Cost of Living

My rent went up 33% year-on-year.

Shit is bananas everywhere at the moment.

No. The cheapest price will be the capped variable rate which the majority of consumers will be on now, or soon will be. Energy companies are losing money by having the cap imposed on them, so they won't be offering anything any cheaper.
That's kind of what I figured without fully looking into it. Ah well. Hold tight and cancel the kids swimming lessons....

The email I had said a std variable option would be much cheaper than any fixed price, but when I tried to renew, the variable price quoted was the same as their cheapest option fixed. Saw a piece by Martin Lewis yesterday saying a fixed option would not be worth looking at as they're much more expensive....apart from Eon/Eon next. Luckily we are with Eon next so will probably go with their 12 months fixed, which will at least save us a bit from October's next cap hike for a few months.
It's an eye watering rise though. Currently we pay £65/month going up to £115/month gas and electric.

On the same subject, I've always been sceptical but are smart meters actually worth getting from a cost saving perspective?

They do make you more aware of what you're spending.

My annual bill is going up from c£1500 to £2500. It's fucking ridiculous

Absolutely - its a bit trite, but you can't reduce what you spend without knowing how you spend it.

Their use is mainly at the start in helping yoi get your baseline usage down, once that's done then it s more about 'how fuckign muych does the tumble dryer cost!!' sort of thing.

mrs jelly has remained adamant for now that she won't move to a smart meter.
We do monitor our energy use as best we can.

My fixed rate energy bill finished yesterday. I was not going to go for the fixed rate deal they were offering which was between £400 and £450 per month (over double my current payment). Out of interest, I looked at the fixed rate deal they were offering me today and it is £800 per month. Even on their variable contract they want me to pay £387 per month. That's an increase from about £2300 per year to £4600.

If I go for the fixed rate I've been offered, I will have to have a smart meter fitted, I don't mind really but I want to be able to check it myself too (I'm a distrustful bastard).
Doubt it will make much difference to our usage, we're already the lowest users I know.
Just applied to have water meter fitted which should save us about half what we're currently paying, just the Internet to get sorted and we should be OK, wife got rid of her car yesterday, we don't really need 2. After that I'll have to start selling body parts.

Other than the ability to read the meter more frequently automatically there is zero difference between a dumb and 'smart' meter. They are not really that smart..

I've been fortunate that I've had our energy prices fixed on pretty low rates for the past couple of years. First with Yorkshire Energy and then with E.On. I was only paying £55 a month up until last month but that will now go up to £127.15 a month as we have to go onto the new price cap :(

E.On Next were offering me a 1 Year fix at the new prices and I was unsure whether to take it until I saw Martin Lewis tweet that it was the best deal currently on offer. I signed up to it yesterday before they withdrew the limited offer from the market (which I think they now have done). At least I guess I won't be affected by any October increase.

As for smart meters, we had one installed by E.On a few years ago but the monitor was more of a pain than anything as it made me want to go around switching things off! We have since lost the monitor and apparently E.On don't offer them anymore so my smart meter is effectively useless apart from I don't have the hassle of manually submitting a reading every month.

Hope Eon next haven't stopped the 'cheap' fixed rate tariff, haven't got round to signing up for it...off to check

However, it looks like I'm about to save around £250 on my car insurance this year, which should offset things for a few months

I'm at the stage now that I can't fully fill up at the supermarket without going into the kiosk as the pumps cut off at £100 on self service card payments

😲 What are you guys driving?

Don't think I've breached the £80 barrier filling up so far and I always run it down as close to empty as I dare. Can't wait to ditch this pissing hire car and get back to some sweet sweet hybrid driving, hopefully they've got some chargers installed at the office just in time for me to maximise my electric running too.
