Max Kilman

Has he got any family still in Ukraine?

I liked Richards, he was definitely a change from the defenders we had previously who looked as comfortable on the ball as Neil Collins did when the ball wasn't within heading range.

He did like to party though.

Don't see why none Wolves careers should be used to judge how good a player is for us. Emlyn Hughes captained England at Liverpool (as he did while with us) and won everything bar the league cup, it doesn't have an impact on how he's viewed at Wolves.

Richards was very good for a period of time for us, but that period only really lasted from March 95 to Jan 96. He was only decent after that and phoned in his last 12 months
Because Matt Doherty.

Low bar definitely.

I don't think Deano or Joleon looked 'that' brilliant on the ball. Boly either for that matter. All have a bit of an awkward gait and are never comfortable on the wrong foot. Sakho esque if you like.

Whereas Kilman, Coady and Saiss are all relatively confident in both possession as well as carrying the ball forward and receiving under pressure - as the last two especially should be given their previous positions.

Ludo and Jody were much more old fashioned muck and bullets CH's for me, with Veno incredibly one footed but able to play across a number of positions. Biased I know, but definitely one of our most underrated players of the last 30 years.

Bar his play off nightmares [two if I recall], I thought Jamie Smith was an excellent full back and probably should have achieved more in the game than he did.

Doc also had ages of being shite for us before his purple patch. I hope he still has nightmares about LuaLua the way I do.

He was very good at what Nuno asked from him, no one has said otherwise.

Bar his debut (!) Neil Emblen tended to look good on the ball when we played him at centre half, but we spent the bulk of his time(s) here sticking him in central midfield because we couldn't be bothered buying a proper player there.

And yes, the majority of Doherty's Wolves career was awful.

2012/13: Brought into a struggling defence. Made it worse and we got relegated to the third tier
2013/14: Started the season but got injured around October/November and never properly got his place back, Sam Ricketts was miles better at RB than him
2014/15: A fair start to the season, then became an absolute liability as we got panned through November. Lost his place to an untried Iorfa before Christmas and didn't start many after that
2015/16: Played about three games before Christmas. Then we sold our only LB and parked him there rather than buying a replacement. Was so shit we had to sign Jeremy Helan to hold his hand.
2016/17: Pretty rubbish on either side. Lost his place at LB/LWB at one stage to George Saville.

Then three largely good years in the most bespoke role you will ever see, though his limitations even with so many responsibilities being taken away from him were becoming more and more obvious.

So obvious he was going to be appalling at Spurs, not many Wolves fans would ever call Matt Doherty a good footballer.

Was it is debut or 'second' debut when he returned from Palace? Treading on the ball and falling over as it was played back to him straight from the kick off. Up there with Mark Williams' first touch or what should have been his first touch.

Seem to recall Emblen having a few games at CF as well.

First debut, Reading at home.

We played Emblen at least once everywhere bar in goal and at left back.

Weird, I never considered Jamie Smith anything more than mediocre.

I was a teenager at the time though

When you are comparing them with what I had seen previously growing up when I was watching Wolves, I'd seen Hindmarch, Stancliffe, Madden, Westley, Streete, Bellamy, Shirtliffe etc. Richards was a god amongst those, ungainly or not.

Didn't dislike Jamie Smith but we did well getting Dougie Freedman and Kevin Muscat (before he went all 'hard man/snotter') in exchange

Nowt wrong with Peter Shirtliff. Excellent defender. Snapping his Achilles when he was already old did him but he gave us a very good year before that.

Jamie Smith was the only player I’ve ever seen who repeatedly used a terrible touch to beat an opponent. He’d knock the ball too far forwards committing his opponent into a tackle that Smith would then win more often than not allowing him to advance down the wing with his opponent floundering on the ground. Used to do it a couple of times a game!

Oh, I've seen and winced at all of those as well. Standing on the South Bank [with chicken pox and covered in calamine with a hat and scarf across my face] and watching Stancliffe bundle that Barnsley cross into his own net was a particular low point.

Centre halfs were often cult hereos (Berry, Hazel, Streete) who's status sometimes rose above their ability. The list you've provided (and others) means not all were afforded the same sentiment!

We had one or two poor keepers and performances, some downright lazy midfielders (along with those who you looked at and thought 'I can do better than that'), but I think we've excelled ourselves in the past with dodgy centre halves... Even in our recent upturn, we still managed to sign the Miranda's and Vallejo's of this world. I haven't even got started on centre forwards but I'm gunning for Small and Taylor first.

On strikers:

For rank stupidity, you can't beat us re-signing Leon Clarke for actual money when we still had people at the club who knew what he was like, in terms of basic ability and character.

For end results, Frankowski (though it wasn't even mostly his fault, never mind all his fault) will stand out but I'll nominate Cutrone for being right up with the worst. Never wanted to be here, shit attitude (I understand only too well how hard it can be living abroad as a young man, it doesn't mean you get to not try), huge fee (not far off our transfer record at the time), 2 league goals and we'll end up releasing him on a free.

In terms of centre halves, Manuel Thetis is possibly the worst as far as ability goes, but he was a short term loan who would have cost us hardly anything. Ditto Eric Young who was appalling but ancient and on a free. It's got to be Roger Johnson, performance and attitude relative to expectation and cost was nothing short of disastrous.
