Question. Why was it impossible to make the changes to the ICGS system apply retrospectively to Rob Roberts (so he couldn’t be recalled). But it would be fine to change the standards system to retrospectively apply to Owen Paterson?
 
It look like that the speaker will select the Loathsome amendment on the Patterson case.

He should have thrown it out. They have a huge majority and could have changed the rules if they thought that they were not fit for purpose. It stinks of changing a decision that some of them * (some only on the basis that his wife took her life - terrible that that is) don't like the result.
 
I'll shut up on this subject after this!

Johnson has backed the Loathsome amendment as he wants an appeals process built into the system. Its strange he didn't have a problem with the standards Committee when it overturned the decision of the independent commissioner that Boris Johnson broke the code of conduct for MPs in relation to his holiday in Mustique.
 
Will we ever be able to repair the damage these cunts are causing to the country? I will rejoice when the day finally comes that they are voted out of office. Sleazy, lying, cheating scum bags.

I know Iraq still hasn't after the other lot were in office, so I doubt it very much
 
Didn't realise until the debate that the current rules (now former rules) were bought into the house by the then leader of the House of Commons......

Andrea Leadsom.

So the outrage at the system supposedly not being for purpose has been amended by the person who was responsible for implementing them in the first place. She claimed to be offended by the independence of any review of the standards committee (7 members, 7 lay members) by devising a system whereby 7 members , 4 of whom are government MP's including a chair appointed directly by the government, as a fair way of conducting an appeal.

I struggle to see how the new appeal committee will be filled so the suspension of Mr Patterson, who I believe nobody is really arguing that he didn't break the rules, will be kicked into the long grass.

You see my post on VAR last night and in the past is what's called expressing an opinion Paul. You and anyone else are free to agree, disagree, comment, critique, applaud or pillory and that's all fine. I'm sure if you ever choose to express one yourself others will do the same with you.
 
I’m a fairly common poster on another (non-Wolves) forum - in general it’s pretty right wing, much more so than this place. Usually I avoid their politics threads as I get annoyed - just had a dip into their equivalent of this thread (usually pretty pro Johnson), and they are massively down on him. Perhaps, finally, the corruption is cutting through and people are starting to realise what’s going on?

The plot thickens... does this mean that Patterson will have been let off the hook?

From the Guardian...

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of the Commons, has just told MPs that yesterday’s vote mistakenly confused an individual case with the general argument about the need for reform. And he also said reforms to the disciplinary process for MPs needed to proceed on a cross-party basis.

He said the new committee being set up will not consider whether the Owen Paterson case needs to be reviewed.

He said the government will be bringing forward more detailed plans in future.

It is not clear yet what this means for Paterson.

On Sky News Sam Coates says he has been briefed that the government is now planning to get MPs to vote on a new motion on Owen Paterson, proposing that he should be suspended for 30 days (as the standards committee recommended). This time it would be expected to pass.

According to the Telegraph’s Tony Diver, Paterson may have miscalculated with a hubristic media round yesterday. This seems to be a factor in No 10 deciding to cut him loose.

Who would have thought that Paterson, a bloke who has took £0.5m from companies for lobbying would be stupid enough to do a media round asking for resignations etc, from people who independently found that HE had broken the rules. They are now going to throw him under one of Boris's buses.
 
Not surprised after this mornings daily heil front page. This makes Boris look bad so he will u turn to try and diminish that.

Boris Johnson has admitted receiving a free holiday at a luxurious Spanish villa linked to Zac Goldsmith, the former MP who was given a peerage and job by the prime minister.

The latest update to the register of ministerial interests revealed that Johnson’s near week-long stay in the Marbella property in October was funded by the Goldsmith family.

The property is marketed online for rentals, reportedly for as much as £25,000 a week
 
They have definitely fucked up here. The plan was clearly to have the reform vote and then reprieve Paterson as a distracting by-product. He then shouts his mouth on the press round and it all goes to shit.

However the cunning plan in this circumstance was to throw Paterson to the wolves but leave the reform in place to protect future potential cases. Predominantly for the benefit of the fat corrupt cunt in number ten.

As soon as Labour and the SNP said they wanted no part in the new committee the plan was doomed to fail. Good.

I've a feeling that you may be right as an investigation by the Standards Commissioner on wallpapergate may yet take place after other processes on the matter have been completed.

Does anyone think that this motion was also a favour to the some of the loons on the right of the party that effectively got him into No 10? One of their mob is in the deep doodoo so its favour call in time? As you say the mouthing off to the press, the constituency and press backlashes too meant that the U Turn was inevitable?
