Wolves 2-2 Spurs: EFL Cup 3rd Rd - Bah Lost on Penalties Verdict Thread

Damn right i am, when a ball is manoeuvred into a position where it is 1 to 5 foot away from the goal on the floor or at head height i fully expect a player to be there! Especially when we have 6 forwards on the pitch, it's quite astonishing that you suggest otherwise?

Where else should they be!??

I'll put this simply; the crosser is in control of what he does with the ball

Blaming others for not being where you've crossed is bloody stupid.

You're never going to score from nobody on the end of a cross, even an opposition player.

You can argue the tactics are wrong from the manager and they could well be, the biggest one being crossing to players who aren't good in the air.

And you're never going to score if you aimlessly fire the ball into areas where defenders or goalkeepers are so they can clear or catch (like dozens of Moutinho's corners that hit the first man), the idea with a cross is to put into an area that is difficult to defend and has the potential to be attacked by an attacking player. Those two specific crosses did exactly that, in both instances none of our forwards had the attacking intelligence to be in the right areas. It was something that Jota regularly did, where he would pop up at the back post.

Honestly mate, the one with Trincao and Podence was incredible, it was so obvious where the ball was going and what they needed to do, but they effectively "hid".

The biggest waster of crosses isn't even Adama, it's Marcal
Brentford actively allowed him to cross the ball, especially in the second half "go on mate, you'll either fuck it up, or we'll just heeeeed it away with one of our enormous CBs"

When you do key passes (passes which led to a shot on goal) divided by xA all of our attacking players are at a very similar level (0.07 - 0.08) with João being slightly higher.

This suggests to me that the chances Adama creates, when he gets it right, are no worse than any other of our forward players.

One other thing doing this shows is that our wingbacks create nothing in terms of quantity

Edit. This is the PL so excludes cup games

You're still blaming everybody but the crosser, just with different words.

He should look up and see there is nobody there or likely to be there.

The players don't just rock up to play games, they will train for crosses and set pieces (which are very different). There has been a pattern of play where players have got to the byline and cut the ball back on the floor but that isn't Adama's game. But the players are still making those runs for the cut back but the ball is now going somewhere else from the boot of Adama.

Hwang went for a mazy dribble and cut the ball back from the same position against Brentford but also failed to find a team mate.

That's probably on the manager rather than the players and maybe a variation needs finding. Slide across the box and different runs, which we did see when Hwang went up front and Pod on the left against Spurs.

Whatever the answer, wanging crosses into players whose strength isn't heading isn't it.

Crossing to players that aren't there is not a chance and is just a fucking terrible decision by the crosser.

It means he hasn't assessed the situation and has blindly made a decision. That rarely ends well.
It's a fair point. We have Raul who can (could) head a ball. Donk maybe. Against Brentford particularly why the fuck would anyone put a cross in to head it up against 3 x 6' 5" defenders. When we play Brighton it's the same scenario.
Adama would be so much better if he made a decision based on assessing the situation before he wailed it in. Something it seems he is unable to do. He's not on his own either.
Mix it up for fuck sake.

Well in the particularly 2 instances i'm talking about, he did lift it over their monstrous CBs and their keeper, but as i keep re iterating we didn't have the players there to capitalise. With the Trincao and Podence one, they were there when he looked, and then weren't there when the cross arrived.

It's akin to laying the ball in front of someone to run onto, but them changing their mind and not bothering to run as the pass is played, but blaming the passer.

The fact he is "over hitting" his crosses is to evade their big ass defenders, surely.

I didn't see that one to be fair. I wouldn't be hitting crosses in the air at all with those types of defenders. Cut backs or low powerful ones across the face of goal would be the way to go against that type. Imo anyway.

Anyone on this forum who ever gives me any grief for going off topic can get in the sea. The state of this thread! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I agree, but when you look up and see the 1 or 2 players (!!) we have in the box marked (such as when Hwang tried a pull back) what is the next best option? Playing it over them into an area where a player is likely to be/should be.

Overall though i think we all agree, and it's been mentioned, this method of attack isn't going to work for us, lofted crosses into the box for Raul, or to players who seem to have an inability to sniff out a chance (like WJ too last season) is a waste of time.

So get Adama back on the inside left.

For that though you would need the team to be switched on with each other, and by the looks of it they are not even close in the front third. Maybe it will come in time, but we don't have much of that, or should i say Bruno won't.

Well that's exactly my point, the lack of intelligent forward positional thinking is crap.

We saw it last season with WJ where he'd refuse to attack the front post, or the far post, or just attack, and yeah he was a lazy shit, but surely our coaches identify this and tell them what for??

Exactly this, putting crosses in is completely ineffective for this team, so continuing to do it is crazy.
Tbf to Bruno I think the first four games it generally wasn’t the approach. I enjoyed how we largely tried to play through teams and if crossing it was by getting the wing backs arriving on the overlap.

I haven’t seen the last two games but it sounds like a step back in that sense

Just an addition, if you buy a player for 35 million pounds you would expect him to make an immediate impact right? Not after 2-4 years..

Best Goal and Assist over 90 minutes ratio at the club last season.

That seems like an impact to me 👍
