Nottingham Forest 0-4 Wolves: EFL Cup 2nd Round - Verdict Thread

We may not have a chance of winning this, but looking at the players celebrating, it's got to do them good having a proper go at games like this and winning well, rather than just giving up on it before we get the chance to be inevitably knocked out by one of the big boys..?

Sounds like a very different early round cup game experience, which is good. Was surprised by the line up, expected Cundle, Marques to start at least.

Will look forward to watching the game back in the morning! 28 shots!!

This should never have been the attitude. We’ve beaten all of the big boys whilst we’ve been in the Premier League, no reason we couldn’t beat their weakened sides in cups.

Exactly this. No doubt we’ll take a couple of hidings ourselves but football is ultimately entertainment so the complete 180 in attitude from Lage is so refreshing

This is what I felt after the game on Sunday. We aren’t going to win the league and we really shouldn’t be getting relegated either. May as well have some fun.

I really enjoyed the game on Sunday despite us losing.

Totally agree. Just remember reading here many times there was no point going for it because Man City were going to win it.

Big shout out for Podence tonight too, great to see him building some confidence regardless of standard of opposition, and good to see his teammates picking up his runs and movement around the box.

1st post updated.

I'm gonna do this for all games this season so you can quickly see what the formation, lineups and other info was.

The links for the other games verdict threads are in the Fixtures sticky in the Wolves section.

Has anything been said about Campbell and Marques? Seems odd they didn’t play for the 23s and didn’t even make the bench tonight

“Under-23 stars Christian Marques, Luke Cundle and Chem Campbell – all of whom were on the bench in the opening two Premier League fixtures – were left out of James Collins’ development squad for Monday evening’s PL2 match with Reading, so it is likely the trio will be involved in some way on Tuesday night”

Maybe it was just a late decision to have first 11 players on the bench in favor of them.

Been out all day but did manage to get back to Mrs DW's to see all the goals on SSN.

Very nice to hear all the positive reports.

Well that was different! Opposition notwithstanding, an embarrassingly one-sided game, total dominance really. We look comfortable with possession and patient too.

RAN absolutely destroyed them down the left first half, Joao totally controlled midfield and we should have had a couple by the break.

Second half we were just relentless and two goal bursts and were out of sight. Tenacious performance from Fabio and good to see Pod back in the side. Exciting times ahead if we can apply this kind of performance to PL football.

Incidentally, sitting on my hands with the home fans while we score four second half goals was not an experience I want to replicate...

Couple of things that stood out btw... Thought our kit looked lovely in the flesh under the floodlights, so much better with gold socks too!

Also, Bruno is a total live wire on the sideline, was on at Hoever all second half, and seemed to tag team with Tony Roberts too... when one was sat down the other was constantly cajoling players. In contrast to poor Chris Hughton, who stood impassively while hearing Sabri Lamouchi's name being sung all night ffs...

What a sight it is to see Wolves play attacking football and trying to score as many goals as possible. Could have sat on the 2-0 lead and coasted home but capped the performance off with 2 more. I know lots of people had their doubts and it is early days but Fosun have to support Bruno as much as possible, it's obvious he can coach a side to play excellent football and he deserves that backing of the owners to see what he can get out of his team this season.

Regarding the performances, yes Forest were really poor but you still have to go and do a job and beat them and it should have been at least 2 or 3 more than it was at the end but we just couldn't finish in the first half.

Ruddy - Absolutely nothing to do, not one shot on target for Forest all night.

KIlman, Coady and Saiss - Can pretty much group them all together as they all were solid when needed and didn't have to do anything spectacular. Saiss scored one but pretty sure he stopped Fabio getting one as he attempted to score a second.

Ait-Nouri - Had their right hand side on toast all first half, put them on the deck 4 or 5 times and we really should have scored from one of the ball he put in but they weren't always the best.

Hoever - Good again but has to work on his final ball, all too often it hits the front man or is too close to the goalkeeper. Seems to find lots of space in high areas when he plays so could really do with that final ball improving.

Moutinho and Dendoncker - Both good and dominated the midfield, kept it ticking over but probably should have tried to shoot a little bit more in the first half when they had lots of space on the edge of the area.

Podence - If we can get him fit he's going to be an asset in this team, works hard, tenacious and gets in really good areas. Should have had a couple in the first half but tried to over play or was unlucky when he hit the post. Took his goal really well and if he can start to hit the net regularly he's going to be a key player for us this season.

Gibbs-White - He really is looking like the player everyone thought he could be and another who took his goal really well. Links play, is busy and always looking to create.

Fabio - Struggled for service in the first half imo, came short and didn't get it, went long and didn't get it and then numerous times crosses were poor. Got a good look at his movement in the second half and it was very good especially in the box but no one could pick him out like he picked Podence out. Great play to win the ball back for that goal and linked well for Trincao's when it looked like he might not get there. Should have scored when Saiss did, probably would have scored had Saiss not been there later on and then pulled a good save from their keeper. Definitely work in progress but i'm sure he's going to develop into a very good frontman.

Trincao - Took his goal very well and went close 2 more times. Can see him improving significantly over the next month or so and it's going to be refreshing to have more options in those wide/narrow attacking midfield roles.

No real impact from Cundle or Adama.

Fans were excellent again, just over 3000 for a Tuesday night cup game when everyone was expecting more u23s than we saw. Bring on Sunday.

Players looked like they enjoyed themselves last night which was good to see. 3rd goal was really well worked.
