Don't want Hwang playing, he's shit. Play Neto instead of Podence if possible.

2021/22: W 3-2 (A)
2020/21: L 0-1 (H), D 0-0 (A)
2019/20: W 2-1 (H), W 1-0 (A), L 1-2 (A, LC)
2017/18: W 2-0 (H), L 1-4 (A)
2016/17: W 1-0 (H), D 1-1 (A)
2011/12: L 2-3 (H), D 0-0 (A)
2010/11: L 1-2 (H), W 1-0 (A)
2009/10: D 1-1 (H), D 2-2 (A)
2003/4: L 0-4 (H), L 2-3 (A)
1995/6: L 0-1 (A, LC)

They've only won one game all season against anyone currently in the top half (that being Leicester who are 10th).

When we beat them 2-0 in 2017:

-------------------Ruddy---------------

--------Miranda----Coady----Batth--

Doherty-----Saiss-----Neves------Douglas

----------Costa-----Jota----Cavaleiro--------

Loads more goal threat in that team than anything we can/will send out on Saturday...

I'm not sure enough of the quality of the young lads to throw them straight into a tough derby, I'd be starting Donk and Hwang myself.

Jonny.....Boly.....Coady.....Kilman....RAN

.......Trincao/Neto........Silva.......Podence.

Front 3 is a bomb scare if Neto isn't ready but we don't have much choice. Prefer Silva to get a few games over Hwang but only because we need to have a proper look at him.
Don't thing Semedo will be fit will he?

We keep saying Hwang isn't a wide forward, so why not give him a shot up front when the opportunity arises? I don't particularly want to experiment with Fabio when we're close to European football and need these points. If we were 14th, fine.

Yeah I was tempted with Hwang, he's not very good but at least he knows where the goal is.
I suspect it will be Hwang starting at 9 and Donk in midfield rather than Cundle but I'd go with my team.

Villa play 433 just like Palace do, play with a 2 and we'll be smacked and deserve it.

RAN in if Semedo isn't fit. Neto for Podence if he is.

Or just play with a 2 and boss the flanks with two very good footballers out of Semedo, Jonny and RAN

I think we will lose this. Don't think we can do without Raul and especially Neves.

We played 3 against Villa and were utter garbage.

We didn’t get belted by Brentford. They sat deep from the start, we gifted them 2 goals and they spent the whole time hoofing into Toney and we couldn’t deal with it. They didn’t play through the thirds at all

Palace away we were rubbish but Raul, Hwang and Trincao but in 0/10s. Palace home we were shite because the space was with the WBs and Hoever and Marcal are garbage, and Podence put in his occasional 0/10.

If anything given there’s no Neves, we will be better to bypass the midfield anyway. Pin their FBs back with the forwards and then the WBs should have the freedom of Molineux. If they send McGinn or Ramsey out their then Moutinho will have tons of space and if they have Coutinho and Buendia covering the FBs then the onus will be on thr CBs progessing the ball into the forwards.

We didn't play a 3 at Villa. Donck played that weird inside right thing Bruno has done badly a couple of times instead of Trincao. It was 3421 until the subs

Donck has played some form of hybrid role in there for pretty much the entirety of his time here. This game wasn’t really any different to that. He was dropping in alongside Neves and Moutinho but then being the one to do the running and get forward too.

It’s broadly irrelevant though and my point in the last paragraph still still stands.

Surprised to see people leaving Trincao out after he's finally done something.
I’d play him. Our success in this game is going to be more down to having forwards and WBs who are good on the ball and in tight pockets exploiting the spaces that a 433 leaves. Playing Hwang who has zero ability with his back to goal/ in possession is more of a problem than whether we have 2 or 3 CMs in the middle of the park. As the forwards should be making a 4 in their anyway.

Villa totally empty midfield under Gerrard too, it's really weird. The full backs play miles up the pitch and the CMs have to fill the gaps. They have no proper DM at all other than Nakamba who is shit and moreover injured.

Means you end up with ridiculous stuff like John McGinn's heat map looking like he's a really rubbish RB (well I suppose he is).

Their fans are far from convinced so far.

Hopefully they leave Ings and his stupid record against us on the bench.

Boly Coady Kilman

Semedo Moutinho Dendoncker Jonny

Podence

Trincao Silva

Could put Neto in the front line too if he is properly fit

Well there’s a reason they lose to anyone decent. Playing expansive attacking football tends to work against teams you are pound for pound better than. It does not against anyone who is decent and exploits the 1v1s.

Are we good enough to exploit the 1v1s? I don’t know. On paper yes, but it depends on what version of our inconsistent players turns up. 0/10 Podence/Trincao, unfit Neto?

I don’t see Silva as a massive issue. Raul hasn’t been great and his desire to run in behind should generate space. He also played pretty well against them last year. If we’re hoofing the ball in to him then our game plan has fallen down elsewhere.

Which set of fans will chant “Two nil and you fucked it up” first?

This, but Neto in for either Pod or Trincao if for.

Happy to play any 2 of Jonny, semedo and RAN

Assuming 3-5-2 I think it'll be:

Sa

Kilman - Coady - Saiss

Jonny - Cundle - Donk - Moutinho - RAN

Hwang - Podence
