Loan Watch 2021-22

Are we comparing MGW with David Silva?

I think we might have the wrong Silva……😂

He's only 21 that's not a late bloomer. I'd leave him there for the season, then build the team around him next.

I just don't get this 'he's been round the first team squad 4-5 years' stuff. From my memory he's rarely had a full game, never had a run in the team. Expecting him to show what he's got with 5 minute cameos when we're chasing a game is optimistic in the extreme. I was quite frustrated for him last season when Nuno bought him back from Swansea and gave him minimal game time.
Now I really don't know if he'll make it as a decent Premier league player but after his exploits at Swansea and Sheff Utd, he surely deserves a chance

But doesn't that tell you something that more than one manager has deemed him unsuitable for a regular starting place ? Don't get me wrong I would love him to come back and be the missing piece of the jigsaw (Jens Dowe :) ) must there must be a reason that managers have not trusted him? (apart from the phenomena that absent players attain mythical legendry status in fans eyes)

He's performing at the same level or above Grealish did when he was playing in the Championship, from what I can tell.

When you say more than one manager you mean Nuno and Bruno, in fact Bruno wanted him to stay and fight for a place but the player wanted regular first team football and I don't blame him...let's face it most fans were saying that's exactly what he should do.
I've just not seen enough of him to say he will or won't make it

At the time he wasn’t going to get a look in. But with Trincao being rubbish, Traore rubbish/not interested, Podence injured/covid, Neto setback and Hwang…

He’d have been starting games. But at the time he/we didn’t think that was the case

We haven't played a formation which would ideally suit him since around this time 2 years ago at which point he probably wasn't strong enough to play there week in week out and if rumours are true probably didn't have the application either. Like most on here I've seen a lot of Championship football, you don't do what he is at that level without having the ability to do it in the PL.

Go 3421/3412 with him from January and we'd be a better side than we are now even without any new signings.

Didn't he play as a wide forward for Swansea?
It looks like he's more of a 10 for Sheff, although I haven't seen loads of them.
From my memory he also played an 8 or 10 role when he won the world cup

He’s playing as an inside forward at Sheff Utd no? And the same at Swansea? Which is what we’ve tried to play for the last 4.5 years bar the 9 months of 352.

Obviously under Nuno in the PL for some bizarre reason the forwards were parked out on the wing (an element due Traores strengths/preferences).

But I agree he could come in and play the role Hwang and Trincao are supposed to be playing at the minute and play as an #8 in a 352 or 433. But I don’t think Wolves can play a 3412 unless we’re 1) dominating the game or 2) he’s playing as a false 9 (we’ve done it before) because otherwise out of possesion we’re a bit short or asking Raul to track the FB.

Not really no. They are playing 2 in behind the forward of which he's one rather than 2 wider forwards cutting in like us. He's playing much more centrally than we do ordinarily.

3412 or 3421 with MGW and Podence (hopefully at some point Neto) in behind Raul or Hwang alongside him and MGW in behind, firstly gets players closer to Raul, secondly gives us the option to drop MGW deeper and make it a midfield 3 when we are getting overrun and thirdly means at least 2 of Adama, Trincao and Hwang are off the pitch all of whom whilst all having invididually decent games have had a lot more poor ones this season

I think that is how Lage wants to play (and is the only way to play 343 which isn’t underlapping FBs). But it isn’t working because Trincao and Podence are the only ones who can play it, but one of those goes missing/runs into traffic or makes bad decisions and the other we can’t get on the pitch. Traore plays where he wants and Hwang is useless at receiving the ball in tight spaces so naturally drifts wide.

Plus it’s harder to play that narrow in the PL as they’ll take it off you if your touch is poor or the space isn’t there (unless your Everton).

Same as why in the championship Cav, Costa, Jota we’re great at playing narrow in between the lines effectively playing a box with the deep midfield two. But after the first few games in the PL teams took these spaces away and the players didn’t have the individual quality to receive it in those positions so get pushed wider and wider. We remedied it by going 352 and later having Traore put in a million crosses and one of them go on Rauls head.

As I said, Lage wants to play narrow and did but it just isn’t happening because of the personnel’s abilities/availability/form.

Do you think he has a future here, in years to come?
Hard to tell! One thing doing it in league 1, another making an impact in the premier league
