January 2022 Transfer Thread

Bruno has basically got Stockholm Syndrome at this point. He's been fucked over from wanting '3-4 top players and we can do something special' to 'we can have a negative net spend and finish 8th with Toti, Jordao and Chiqinho in the squad, and that's special too'
It's almost like there is never any disparity between what an employee wants and what they are given in any other industry ever

You'd hope if the right target is available and the Adama money helps push it over the line then we'd go for it this month, with Europe still a realistic aim?
I think this is what we're all hoping....mind you whether Adama stays or is sold and we spend the money on a decent cm, I think Europe is out of our reach this season. Seen some comments on another forum that if we were to keep Adama we can push for top 4! Football fans are barmy

Just read Bruno's comments about not signing someone for 3 or 4 months but to be a permanent upgrade, which I think we can all get on board with. The issue I have is we hear it twice a year, so although it continues to make sense in isolation at some point those players need to come.
The problem with that is if we are waiting for right centre midfielder in the summer, we may well end up needing three.

Blame Mr. Podence for that!

I love when people think making an equivalence between football managers and normal jobs is clever
The only difference between a company and a football club is a company does not have 30,000 commercial managers !

And he'd be right.

If we're after three then I'd expect we'd have ample funds to do it. Neves isn't going cheap.

I was in the "9th-14th mid-table finish is inevitable" camp for a while but I think our chances of edging over the line into 7th have increased as the season has gone on, and are now large enough to feel somewhat plausible. Spurs and Arsenal have both revived recently, but both also still have unbalanced squads with a lot of inconsistent players; Man U look as wobbly as ever; and there isn't really much that I've seen to distinguish the natural sort of also-ran pack outside the top 6 of us, West Ham, and Leicester (especially with Everton already writing this season off).

I don't think it makes sense as a club strategy to spend spend spend if it's a gamble that requires the extra revenue of European qualification (especially because the Conference isn't exactly lucrative), but right now I could see anyone down to Southampton or Villa closing that gap, it's that inconsistent a season for so many clubs.

It feels like we are on the cusp of something great and have ourselves in a great position at the half way stage despite not really playing that well for large chunks of the season. But it now seems like the team is really showing signs of kicking on under Bruno, so if we make a couple of signings to help the continuation of this decelopment then a top 6 finish is definitely possible.

A forward with more output than any of the ones we have is clearly the easiest way to improve the first team and CM is probably the hardest. But the drop off in replacements at CM is the starkest out of any position. Ideally we sign both but with Neto returning then CM still has to be the most important. Particularly with the long term future of the two of them unlikely to be at Wolves for the obvious reasons.

I think the Top 6 will be the usual suspects, but a battle with Leicester and West Ham for 7th is feasible. One CM injury ends that though imo

I agree with Lage's analysis of the squad but I think Del definitely has a point on him toning down the language re transfers. He was an unknown on arrival so has to take their shit but if we carry on as we have his stock will be higher in the summer and the balance of power will shift.

Sadly you’re right. Proving why the big six winning everything is not good for the game

I'm not convinced by United and Spurs are going to have a nasty fixture pile up.

Spurs are five points ahead of us with a game in hand. We could catch them but I'd say it's fairly unlikely.

I don't think we will catch Spurs. We need to concentrate on beating Brentford. One or both of United and West Ham are dropping points today.
