Loan Watch 2021-22

be interesting to see what happens with Sanderson. Having been injured has taken him a bit of time to get in the team but all I see is good reviews from Birmingham fans
Went off injured last night apparently

I watched the game, he's certainly quick, just as well as a few times he got badly pulled out of position and had to recover. I'd be leaving him where he is for now.

An update from the last week or so:

MGW's goal from 4:30 - a nice one-two with Billy Sharp and well-taken. Two more full games from him this week.

Giles is another one with two full games, his first more productive than the second. He got two assists in a comeback from 3-0 to draw 3-3 at Stoke. The second one is a great inswinging cross from the left.

It's been a decent few days for the Blues pair. Two wins and two clean sheets, although Sanderson had to go off injured midweek.

A debut start and a goal and assist to mark it for Theo Corbeanu this week. He followed up a sub appearance at the weekend with 83 minutes in the 3-0 win over Sunderland. The goal was nicely taken and he also put in a great cross after good work down the left.

Two games and two defeats for Dadashov and Tondela. Nothing of note from him unfortunately.

Conor Ronan played another full game last weekend, this time in a 1-0 defeat at home to Dundee. He really pulls the strings in that midfield, though - at one point splitting the defence with a Neves-esque pass that his team really should have got a penalty from.

Grasshoppers: Bonatini and Gomes (back in the side) both got full games in a 3-1 win at Sion, but neither played a part in the goals.

On as sub: Patrick Cutrone made a couple of sub apps: first half an hour in a win at Sassuolo where he won the penalty for the equaliser, then the second half in a 2-2 draw with Genoa last night. Matheson came off the naughty step last weekend to play 35 minutes in a 1-1 draw - only to get booked and see his team concede a 97th minute equalizer.

Joe Young and Runcorn were knocked out of the FA Cup by FC United of Manchester last weekend in a 2-0 defeat.

Unused subs: Vinagre (2 games), Marques (2 games), Lonwijk, Samuels, Sondergaard (both games)
Not in squad: Perry (injured), Bolla (injured), Campana (?)
No game: Smith.

From the weekend:

Morgan Gibbs-White - Sheffield United, The Championship

A full game in a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn - another lively display in which he hit the post, but a poor result for them.

Matija Sarkic - Birmingham City, The Championship

Bit of a shocker this one. Blues were one up with 20 mins to go only to chuck it away and lose 2-1. The first caught Sarkic in no-mans land for a cross, and, for the winner, he clumsily parried a shot twice without clearing it.

Ryan Giles - Cardiff City
Playing in a more defensive role under Morison, and didn't play a part in either of the goals, but another 90 minutes for him all the same in a first win in ages.

Renat Dadashov - FC Tondela, Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Another full game without a goal for Dada, but a 4-2 win all the same

Nigel Lonwijk - Fortuna Sittard, Dutch Eredivisie

Made his full debut against PSV but it wasn't a happy one - they lost 4-1. Played on the left of a back three which kept getting caught high up the pitch. Won't have done himself any favours by casually jogging back for the third either.

Connor Ronan - St Mirren, SPL

Another 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw at St Johnstone.

Luke Matheson - Hamilton Academicals, Scottish Championship

Back in the team and played the full game in a 1-1 draw.

Leo Bonatini, Tote Gomes - Grasshoppers Zurich, Swiss Super League

Full games for Tote and Bonatini again in a 1-1 draw with Young Boys.

Jackson Smith, Kettering Town

Played in a 3-1 defeat at home to Darlington. Rooted to his line for the second, a header off a corner, and should have saved a late penalty which bobbled over him.

Joe Young, Runcorn Linnets

Played in a 1-1 draw vs Trafford.

On as sub: Cutrone played the second half of a 2-2 vs Genoa.

Unused subs: Campana, Samuels, Sondergaard, Vinagre, Marques.

Not in squad: Perry, Sanderson, Bolla (all injured).

can't find it now, but read an article the past week including an interview with MGW. In it he expressed his frustration at the lack of chances with the wolves first team, and he repeated his belief that going on loan was the right decision for him.

suggests to me that Nuno didn't fully trust him. equally, I remember him being interviewed (think on motd) at the end of last season, and he was asked about first team chances, and he handled the question well, stating he respected the manager and had a good relationship with him.

I still think that Morgan could work very well in a Lage team.

From the weekend:

Morgan Gibbs-White - Sheffield United, The Championship

Another busy game for MGw but nothing to show for it in a goalless draw. Involved in a lot of the attacking play again and had a shot from the edge of the box that went just wide.

Matija Sarkic and Dion Sanderson - Birmingham City, The Championship

Both played in a 2-0 defeat at Hull, made harder when Gary Gardner got sent off for them. Sanderson seems to be spraying some long balls out from the back, to varying degrees of success.

Ryan Giles - Cardiff City, The Championship
A full game and an assist - this one of a fine corner - in a 2-1 win at Preston that continues Cardiff's revival.

Theo Corbeanu - Sheffield Wednesday, League One
Played 74 minutes of a 3-2 win at Accrington and scored a fine goal - a one-two with a team mate before powering a right-foot shot into the bottom corner. Looks the part.

Goal on 4:30

Connor Ronan - St Mirren, SPL

Played an hour in a 1-1 draw at home to Livingston.

Renat Dadashov - Tondela, Primeira Liga

Another full game for Dada, but once again, nothing to show for it, although his shot did lead to a pen for their second (they scored 3 penalties in total) and Tondela won 4-2.

Leo Bonatini, Tote Gomes - Grasshoppers Zurich, Swiss Super League

Full games for both. Leo got another penalty, his 4th goal in 6 games, and had a half volley saved. Wasn't enough though, as they lost 3-2.

Joe Young, Runcorn Linnets

Another win and another clean sheet for young Joe.

On as sub: Nigel Lonwijk came on for the last 15 minutes at Heracles with his team 3-1 down, seemingly at RB/RWB. Campana came on for the last 5 minutes or so in Grasshoppers defeat.

Unused subs: Samuels, Matheson, Cutrone, Vinagre, Marques.

Not in squad: Perry and Bolla (injured), Sondergaard, Smith.

Cutrone... I'd forgotten about him recently. Pretty shit so far, 1 goal to end a 15 month drought and that was against our local side Salernitana who are bottom and shipping goals for fun

Jokanovic on the outs at Sheff Utd - hopefully whoever comes in after (Colin?!) keeps giving MGW game time

A quick midweek round-up:

MGW got 90 minutes in a 1-0 win at Reading. Smacked a long-range free-kick off the bar but wasn't involved in the goal. Giles got a full game in a loss at home to Hull, while both Sarkic and Sanderson contributed to Blues' clean sheet at Coventry, with the keeper making some important saves.

Theo Corbeanu kept up his good form by getting the assist for the winner in his full game vs MK Dons.

Unused subs: Vinagre, Sondergaard.

Update from the weekend:

Morgan Gibbs-White - Sheffield United, The Championship

A full game under the new boss Heckingbottom and was busy as ever, having a couple of shots saved but no goals or assists in a 2-0 win.

Matija Sarkic and Dion Sanderson - Birmingham City, The Championship

A full game for both and another clean sheet in a 1-0 win at home to Blackpool.

Ryan Giles - Cardiff City, The Championship
Another full game and and assist in a 2-1 win at Luton as Cardiff continue to pull away from the bottom three. This one was a wicked cross from deep whipped right across goal.

Patrick Cutrone - Empoli, Serie A

Played an hour of Empoli's 2-1 win over Fiorentina, but wasn't on the pitch when they came back from a goal down to win in the last 5 minutes.

Connor Ronan - St Mirren, SPL

Played 73 minutes of a 2-0 defeat at Hearts.

Renat Dadashov - Tondela, Primeira Liga

Played an hour in a 2-0 defeat at Sporting.

Leo Bonatini, Tote Gomes - Grasshoppers Zurich, Swiss Super League

Full games for both in a 1-0 defeat at home to Lugano. Bonatini had a shot that he couldn't quite steer in from a good cross.

On as sub: Theo Corbeanu came on for the last 15 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Wycombe - had a couple of chances to win it but had one saved and blasted the other over the bar. Austin Samuels came on for the last 25 minutes at Celtic Park as Aberdeen chased an equaliser, but to no avail. Nigel Lonwijk came on for the last 25 minutes after fellow centre-half got a straight red - could be a run in the team for him now. Bolla and Campana were subbed on after 77 and 86 mins respectively.

Unused subs: Matheson, Sondergaard.

Not in squad: Perry and Bolla (injured), Vinagre, Marques (Covid), Smith.

No game: Young.
