January 2022 Transfer Thread

He scored 13 in his last season for Southampton and was signed by a very free spending team, not restricted by PL FFP who beat Utd to his signature. The comparison is quite frankly ridiculous

I'm not comparing the two :D

Just it was brought up earlier that he had a poor record (statistically) in his late teens/early 20s, which is true.

What TT says. He had done something. Fabio had done nothing, absolutely nothing.

I have no idea how we are having this debate again. Wolfman still somehow trying to justify it!😉

I'd be really interested to know what lage's pathway for him is

I would throw obscene amounts of money at Leicester to get Harvey Barnes.

It'll never happen. Just thinking out loud.

I'm not trying to justify it, if you read my post I'm doing the opposite!

I was just saying that IF he does come good, by that time it'll be years after we signed him, so basically what was the point of signing him when we did.

He doesn't seem to have one and I don't really blame him. He's further away from minutes on the pitch than he was pre Raul's injury last season

I'd say they'd done similar, stats wise, fair enough Shearer scored a hatrick - but that was it goals wise in his first 2 years. Silva scored 4 goals in his first year alone, so even if Silva doesn't score this season he's outperforming Shearer statistically so far 🤣. Generational talent!!

I really like him as a player but he looked like he'd regressed badly earlier this year. Seems to have been a temporary dip though.

YTS graduate versus £36m signing. I'm sure I don't need to point out the difference

I joked at the time he was going to be a Connor Wickham type, nothing I have seen has changed my view yet, I was surprised to see he has made 7 sub appearances this year as it feels a lot less, however happy to not see him if he is developing or progressing.

I get it's not an apples for apples comp, but yesterday we saw LFC 5th/6th choice attacker score a winner for them, they keep him partly as they can and partly because he offers something so totally different to their other frontline players, however meanwhile we have a guy who cost the money Silva did and who looks way off the plans of being an actual contributing squad member for a very small squad, in the long run I get the strategy, but not for a club seeming to operate the way we do or want to.

If we were ever going to sign him, we were forced into doing it when we did by Brexit.

We couldn't sign him now, he wouldn't have enough points; and if he does start to hit the heights where he did have enough points to sign him we wouldn't be able to afford him. If we were going to buy him (and I appreciate the jury is out on that), it had to be then.

One thing is for sure is if he ever does reach Shearer's levels, TWF circa 2020 - 2021 will make for some hilarious reading.

I get that - it just seems pointless to break your transfer record on a player that plays in a position that history says won't really come good until 21-22 when they are 18.

Somewhere in the annals of the Internet, I'm on record as calling Havard Flo and Oleg Luzhny good signings.

We've all been young and naive.

I did read your post. But the tone of “he might come good” “we’ve got to wait 3-4 years to find out” and stuff like that suggests the club had some kind of plan. There was no plan, it was a bung.

We signed Fabio before last season. Blackburn didn’t sign him after the first season. They signed him 3 years later after a good season. But yes, I know you were joking.

I don’t think it does. On the evidence before his signing it’s a poorly calculated gamble/bung, made worse as the club has FFP issues and a small squad.

Him “coming good” would be more luck than judgment on the fee, evidence pre signing and resulting impact on the club. He literally has to become one of the worlds best strikers for it to be remotely justified.

Correction, we don't have FFP issues, the club lied about that (not often I would out-and-out accuse the club of such a thing, but they did. Sue me for libel if you really want, Jeffington :D )

Not for this window but mamadou kene saly has bagged a hatrrick for Grasshoppers today. GC have an option to buy for peanuts in the summer. He looks like the kind of player who could do well in the PL
