributing that Doc didn't and Adama isn't (relative to their positions)? Let's be fair here. For the money we paid, he's pretty bog standard

Terrible performance with absolutely no positives to take whatsoever. Nothing we did came off, the lack of goals is very concerning but in truth, we didn't really threaten all game.

This felt very much like a Nuno game, struggling to break down a 'lesser' side, not finding ways to break them down but have to give Brentford some credit, they looked far more up for it than we did. Their time wasting was very frustrating but England is to blame for it, not once did he pull them up on it.

Joao continues to take crap corners, Neves seems to have given up free kicks, Marcal was terrible.

Matty Cash was half the price, but we don't look into the Championship unless it's 10pm on deadline night

One last comment and then I’m going out consign this game to history
In terms of not creating clear cut chances, from my vantage point I saw two opportunities where with a bit more guile we could have passed into virtually an empty net but fluffed our lines at the vital moment. This is why Vardy, Kane, Salah are top of the goal scoring table, they are instinctive, ruthless and natural strikers.

Are you saying our strikers are not as good as Vardy, Kane & Salah ???

Missed the game, watched the replay as live and CBA to read 11 pages of verdict on that waste of 90+6 minutes. Brentford are an effective team rather than a good one and we are almost the polar opposite. I'm not ready to write off Brunoball just yet, but unless we start generating some end product I can see his time here being like an expensive fireworks display: full of oohs and aahs (although we didn't even look decent most of the time yesterday), but entirely devoid of useful content and a pile of ashes before November is out.

1 of them was Hee-Chan megging the defender in the penalty box and setting it up for a sure fire goal that any of the 3 strikers you mentioned would get. We just don't have players who get in front of defenders and beat them to the ball. Trincao i think was the culprit in the former example.
Vardy's goal against us was a classic example of a striker getting in front of the defender. We don't seem to be even practicing that in training.
