Evolution or revolution?

Can't speak for anyone else, but when I say 'upgrade' I really mean someone who's going to come in and take their position in the starting line-up by the scruff of the neck. We haven't had that since the first wave of PL talent we signed, and I think someone of that ilk would make a big difference.

I'd love one of the young lads to do this by the end of the season, more likely you'd expect Semedo to bring something else to the table than Doc did on that flank. I'll be happy if Marcal is a Jonny place-mat, anything more is a bonus.

Factoring in the sale of proven PL assets, the talk of 'new cycles' by Nuno, and the 'future superstar' nature of most of our signings, I'm expecting this to perhaps be an occasionally painful season of transition rather than an instant build on 7th place?

Having achieved 7th place in the last 2 seasons we are now coming to the harder part to break into the upper reaches of the PL

A number of teams have managed to do the first part (for at least 1 season) but its rare to be able to do the latter.

This will take some level of evolution rather than revolution & may involve a backward step to get there

Watching Atalanta the other night I wonder if it's the direction we might be going in. It would be a bit stressful to watch as they're so gung-ho (and I kind of doubt Nuno would go full Gasperini) but as noted previously with the wide forwards tucking in to pull the defence narrow and giving the WBs space to work outside. 2 of their goals came from the WBs assisting each other!

Nobody better to watch - bloody brilliant.

Could always get rid of Nuno and get Keegan back from Spain :)

We've had a couple of goals like that haven't we? With Doc assisting Jonny? Southampton at home in the first Prem season, and a goal for Jonny post lockdown from an assist from Doc i think, Palace was it?

I'd wondered about comparisons with Atalanta before and watching Ait Nouri tonight you can maybe see what Nuno is after, with him & Semedo as wing backs. You'd think that the CBs would be the next to be upgraded, and maybe Nuno and Jeff accept that there is going to be a season of a lower league finish while we adjust the style of the team. Maybe we will need to be patient, but you couldn't help but be impressed by RAN tonight

This is what I think, although with less competitions and games we could still make a fight of it. Depends on how many of the signings gel quickly I guess.

On your second point, RAN seems to have impressed everyone who saw him on here tonight, could be a little coup if it comes off

It's not often a defender in a team that loses 6-1 is the stand out for a good reason.

Gasperini plays a Bielsa style ultra high press and Nuno just doesn't play that way.

Be some style change if we did. I can see us pressing better as a unit and higher but not like Atalanta or Leeds.
