New Laptop Required

Okay Guys, I know there's many of you who are well into computing, and i could do with some advice. My current Samsung (running Windows 7) is in dire need of replacement and i've heard that the choices seem to be
A) another Windows based laptop
B) a MacBook
C) Chromebook

My useage is general internet browsing, a few text documents, collection of photographs, Spotify and internet banking.

Which should i change to ?

All advice gratefully received.

Depends on your budget really.

A Chromebook will do all you need for probably the lowest price. Bit restrictive if you want to do anything else though.
 
just hear a lot of people slating windows 10. what can't you do with chromebook then ?
 
Personally I much prefer windows 10, but it needs a slightly more powerful spec and has generally worse battery life.

A Chromebook is basically a laptop running the chrome browser with the option of running Android apps (like on a phone or tablet). You can't (easily) install other programs and stuff (iTunes etc), shouldn't be an issue for you though.
 
Windows 10 was a little ropey to begin with but it improves with every update. Then again, I use Classic Shell and make it look like Windows 7.

Mine needs replacing soon, I'm at the stage where it's held together with Gorilla Glue.
 
Do you need a keyboard? Save some money and get a tablet
 
How will you be accessing photos Mick? Have you got them saved on a external hard drive or a network storage?

The reason I ask is we store all of our photos on a Western Digital NAS and I've yet to find a way of accessing them on our Chromebook. Worth taking into consideration.
 
Chromebooks are shite. Avoid.

Im using a Lenovo x1 Yoga, it's as fast as anything and has a touchscreen, so it's essentially a laptop/tablet. Would highly recommed for multi-tasking between tabs.I counted the other day - I had 42 tab open on one Chrome window, another 4 in another window and 5 in an Incognito window. This would normally crash a laptop but the Yoga can take it.
 
Chromebooks aren't shite! If you just need something for browsing the web and doing general office stuff (using Google Apps) it's pretty unbeatable for less than £200. We're just about to start using them in school and they fit our needs perfectly.
 
Agree with Machin! Chromebooks have no place in a work environment, but are fine for general stuff.

@Machin you can install Android apps on Chromebooks now, sure WD must have an app to access photos on the NAS? If not you could just install X file explorer.

My Chromebook is too old to be able to install Android apps unfortunately. I've used the WD app on my phone and it's clunky as hell. It may have got better, but accessing via a generic file explorer app over the lan would be far better.
 
thanks for all your advice guys. i'm not that technically minded just looking for something that does simple tasks. Mac Books are far too expensive for my needs, so its a toss up between windows 10 or chromebook.
regarding photos currently on my laptop, i guess they could be downloaded to an external drive and plugged into whichever new model i purchased - or am i being too naive ?

I wouldn't let Win 10 be too great a factor in your decision. It's really not the devil's spawn I thought it was going to be. And if you don't want to or can't be bothered to customize its clunky start menu, then you can make it look like Win 7, like Pablowolf has.

Windows 7 4 lyf. So far it's only hindered me once
 
The latest generation of processors won't let you install Windows 7 now.
 
Support ends soon for 7 anyway, I think it’s next year. I’m considering doing a clean install of 8 on mine then upgrading to 8.1 with Start8. It’s a massive job though as updating 8 and resinstalling all my stuff will take days. Backing up isn’t an issue as everything’s on separate hard drives but just don’t know if I can be arsed to go through it all. I may just run 7 til the day it dies then reluctantly switch to 10.
 
Any reason you're resisting moving to 10, Booz?
 
Can't say I've had any huge issues with my home laptop on 10. (Work is another matter - lots of conflicts with other software)
