Newcastle 1-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

YoungWolf whilst I've got you, can you explain please why we set up as we do for set pieces?
What's with everybody in a 20 yard wide line in the area, for example for their goal when Saiss headed it away it was only ever coming back in with nobody outside the box, would appreciate your 'more knowledgeable' opinion
I would guess it's because the priority is on defending the penalty area, as that's where the most danger is. It needs to be tweaked I think though because as we saw last night, we don't stop/put enough pressure on the ball coming back in. That said, if Saiss clears it properly/Dendoncker defends properly Lascelles doesn't score.

Didn't particularly enjoy the game TBH - we're so much better than that, and I can't help but feel that the players are enjoying this season about as much as I am. And that's not all that much at all.

Afraid I've not seen anything in Jose that would warrant paying for him permanently in the summer. He actually reminds me of Jake Cassidy when the ball is in the area - less movement than a glacier. With Raul, you expect a challenge for the ball when its played into the danger area. I never get that with WJ - its like he's expecting the ball to fall for him perfectly every time. Definitely a no from me.
We have played 26 games and the line we are so much better than that can be legitimately used for about 15 of those games and that clearly isn’t where we should be or want to be. Fabio may turn into a superstar but is too slow and too weak to start every week. WJ , I had high hopes but he is running out of time to impress. Moutinho and Neves together still doesn’t convince me , sorry.
Do we really sacrifice Coady? If it’s 4 at the back then probably with a new ch coming in.
Vitinha either needs minutes or he is gone too. RAN is worth the punt as back up to Jonny but 20m is a helluva punt.

My take on last night. Seen enough of Jose to say no way Jose. Running away from the ball to the point where one pass hit his arse! Seems to only be able to make runs to the near post, even when it's obvious to every man, his dog and cat, that the ball's gonna be hit hard and low across the face of a goal, where, if he were in a more central position, it's an easy slide/tap into an empty net. Basically, he can't sniff a goal. Moutinho - love him - 5 foot 7 and all that - but it's over for him now. Not complimenting, at all, an always hard working Neves. Nice goal by the way from the original wonderkid from Porto. Coady and Donk - what is the point. At least Saiss made a point saving block at the end. As to Nuno his tictacs, again, were a joke. All adds up to a pretty poor display, all round. Lucky to have got a point. Really deserved nothing for the no-show that was the first half.

The forum appointed him. There was a ceremony and a small stipend attached.

I don't agree with all the analysis and as it's a Spiers piece it's littered with pointless similies - he even does the Swiss cheese one, but what it does do is handily collect the 15 goals we've conceded from wide crosses this season

My question is: do you search for a CDM in the summer and push Neves further forward to dictate the play, or do we try and directly replace Moutinho like for like?

I'm quite enjoying Neves breaking into the box and linking up play at the moment.
Or you could give Otasowie a try in the role for the rest of the season and see if that works first as its his position. We saw against Chelsea what he allows Neves to do. I am disappointed he has not had more minutes. What was the point of signing Vitinha or bringing back MGW if they dont get a chance? Fabio has had lots of minutes, due to Raul's injury , but he still gets them. The argument on here is that he is our player. Well so is Otasowie.

I think they're being seen in training, whether that's adequate or not I don't know, I think some peoples disappointment is that they want to pass judgement on them not the coaches (not you Jasperwolf obvs.)

Typically dreadful analysis and article but those pictures are damning.

The set up is all wrong and this zonal marking of the back 3 isn’t working.

there are nine Wolves shirts in the box! Three Newcastle players in the box and we concede. Its not a good look , but it is also a familiar one.

Yeah I did read that. There isn't really any 'analysis' in there to speak of but we are very bad defending in the box this season. While I agree the set up needs work I think it's also down to individuals too. Neither Coady nor Dendoncker are the types to get close to the marker and win the 'duel' whereas Saiss is better but loses concentration.

But then it just circles back to the fact that we need a new centre back :D

The failure to cut off the cross at source is what also stands out. I know you and Johnny have said in the past that this is a tactic, but surely not from those positions?

When the ball is right out on the touchline I think we feel we can handle it but yeah, you can't be allowing crosses in so easily when it's in and around the penalty area. I'm not sure that part is intentional though.

Nobody ever seems to attack the ball in. Wonder if we're worse this season due to the 'Raul' effect? Also Boly missing chunks of the season.
Me and my lads always remarked how Raul was often first to the ball defending set pieces.

It’s partly because we don’t have any natural defenders in there - firstly they aren’t reading danger, secondly they don’t react quickly to it and thirdly they don’t have the desire to get to the ball regardless.
Coady is a better defender than I thought he would be (although still poor 1 on 1), but Saiss’ positioning and understanding of threats in the box is poor, and Donk just doesn’t know how to defend at all.

Willy Boly is a natural defender and we can all see the difference he makes when he plays. As I think we all agree, a natural defender has to be our main focus this summer.

Surprised with how many ariel duels Saiss has lost out on that have cost us goals/points.

I like Sanches too, he’s been really good for Lille and can do both sides of the game - a massive upgrade on Donk.

todibo apparently stays up to the early hours playing video games and then is too knackered to train properly. He’ll either wake up at some point to what he’s going to lose and be a bargain for someone, or he’ll fall away badly.
Interesting article on todibo (and Saliba) given there is always discussion of him in here. Might be his latest loan is helping him turn the corner.
