Besiktas 0 Wolves 1 - At least Dick Turpin wore a mask verdict thread

Sorry but I think there are a few naive and/or entitled comments here. We just took three points from Istanbul FFS. With a clean sheet. And apparently Nuno got it all wrong and we should have thrown the kitchen sink at them from the off! Not a game for the neutral to enjoy and we certainly weren't firing up front, but keeping things tight at the back is how you do it in Europe, and we were as solid as stone where it counted. Needed to get ourselves back into this tournament after the Braga game and we've done just that.

Hear hear

Pretty much the perfect away European performance in many ways, although not an exciting watch.

Rather be a Wolves fan than a United fan. They were REALLY abysmal.

We played the occasion not the game. No way we planned to get an injury time winner

They were there for the taking and as soon as we started playing a bit more on the front foot we get a goal.

Great result for me but it could easily have gone the other way.

In isolation, I think that's fair.

In conjunction with a number of below par, passive performances I think some concerns are valid. I don't think you can attribute a last kick of the game winner as a tactical masterclass.

I agree with this! Away at Besiktas in Europe when 2 seasons ago we were away at Burton ffs.

There were very few moments in which I felt Besiktas were going to score, whereas we put the ball in the net twice (one incorrectly ruled out).

It wasn't an exciting game, anyone which we weren't perfect BUT Besiktas hardly had a shot on target and we're now unbeaten in 4. We've not quite hit our stride yet and improvement is needed but let's not pretend that wasn't a good defensive performance with a deserved winner.

Or, to put it another way, we made sure we stayed in the game and then punished them.

Pretty much the Nuno game plan since July 2017. It just looks a bit prettier when we're playing Championship also-rans.

It looked prettier 6 months ago against some of the best teams in the country.

A good result doesn't cover a poor performance.

Clean sheet . tick
Win. Tick
Defensively sound. Tick
Great performance? No, but Nuno is not stupid ,even if the result vindicates the tactics somewhat.

You can keep Vida BTW.

Well said.

This wasn't an awful performance at all. Offensively we were seriously lacking obviously but across the back 5 (plus Rui) we were quality. A point would've been a fair result but I'm delighted with the win.

We did what we had to do defensively and got a great away result in a tough European venue. Their team was shit though. A draw was the minimum based on how poor going forward and vulnerable at the back they were.

All that still doesn't paper over how poor we were in possession until the right personnel were on the pitch and we actually started to string together attacks consistently in the last 10 mins.

Traore the player to pick the team up, seemed as though as soon as he came on morale went up

Loving everyone slating Besiktas as if they're Burton/Bolton levels of awful and we should've pasted them 4-0.

No one is denying that we defended well, but offensively that was pretty poor stuff. Raul had no service and frankly looks tired, there was little creativity and we really struggled to keep the ball let alone do anything useful with it unt the last few minutes. Regardless of a good result and where we were a few years ago that was a pretty poor performance, keeping in mind that the home team is apparently pretty rancid these days. We could easily have lost rhis one. I feel for any neutral viewers today.

Cant believe people are complaining about the performance.
Ok it was not as fluid as it could have been however.

It was tye perfect away performance in Europe.
There is no doubt that we are lacking confidence dont undereatimate what a boost that will give us.

We won away. Something Manchester United haven’t done since February.

In fact Bury have won away more recently than United and they no longer exist.

I don't feel sorry for any neutral viewers whatsoever!

You say little creativity but we scored twice, had a great shot from Saiss, a decent effort from Raul (the header, he should have scored) and Cutrone flashed past the post.

Besiktas had 1 Vida header...

So let's go hell for leather from the start (Besiktas are out of form but they have some useful players), whoops, we're 2-0 down and we're close to being out of the tournament. We were always going to keep it tight early on, at the expense of attacking play - didn't help that Neto and MGW had no impact at all. Had we won vs Braga then maybe we'd have approached it differently. But we didn't.

We've played 16 games this season now and lost three (admittedly this is very likely to be four on Sunday). I wish people would stop going on as if we've had an absolute Bruce of a start because we really haven't. Can we play better, of course we can (would be helpful if our best player were fit) but we're doing ok with plenty of room for improvement. You don't just rock up and beat teams, at home or in Europe.

How many teams go to Turkey and win with a clean sheet, not many. Lighten up a bit.

I wish people would stop inferring that even the mildest criticism is some kind of unreasonable act of fan treason.
