Arsenal (H) - verdict

Oh and our fans flap more than Lonners - The shite being spouted (not on here) when Podence wasn't in the squad was truly embarrassing

As I’ve said before the CL was a nice thought. Priorities now are ensuring we get back into the Europa league next season. What’s stopping us isn’t defeats it’s the draws. Out of the 13 games we’ve drawn 4 of them were at home to Burnley, Southampton, Newcastle and BHA games that we’d have been looking to win but didn’t.
CL qualifying requires regular winning runs throughout the season we just don’t have that capability just yet.
To get CL now would require us to win all of our remaining games which is unlikely.

He's had a bost up, Franksy.

Dead balls were a big thing yesterday. They're awful at defending them, we're normally pretty good in those situations. Didn't put in a single good one despite numerous opportunities.

The 1st throw in caused trouble and you could see why we used that tactic but every throw after it was shite. Mout with a dreadful corner and every clever set play we tried never came off. Fine margins on those I guess, we get 1 of them right and we are in.

It's fine margins all the way. As I say I don't think much of Adama as a striker but if he scores after 20 seconds then Nuno looks like a genius.

Second one was an easier chance though. Should have gone round Emi (who was very good, remember when we picked Ikeme ahead of him? Good one Ken)

Emi was good. Controlled his area brilliantly. How have they had him sat on the bench or touring clubs whilst Leno has been flapping at crosses for 18 months I don't know

I can't believe Emi is wasting his career as a bit part player at Arsenal when he could be first choice at many top flight clubs

Who cares that Podence has to go back to Portugal for a while. Its not like he ever plays any way.

MGW is perhaps the one we should have brought on earlier, he’s pretty much the only one we have who can play as an attacking CM. That would have meant taking Neves or Moutinho off though.

TBF Neto playing behind Raul & Traore worked pretty well earlier in the year

To be there or thereabouts (brucey style!) against teams which have all won the premier league and also be competing in Europa in our second season back in the PL is pretty bloody fantastic.

Spiersy hit the nail on the head that we don't have options right now if Mouts or Jimenez etc aren't performing, and that will probably be our biggest challenge - how do we get excellent players to come in whilst not being guaranteed a starting position. I think the answer will be the Neto route - and that will take time

I take it if one of the teams already in Europe wins the FA cup 7th gets Europa? If so then Burnley could be doing us a big favour at the moment.

8th if City's ban is upheld.

Thought we played well enough up until we started really having to chase the game which really played into Arsenal's hands. Conceding the first goal at that time was a real hammer blow and it was always going to be a tough ask from there on in.

Can't afford to be missing the chances we threw away yesterday though. Adama's miss was really poor.

We had 0.99 xG and Arsenal had 1.29 xG

It's obviously only a statistic but shows we weren't miles away from arsenal

Traore lifting it over the bar one-on-one was the best chance of the game. The chance after 17s was very unlikely to score as he only just got the tip of his boot to it in time.

Was the standard Wolves first half. Just gave away the first goal away from a nothing ball accross the middle. Unfortunately unlike Burnley, Newcastle, Saints, Sheff Utd we didn’t manage to get the equaliser. We probably should have done but Jota didn’t put Raul in and then slip made his mind up and Adama really should have scored. Emi flying out meant anything on target was a goal, a normal side foot would have naturally elevated and as long as he missed his face was a goal. He’s obviously full of confidence trying the dink, but despite improvements in his end product I don’t think he as the finesse for that and was a much harder option than simply kicking it goal-wards.

Bizarrely we then moved Adama to RWB and we were awful (drinks break didn’t help), not sure he touched the ball in their half after that and we didn’t look like scoring.

This new disciplined Arsenal were similar to us. Men behind the ball, deep and in shape, difficult to break down. That completely nullified Adama in the 5-3-2 and should have been changed sooner. When it was changed we were knocking on the door, but as I said moving him back was a disaster. We showed them too much respect and 3-4-3 from the start (Or Jota up top) May have posed them a few more questions, but it really was a nothing game for both sides first half.

Got a bit too excited with the top 4. That’s nigh on impossible now, and a bad week here may put top 6 in jeopardy. I expect us to bounce back though and two wins would be lovely to all but guarantee a top 6 finish with Arsenals next 3.

I actually thought it was in as I watched it

It was noticeable when we went to 3-4-3 Arsenal immediately made subs themselves. Might have been coincidence, I suppose, but it suggests Arteta really did his homework (not that we're hugely difficult to scout, if anyone's been paying attention the last couple years)

He called Tierney being terrified of Adama. Not so much homework as his eyes were working. Only shock was he left him on after HT

we had six shots on target against West Ham and have only managed 5 on target in the whole of the other three games since the restart Bournemouth, Villa and Arsenal. The shots to target ratio is pretty awful bar West Ham.
1 out of 10 v Arsenal
2 out of 9 v Villa
2 out of 10 V Bournemouth
6 out of 10 v West Ham

4 goals in 39 attempts
