Coronavirus

More deaths yesterday than on the titanic. And then we go higher again. The figures are just hideous. Today we added two Aberfans to the Titanic. And things are going to get worse for a while yet. It’s just so awful.
The silver lining on is the postive cases heading downwards and the vacination numbers climbing

So many deaths in hospital now will be counting towards that number, if you're in a week or 2 you've a massive chance of getting covid, just no one will actually say that. Seeing loads that are negative - negative - negative - oh, positive, well I wonder how they got that. . . And the doctors never put "hospital acquired" so it can't be coded this way, all just lumped in together

The devastating thing is how desensitised the population and the press are to these numbers now. They're almost water off a duck's back to most people now unfortunately. The fact that "excess deaths" aren't talked about as much now has, I think, just led to a collective shrug of "meh, they were probably all 90 and going to die anyway, I want to go to the pub".

Yet no front page of the National newspapers give it a mention.

Edit - hadn't read Del's post.

It's related to the point Clive Myrie was making, in that the human aspects of too many stories of covid aren't getting out there.

Bizarrely, 2 weeks ago in a meeting I said that the next big issue is how we deal with PTSD acquired by all those who are relentlessly working in response to the pandemic. I was half joking, but it has become a bit of a thing.

Glastonbury unsurprisingly cancelled. Thats usually the last weekend in June.

The fall out when its finally under control is going to be just as bad, if not worse, than the virus itself. So many people missing treatment that might be minor now but could become major, some not going to their GP's that could mean serious illness is not detected, mental health collapsing etc

When I was diagnosed with depression my mum had been diagnosed with cancer, I lost my job and an engagement ended all inside about 8 weeks. I didnt start struggling until id found new work and my mum had finished treatment. It hit me when I let my guard down. I think once normal starts getting closer health workers are going to be faced with a tidal wave of PTSD and other associated conditions from the horrors they've seen during the pandemic. I think its then the government will make moves on the health service when there are even more acute staff shortages than now because the demand won't slow. All those with pre existing conditions or cancelled appointments/operations will be requiring care.

Just been having this very conversation with my mate

1401 deaths today and there's reports that the new variant could lead to 30% more deaths.

Realistically Leeds and Reading could be the first major gatherings at the end of August but even then I think I'm being overly optimistic
mostly jazz are emailing me offering the opportunity to set up an installment plan for this summers festival.
I admire their optimism at least!

we seem to be in for a couple of weeks at 1500 as a daily average, before it starts coming down in february.
god I hope it starts falling earlier than that mind.
