New - The things that really annoy you

This was an issue long before covid.

You were able to get a face to face appointment though even if you were booking it 3 weeks In advance. Now you get a phone call if you’re lucky and then might get an appointment.

Just last Friday I chit-chatted with a random stranger walking the dog. Turns out he was walking his puppy that he’d got on retiring at 60 as a GP 3 months ago. The guy was borderline traumatised from his experience as a GP with the way the role and patient care had changed over the years, and as with many other industries and professions, covid severely amplified changes that were already taking place.

This guy was very troubled because the role had changed so much it became to give his patients the care they deserved. He mentioned the emotional blackmail placed by employers on caring workers and the abuse of that, and in his situation the continued pressure applied even after retirement - the NHS has recently called for newly retired GP’s to come out of retirement to help ease the current crisis and he was being badgered about that, but in no fit state to help.

The poor guy was in such a state the puppy appeared to be some sort of therapy. If we’d stop working people like slaves until they break and start valuing them instead maybe people such this fella would’ve been willing and able to help out.

His assessment of the situation sounded horrendous and I suspect it’s not just GP’s feeling like that either.

I guess it depends where you are and who your GP is - I got an evening appointment 2 days after calling (which was daytime) the got a referral and had my op all within a month. Rang up with a complication and had a call back from a GP within minutes.

Yep, I've been lucky it seems recently, been able to get an appointment if I needed it

I've got to change GP as I'm miles outside the catchment area for my current one now, I keep putting it off as I really don't want to have to explain my condition all over again to a stranger and having had an awful GP previously, I'm worried about the same thing happening.

Must just be Penn Manor who are bloody useless then.

In theory the process should be a transfer of your medical records from the old GP to the new GP. As I say, in theory.
Once this is done, the new GP can support you by engaging with you, and having access to your medical history.

Doubt it @PuntsWolf , your complaint is a common one I hear, and @EpsomWolf highlights it well. Decades of under investment in GPs has them leaving in droves, and they also have to manage so much of primary care nowadays, not what their skillset is!

I’m sure it’s not just healthcare. Tons of new builds going up around Codsall, Perton, Wombourne etc. No increase in primary schools, which were already oversubscribed. So where are these kids going to go?

DfE have had a pretty solid programme of rebuilding/expanding schools for 5+ years.

Pretty much my question when they’re on about building 5,000 houses on the farm land that runs between Ashmore Park, Essington and Long Knowle. No mention of any supporting infrastructure such as schools, shops or doctors, just shitloads of money making houses. If and when that happens I’m moving without a second thought, it’s hard enough to get a doctor’s appointment now, with a projected minimum of 7,000 more people living five minutes away I’ll have no chance.

Fair enough if so, but haven’t seen any evidence of it near me. I’ll let you know in a year or two when I’m trying to get my kid into a primary school whether it was successful or not.

building sare one thing. resourcing them and having quality teachers is another. I also dread what this govt might do to the curriculum.

Not sure exactly where you live but I've worked on a new build school for Wolverhampton Council. They were looking at one or two others at the same time with other contractors too.

Since seen another scheme at St. Peter's in the DfE pipeline.

Slothead countersunk woodscrews. Always hated 'em, always will.
PITA, although the father-in-law nearly always used them, but then he did a 7 year apprenticeship and never picked any tools up for the first 6 months.

They’re fucking wank. Winding them in is bad enough by hand or pistol drill but getting the fuckers out again takes forever. One that gets really tight isn’t even going to start to move then you’ve got no slot left to grip once the driver starts slipping and chewing the metal away. Took a couple of old doors off last couple of days and all were slothead, mostly full of paint. Ended up smashing a flat head screwdriver behind the hinges and just levering the hinges off. They’ll never not annoy me!

Any joiner or anyone who claims to be a "dab hand at DIY" that uses slot screws need striking off/shooting!

As I said f-i-l spent 50 years using them, none of yer fancy electric screwdrivers either, a proper pump action jobby. No idea how he did it, I'm far too cack handed, give me cross heads and an electric every day.
