If you are going to pick Coady in the squad, the merits of which are irrelevant as he did, then it's very simple PR to pick him for the team tonight when it's a mix and match line up anyway.
Must be a kick in the teeth for Conor, two games at Molineux and didn't kick a ball. However he's lucky to still be in the squad based solely on the last two months of the season. Bringing Maguire on instead of him on isn't gonna do slab head any favours in the short or long-term either (especially after the fourth goal).

Struggling to think of a game England have won when you wouldn’t expect them to under Southgate?

We have some very good attacking players, he is absolutely not getting the best out of them and never has.

He’s living off two easy paths in tournaments.

Spain away in the Nations League.

Whatever people said afterwards, most expected us to lose to Germany in the Euros.

Which very good attacking players?

Yeah was weird not playing Coady in either game. Especially the one in front of fans

Alarming the way that unravelled but Hungary did just seem to score every time they attacked in quite a freak manner.

He’s approach tournaments very well as manager so far so I’m sure we will perform pretty well again tbh. I think the problem is that he’s not very imaginative and there’s the question about him having the in game nous to win something (never thought he’d get anywhere near that when appointed mind!)

Yeah, if we were fans of Hungary we definitely describe it as unsustainable

Expected us to lose perhaps, but player for player it was evenly matched.

Foden, Saka for two.

Gareth - supporters should stay with the players. Errm, they are - it’s you they weren’t happy with.

Foden maybe. But we can't play like City do. Saka, meh. Would he get in the 2006 team? I would say no. He's fine and all that but he's no lost world superstar like Barnes in the 80s and 90s.

As for games we don't expect to win, that'll be <10% of all games we play.

I'm not defending him at all, I think some of the arguments are wide of the mark though.

Went down the David O'Leary "lotta young players" route, but took overall responsibility for it.

Obviously off the back of a long season that takes some edge off of the result, but getting dicked at home by anyone let alone Hungary (who are not a good team Gareth, organised and functional, but not good) is never a good look regardless of the opposition or importance of the game.

Donck played his 3rd game in a row at rch tonight. Do they have an injury there or is now first choice as not as bad as Boyata?

He's had a dream run in both tournaments. And we were basically at home last time. The only reason we didn't expect to beat Germany is because we never do, nothing to do with quality on the pitch.

As for 2006 it doesn't really matter who'd make the team, the important thing is how we stack up against other nations currently. I'd take our players over everyone bar France.

Did we not have a "dream" run in tournaments because of how well we have performed though? Our seeding has improved because of tournament performances, and he has "managed" games to ensure we got the easier routes, that's not luck is it, that's good management.

We've absolutely clattered through all of the tournament qualifiers in a way i haven't seen from an England side before.

Remember when we didn't qualify for tournaments or needed a playoff?

I'm repeating myself, but without Southgate we don't make the semi and final we do. The team spirit, the lack of cliques, the media buy in that's all because of him. He's got a good, but not great squad.
If you look at 2006 (not looking this up, but players around at that time)
James,
Neville
Ferdinand
Terry
Campbell
Cole
Beckham
Gerrard
Hargreaves
Lampard
Cole
Scholes
Rooney
Owen (injured against Sweden)

Who is getting in that team? Walker over Neville in the modern game, Kane over that version of Owen, Pickford over James, not sure anyone else is.

The reason we didn't win those games is also because of him and his lack of in game management

They all played like they’d got their private taxis outside ready to whisk them off to the airport. I bet Coady was glad he didn’t get brought on.

Many of them have played almost continuously for 4 years. It doesn’t excuse a 0-4 home defeat to a functional outfit but many must have had their eyes firmly set on a well earned break.
I’m with others that we have a reasonable squad but it is lacking the quality required in certain areas. I don’t see anyone else coming in and doing much better even though I am critical of Southgate at times.

Don’t think we’ll be getting a home international at Molineux again for a while. Booing and chanting “you don’t know what you’re doing” to the manager. I mean, they’re right, but you know what the FA are like!
The “you know what you are” chant during the Hungary National anthem probably sealed that before a ball had been kicked.

I was listening to 5live on the way home and Dublin and Warnock were watching the warm up saying our players were going through the motions and there wasn't any intensity, they effectively called it before the game. Some people will say you are playing for your country, pride, etc etc - I looked at tickets for tonight and after they'd gone to the loyal England fans you were left with £50 for an adult and £40 for a kid in the BW, if you've paid that then you have every right to be pissed off, but the players are just not there, they are human and want to go on holiday. Of course if this was the World Cup they wouldn't have played like that, but that's when I'll judge them.
