So he did, can't conclusively say it was for offside though, and if he did he was wrong, it could've been for anything.

The wider point is they were looking for a reason not to give the goal and the reason they have was not a clear and obvious error as the referee could not have known if Cavani would've affected play.

You can't give offside according to the rules.

If no one actually knows why the goal was ruled out it makes it fairly obvious it was not 'clear & obvious' - chuck the whole fucking mess in the bin.

There’s no rabbit hole because it was given for offside not the foul. Pretty sure Linekrr said as much (don’t make me re watch it).

Teams used to block Doc and Semedo all the time under Nuno and have someone like Tarkowski have a free header to put it back accross the face. Difference being the blocker wasn’t doing it from an offside position.

Nope, still wrong.

Ramsey was interfering with play because he caused a defending player to change their actions.

The clear and obvious thing is the issue. It’s shoud be “is it the right decision”.
Agree with this.

'Clear and obvious' is subjective. It should be replaced with 'the correct decision'.

I accept that the latter is a little open to interpretation but the clear and obvious terminology provides a get out for both VAR and more importantly it's operators. The likes of Peter Walton love it as it enables them to be woolly in their analysis and with their reasoning for poor initial decisions.

The rules are pretty clear

  • a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12

Agreed. The angle from behind the opposite goal, if they show anything conclusive, show that Cavani just ran straight him to in -IMO. Stark staring body check? No way. Argue it either way? Sure. Yet by the time you're at that stage the only thing clear and obvious is that it isn't.

Loving this. Algeria streaming forward while Sierra Leone just throw bodies in front of the ball and shin it over their own bar. What a tournament.

I've quite enjoyed the games I've watched so far - nice to have football in the afternoon again too.

AFCON is always a good time, IMO. Not always the highest standard of play but then you lot are quite spoiled in that regard. ;)

Ramsey standing in Cavani's way is enough for him to become active and therefore offside.
