Is it a protest or a genuine change of intent though? People see local elections as a free hit, but revert to type when it comes to national ones. Fine to have a Liberal Councillor, not an MP if that leads to a Labour Government

Which is why having an unthreatening leader like Starmer is useful.

I think for Labour to win an outright they need more than none threatening, they need someone Tory voters can embrace in Con/Lab marginals. He's not there yet. Not sure he has the charisma ever to be tbh, although he's probably enough to get a coalition with the Libs or SNP
