Jota and Fifa

I restrained myself from typing "true to real life"....

Less said the better about the actual performance really.

I hope Jota gives him plenty.

MGW is crap. 2-0 down to Aaron Connoly so far.

Many a true word said in jest.

Didn’t work out too bad when Mason Mount was loaned out to “Championship Club” Derby County.

Starting for Chelsea and playing for England now.

Just saying

And our record on loans is how good, exactly?

Just answering that point in isolation. The majority of our loans don’t work because the player isn’t good enough.

Of all the loans we’ve sent out this year, probably only Sanderson has a future here and he managed to work himself into being a starter for Cardiff (because he was good enough). Of all the middle tier players, they are all getting games (except Giles now he’s at Cov). And the no hopers, I don’t understand why we give them deals in the first place, to loan them out to nobodies.

I’m not arguing for or against loaning MGW. But saying “wolves loans don’t work” isn’t really a factor in the discussion.

The club will make the right call. If him barely playing but training with high Calibre players is right for him, then they’ll leave him here. If getting gametime at a lower level with poorer players will be better then they’ll send him out.

My problem with it is that:

a) If we don't know what he is (centre mid, number 10, wide forward, withdrawn striker?) then is another club with no real stake in him really going to know
b) We all know that if a team starts to struggle, the loan players are the first ones to get ditched as they're easily expendable, so you're reliant on whichever team he goes to being good
c) We have enough experience of players being used inappropriately to know that it's far from guaranteed that we or he will get anything like what we want out of it
d) He's still developing as a player and as a man. If this doesn't work out then it's a waste of a year that could prove critical
e) Most crucially, I hate the way it's so casually and commonly peddled as an easy answer. Evidence suggests that it's far more likely to fail than succeed

Of course a load of our fans hate him anyway, which I find bizarre.

I would like him to get pretty much a full season playing competitive football. It would do him the world of good IMO. I think he's too well thought of to go to someone struggling in The Championship, so he'd most likely play all their games.

If he stays with us he's only going to play Cup games or the occasional 10 min sub. He does have time on his side, but it's a waste of his development. He needs to be playing more.

A) I don’t think he had the required abilities for any of these positions, Jack of all trades. This is his problem and why he’s not getting much game time for us. He needs to move down to a lower level to get game time (if this is what’s required)

B) if they aren’t very good.

C) sending shit players to shit teams means more likely they will be used ineffectively or as a squad filler. Sending a good player should avoid It as he’s the best/one of the better players.

D)can’t argue. You trust the club to get it right. I don’t know if he needs games or more coaching. All I know is that he won’t get games here at his current level.

E) depends on the evidence. Plenty of success, plenty of failure. But the biggest variable is players ability.

MGW is a Maddison type player. The trendy term would be Mezzala or number 8, a driving midfielder deeper than a tradional 10. A player who in the main plays in the half spaces and links play between front men and wide/ central midfielders.

We don't really play with that player so it's difficult for him here. He either needs to transition to a 6 (Xavi type playmaker who can drive from midfield) or get out on loan to somebody who does play an 8/ 10. I don't think he can play as an inside forward and we have much better options in that position now.

I think he could play a 6 type game and be our Moutinho replacement long term but he needs to choose one way or another.

I think he’d be ok when we play 3-5-2 rather than 3-4-3, he could do the Donk “covering loads of ground and breaking into the box” role (without the heading but we get from Donk).

He’s got a lot of potential - still a lot to learn but I still have high hopes for him

MGW has suffered from coming through at the time we suddenly became good - if we were still in the Championship then he would be getting much more game time.

He's better than that level, by how much then not sure that I can say at the moment - he has some quality, but we have not been able to fit him in to the formations played so far.

Genuinely curious - what have you seen from MGW which would give you “high hopes” for him?

Some flashes of something special. Goal against Chelsea I think had some ace build up by him. But consistency is going to be key for him. He’s not there yet.

The one word descriptions about him by his teammates were very telling.

You'd struggle to say MGW has developed over the last two seasons. We've had a stable side and he doesn't deserve more game time than he has been getting. What if that remains for another two seasons? Nuno isn't a rotator and the trajectory of the side means we aren't likely to be at a stage where we can afford to give youngsters game time just for their development, so that's perfectly conceivable.

He is only 20, but he needs to kick on soon. Another 2 years of this isn't good for him or the club. I was against loaning him out previously but I think next season is the time to do it whenever that is. Swansea would be a good fit given their manager and style.

To be clear I'm not saying a loan can't or won't work. And yeah, Steve Cooper has worked with him and he played very well under him.

But it's the casual "send him out on loan" nonsense that annoys me. Like that'll fix everything.

I hear you.

But I think the “casual send him out on loan” thing is about getting him regular game time in a position that he is comfortable in and, eventually, can call his own.

When I went to Espanyol to watch him, he looked like he’d won a competition to play there.

He’s not actually that young any more. And he’s miles away from our first team. A loan might be the only way to keep him at Wolves without harming his development.

I’m guessing also that if he wasn’t “one of our own” a lot of people on here would have him down as the next Silas.
