The news thread is closed so I started an Olympic thread here. I hope that is ok. The first order of business is how come there is a Ladies team GB and yet no mens team GB? That proves its all about money for the men doesnt it?

No, it proves that the Scottish, Irish and Welsh Associations don't want one as they are scared it will lead to them losing their independent status. 2012 was only England and Wales and only then after Blatter guaranteed a one off wouldn't change things

so how do the women get away with it? Dont they also have independent status?

They don't see the women's game as compromising that. fwiw a GB mens team wouldn't have qualified anyway based on England's performance in the 2019 Euro U21s

[pedant]Can we change the thread title? It is officially the 2020 games...[/pedant]

Although I have lived in the states for the past 16 years my feelings have not changed (but I don't tell the locals). I still like to see the US be beaten in most sports, so congrats to the Swedish women!

I am making an exception for the mens basketball. The US coach - Gregg Popovich - is a great bloke. Intelligent, articulate, and outspoken for his support of social justice issues (also coach of the San Antonio Spurs for 20+ years). His legacy will be tarnished if they don't win gold.

20 minutes or so for Rafa Mir today. Spain drew 0-0 with Egypt (they also brought Vallejo on in the first half).

They started all of Simon, Olmo, Oyarzabal, Pau Torres, Eric Garcia and Pedri who played loads at the Euros.

Hat trick for Richarlison vs Germany (who look appalling) inside half an hour.

First medal in the shape of a bronze for Chelsie Giles in judo. Gold or silver will follow later today as we have a finalist in the taekwando.

Not the best of starts losing to France, as TT said beauty of the Olympics had it on in the background at the start, in the end completely invested in the game cheering France on.

That's the beauty of the Olympics. Watching a sport you don't understand shouting 'kick him Donald' at the tv
I said the same about the diving this morning. I’d become an expert in about 30 mins and was scoring as well as the judges.

Feeling sorry for Taylor Brown in the women’s triathlon. A flat tyre through the last couple of km’s in the cycling meant that she lost 20 odd seconds from the lead group she was in. She’s ran past two to get into the bronze position but will struggle to get anywhere near the leader.
