Football is no different to history and myths tend to become believed as the gospel.
Examples being:
Scotland fans England were very lucky to win the 1966 World Cup because Hurst 2nd goal never crossed the line.
Firstly that’ll be always open to conjecture, secondly people conveniently ignore the free kick West Germany were given that lead to the equaliser. Even by today’s standards it would be considered a very soft decision.
From fans of other clubs, I remember going to Molineux in the 80’s when only 1 stand was open.
Ok which game was this? From May 85- August 92 we dropped to 2 open stands.
Man Utd would have won the league in 58 if it hadn’t been for the Munich disaster. No they wouldn’t wolves were 4 points clear at the time when it was 2 points for a win and proceeded to go on an excellent run regardless of how good Man Utd were they wouldn’t have been caught.
Arsenal have never been relegated, yes they have in 1912/13 season.
The over inflated size of London clubs, West Ham and Spurs in particular. Two clubs that have decent cup records but only 2 league titles between them and both of them belong to Spurs.
Wimbledon beating Liverpool in the 88 cup final was a huge shock. Yes that Liverpool side were excellent but Wimbledon came 7th that year. It was a shock but nothing in comparison to Sunderland beating Leeds in 73.
Italia 90 was a great World Cup, no it was crap teams reliant on set pieces and penalties to win matches in the knockout rounds. Only really West Germany who played some decent stuff.
Also Euro 96 was a great spectacle, goal average per game was less than 2 and the knockouts were dreadful. In particular France v Netherlands at anfield.
Roberto Baggio’s penalty miss cost Italy the World Cup in 94. Actually they were already down in the shootout and even if he’d scored they’d probably have still lost.
Soccer is an annoying word invented by Americans to term football. Not it’s not it originates from England.
Bryan Robsons goal after 24 seconds in Spain 82 was the fastest ever World Cup goal at the time. No Valev Masek and Ernst Lehner scored quicker goals at earlier tournaments.
