Between 1968 and 2015 more than 1.5 m Americans were killed by gun crime.
Total American casualties of war from the birth of the country to now is just over 1.2m

Absolute madness, guns aren't an issue 90% of the time in sensible well rounded individuals (even then there are still accidents and incidents that reinforce they are dangerous instruments of death)

The fact is that a larger than acceptable proportion of the population aren't well rounded and sensible to allow gun ownership as a right.

The whole basis of the argument for retaining gun ownership for all is completely flawed.

Only recently we had the trail of Callum Wheeler who admitted the murder of PCSO Julia James. That was horrifying enough never mind the thought of what might’ve happened if that individual had been able to access firearms easily.

We’re already seeing the escalation in people carrying knives on the defence basis they need to protect themselves from others that do with bad intent, it’s a difficult spiral to get out of.

It’s a warped logic that we’d be in a better world where a Julia James would be safer by carrying a gun herself.

It's sad that the point of this speech was merely UBC (Universal Background Checks), but on the bright side, basketball is a very powerful cultural motivator in this country.

Maybe I'm trying too hard to be positive about things.

Very powerful stuff and shows how many people are fed up with the current state of affairs.

How powerful the NRA is - it is still holding a big conference on Friday - in Texas! Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and trump are all due to speak. Attendees will not be allowed to bring their guns.

A school district in Texas has closed all its schools for today and tomorrow after receiving credible threats of violence. This included finding an AK-47 at the home of one suspect.
A man climbed over the wall into the playground of an elementary school just 2 miles from here on the same day as the Uvalde shooting. The police were needed to tackle him.
Most schools in San Antonio close for summer this weekend and quite a number of parents have chosen to keep their kids away from school for the rest of the week.
People are really worried - but will still vote for the party that chooses to do nothing.

Very sad.

Rumours that some parents are very unhappy with the police response to the shooting. It took 90 minutes from the first 911 call to the shooter being shot.

Ernie Zuniga - the tweeter - is a local tv presenter and many years ago I was an occasional guest on his morning news show. I used to take puppies and kittens that were up for adoption.

Police being slow to react to a problem in a largely non-white area? You don’t say!

The official version of what happened in Uvalde is constantly changing, but right now it appears that:

Federal police were made to wait outside the school for an hour because Texas police would not permit them to enter.
Parents were pepper sprayed and/or arrested to prevent them running into the school to rescue their kids.
Some parents managed to do that anyway.

There's gonna be a lot of blame going around, and sure to be some lawsuits.

Flags at half-mast everywhere here today, more effort is put into moving flags than preventing kids being killed.

That reminds me of a quote from Billy Connolly years ago, when he was visiting an immaculate cemetery/memorial somewhere in the states. It was something along the lines of:

”America certainly knows how to look after its dead. It’s just a shame it doesn’t care so much for its living”.

I went to Arlington...it Is indeed immaculate. Kept like a gold course

Outlawing guns will not stop nutters. Outlawing guns will stop protection from authoritarian nutters like Biden.

A debate exits.
