Football Manager

Just started playing CM01/02 updated to the 2019 squads. It may be about 20 years since I last played it but it still seems pretty familiar!

I can't remember what tactics I used to use though and, as it is updated to 2019, I don't know who the amazing bargains are to search for. I remember that someone else on here was playing it (Bear?) - any hints or tips?

I can remove and install again as the original CM01/02 so may also try that at some point and sign all the legendary old players.

We'll I'm enjoying it so far.

I should probably add that I haven't played a full FM game since FM2008 (I think), I have only been playing the FM Mobile games for the last few years. I probably wouldn't know what to do with FM2020 if I had it to be honest.

It's a game ripe for abuse, where the match/tactics engine is so flawed that you can end up cheating by accident, where cheat players guarantee you the league every year and the transfer system is actually harder to play properly than exploit.

Back in 2001 then yes indeed, it was the pinnacle of management games. I will never understand why people play it now. It's horribly, horribly flawed. It'd be like us playing Nathan Blake up front against Olympiacos.

I like the simplicity of it. Yes it has its flaws and it can be easy at times, but it's still more fun to play than the newer ones.

T-Dan. No real tips. Other than the DM and AM positions/tactics are fairly strong in that game. I usually play 4-1-3-1-1.

4 at the back, 1 up front, use a DMC. It's not about the strongest attributes, but about the difference between the strongest and the weakest. Pick players with 2-3 strong attributes where you need them, whilst everything else is low. Attacking football, hard tackling. Can't remember much else, it's been a while.

You can download tactic easily, but as DW said, once you start doing that, the game is far too easy. The best tactics were by a user called iodine.

It looks like it will be a short stint for me on the updated CM01/02 as my wife has treated me to FM2020.

As I haven't played the full version of the game since FM2008, I guess I'm going to be pretty lost for a while!

I can't get into the newer versions of the game. Way too involved and so much going on. I like the tactical side of it and the ways of setting teams up, but everything else takes away the enjoyment for me.

It might seem a bit overwhelming to start with but you can delegate pretty much anything and everything to your staff so you can gradually add more for yourself to do as you understand it.

I’m still very much ‘in it’ at the moment, currently in my third season at Swansea having started at Tonbridge and a brief stint at Grimsby.

One of the reasons I was reluctant to get it was I was worried about how involved I'd need to be. I haven't got the time to commit hours and hours to it like I used to.

I like to just find a tactic that can be universally successful with whichever team I pick, delegate all the boring stuff like training to my staff and just get on with signing players.

I'll give it a go though and see if I can get the hang of it.

That's not going to happen unfortunately. It needs tweaking and tinkering on a match by match basis, otherwise you'll get beat.

Plus as in real life, you find the system to fit your players. I'd love to be playing a replica of Nuno's football with Kidderminster but it ain't happening.

Your assistant will chime in all the time and tell you what he'd advise on a match-by-match basis, though of course if he's an absolute chump, you don't listen to him.

Other than occasionally manually giving players a rest if they're knackered or making some clown who has displeased me do endless laps and nothing else for a week, I leave all the training to my staff, that's what they're there for.

I don’t find I need to change much once I work out a tactic that works for my current team, just make it a bit more defensive for the tougher games etc.

I pretty much always have three set up and they're all worked on in training so familiarity is high. Then it's just the click of a button to switch between them and that covers pretty much all the bases.

Yeah, I know the newer versions need a proper tactical approach unlike the old games. Unfortunately, I generally can't be arsed tinkering with tactics all the time as I never understand them enough.

I don't think I'm going to last very long with it :icon_lol:

One of the keys is not being boring and just picking Wolves (I never pick them any more as real life thoughts pollute the game too much, I mean he was waaaaaaaank but Seyi probably was worth more than £50k when I sold him). Did make me laugh when we were in L1 and loads of people on here were crowing that they got promoted :icon_lol: Good work lads, well done.

Sunderland would be a good shout to start off and familiarise yourself, massive rep relative to the league they're in, some good players for that level, finances should be ok, gate money will dwarf anyone else in the division, players will carry on signing for you wherever you get promoted to, easier to attract loanees from big clubs as you have good facilities, etc etc.

Alternatively you get a free copy of Touch when you activate the game through Steam, or at least you should anyway. I'm led to believe that simplifies quite a lot of it though personally I've never tried.

That approach never stopped dean Saunders in real life,so you should be ok in a game
