Dave Edwards

Henry isn't lazy at all. He was rightly taken off against Blackburn, as he had a poor game but he is a decent player for this level.

Agree that goals scored is the issue. Goal diff is clouded by the fact we shipped half the goals conceded in 5 games, but we are well below the goals scored from all the teams above (& by 5 teams below us have scored more). Hopefully this is being addressed in this window
 
Yeah, our goal difference wasn't that impressive in the first place. Scoring goals has been an issue, we rely heavily on Sako (who after a glut of goals hasn't scored since October) and without Dicko we have been rubbish.

We are certainly trying to address it with the signing of Afobe. We definitely need another attacking player who can provide competition across the front four positions in our current set up. Lingard seems to fit the bill.
 
I think with the way we play we aren't likely to win by more than 2 goals very often so our goals for and goal difference are never going to be fantastic.
 
The key is being solid at the back and defending well as a team. It's how we started the season, indeed it's how we finished last season (conceded what, eight goals at home after Christmas or something, four in one game). Now we have fixed the selection errors of having substandard full backs and Price has come in to do his thing (I like Evans but he has plenty to learn defensively) we don't often look like conceding.

All top teams keep clean sheets. It's why Rodgers' football is clearly unsustainable unless you have two strikers in career best form at the same time. That is hard to find, setting a team up properly less so, even if you do sacrifice some flair along the way. So what. Give me wins every day.
 
I'd like Messi and Mascherano, but we can't afford them and they won't come anyway, so until we find the right guy at the right price, who will actually come to Wolves, I think we are being a tad harsh on deadly Dave, compared with Clarke he's Sanchez.
 
As I wrote an another thread a midfield 2 of McDonald and Price is not going to be conducive to a high scoring team. They will be solid, keep the ball in the main but aren't going to break teams open too often. Add Edwards to the equation against a team only interested in defending and you get what you saw on Saturday. To get into the Top 6 one of the three needs replacing in my view. The flip is we won't concede too many.
 
Deutsch is right, I know people want to see us score 4 and 5 goals a game, but it's more important to keep cleansheets.
 
Absolutely love a solid defence and a string of clean sheets. Give me a collection of 1-0 or 2-0 victories and I'm happy as a pig in muck.

McDonald and Price are excellent at what they do, as good as anything in this division but if we wish to play through the thirds we have to link through the centre circle into the wide players and striker.
Without having variety when moving upfield we find ourselves totally predictable as against Blackpool at the weekend.
Wolves could easily miss the play offs due to a lack of imaginative quality in this key area of the pitch.
Its not about one players performance its about developing a variable attacking performance, games are won by good use of combination play.

Well that's true to a point, but we're one point off the team above us and should we be level on points at some stage, our goal diff is looking pretty sick!
Without going into it and checking I think we're about 19 goals below that team.
In fact it's pretty amazing to be 8th and have a goal difference of -2!

15 we are, but if you think that we had -13 in three games then it's a bit of a red herring. There's only Blackburn below us with a better goal difference.

Oh, and I think sick means good nowadays. :)

Regarding my earlier post in the thread, I agree a solid defence is important, of course it is, but I seriously doubt that Villa fans are jumping for joy that only the top four in the Premier League have conceded less than them and that they have a better defensive record than all teams up to the top eight. Not conceding is great, and while I don't expect us to score 4 or 5 every game (which is completely unrealistic) it is a concern that out top scorer hasn't scored since October and our main striker only has six goals, albeit with a decent lay off through injury.

Yes we're looking much better lately and I'm very optimistic about how our season will end up, and I'll take 1-0 wins from now until the end of the season, but when we're a fair way behind all of the teams above us in the Goals Scored column (Boro being the closest to us with nine goals more) I'd say that's a more valid concern than Edwards' place in the side at the moment. Maybe he's the reason for our 'lack' of goals?
 
Averaging 0.5 goals a game as Villa are is unacceptable, no-one would ever suggest that we copy Paul "the entertainment vacuum" Lambert. There is a world of difference between that state of affairs and setting up to be as solid as possible.

To turn it around, I'm sure Liverpool fans would rather have scored 20 fewer and conceded 20 fewer last season. They'd have won the league.

I'm not disagreeing with you, and like I said I'm happy we're now performing a world apart from what we were in November. I've acknowledged that our goals against column is banged out of whack due to a four or five game spat of defensive shitness, but I'm not concerned about the defence as Ken has sorted that out. But do you think our scoring record this season is good enough?
