Palace 2-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

That's harsh on Romain, who is a more than capable squad player at this level and has never let us down. The rest I'm inclined to agree, apart from Sa, who you've got some weird dislike of - he's a good goalkeeper and as someone above said, we just need to reign him in a little, but he has the makings of a very good goalkeeper. Podence can go from looking like the answer to all our problems to completely ineffectual within the blink of an eye. I do wonder if that's because we're asking the players in those positions to do too much (same with Adama etc). The old "give the ball to the winger and see if they can magic up something special" tactic that we seem to have persisted with for far too long.

Ultimately, I'd rather we were bringing quality players in, rather than losing any more.
José Sa is 29 in January. I don't think "has the making of" comes into it with him. He is what he is and he has stupid moments in every single game, it really isn't weird. I'm not keen on goalkeepers who pass the ball straight to opposition forwards in the box, fake injury and then we concede or come for crosses for no reason and then drop it. All those have happened in October and November alone. He's not very good.

None of those are quality players, some of them have served us well to their best of their ability, some have been a let down.

On Saiss, most people want us to sign a CH, he never plays in midfield any more, he's 32 before the season finishes, at some point you cut him loose.

It's about the same for me. I mean he gave away a penalty and then was at least partially at fault for us going 1-0 down in our last two away games. He offers as good as nothing going forward, he can't cross for shit and doesn't score.

He's alright, he's just worth nothing like what we paid.
I don't think his mistakes have come with the same regularity as last season, there was an error just about every game last year. The twatting it high into the air happened twice (Arsenal scored off one), a couple of penalties (McGinn one was mindless), his positioning being poor so diagonal balls were arrowed over him, maybe we have been more compact as a unit and it's not looked as bad, but i feel he defended really well against Newcastle (for example), he looked like he'd actually been coached on his positioning!

But either way, he doesn't look like a 30million pound player.

Not aimed solely at DW, but I struggle to fully comprehend the downer some people have on this season so far.

A lot of work to do, but Bruno has been fine, Sa has been fine, we've hardly been leaking goals, our form is good, we're in a good position in the league.

Could do with scoring a few more and the squad is stale, one-dimensional and needs a refresh, but a lot of that's on the old manager?!

Dial back 12/18/24 months and criticising transfer windows or the manager got you the stink-eye, or labelled ungrateful/negative, often from the same people who are now most cheesed off! Very odd

Oh and maybe he's looked better (to me at least) because Kilman is next to him!

To be fair, after the Everton game there was a wave of positivity!

Whilst the Everton result/performance didn't mean we were going to manage Europe, the Palace defeat/performance doesn't mean we are going to finish bottom 6 either. Not necessarily on here, but it does feel that nuance has gone, it's not something that has ever been strong with football fans generally, but it seems to be worse since Covid for some reason.

As I said last night, I'm ok with us being up and down, it's what will happen with these players. The manager, I don't know yet. I'm ambivalent towards him.

It's why I don't care about a lot of the squad, go, stay, whatever. I do hate having a ropy keeper though, it's the most noticeable position when you have a liability (which I think Sa is, to be honest). We had that with Ikeme but not many other first choices down the years. I want reliability in a keeper, not what this guy brings. It's not fun, it's rubbish.

As for the "downer" - I'm paying more now to watch a worse product than I had 2-3 years ago. That isn't fun either.

Let me tell you why I'm pissed off.

- It costs me nearly £600 a year to watch half our games. This is money I don't really have. It's a ridiculous increase given next to no PL clubs put prices up this year but we did, and especially given the prices when Fosun took over. I don't want to be one of those ticket stub waving wankers but yes, in that context, it does matter more to me than someone who watches half a stream of a game.

- Our goalkeeper is a twat, and I don't deal well with that.

- We haven't improved our defence since we got promoted. To the point we currently have someone playing there who we exclusively considered to be a midfielder in the Championship.

- Our set pieces are mostly a joke.

- Most of our signings since 2019 have been questionable at best, awful at worst. Including £35m on a striker who doesn't look anything like a Premier League player, let alone an elite player.

- The manager talks big about signings, but when it comes down to it, doesn't have the clout to push the owners' hand. On whom...

- The owners employ people who routinely lie to us on any manner of affairs. And seem to want to milk the support more than anything else. They don't want to put any more money in which is fine, but they're also not spending money that the club makes on its own.

- The twats also seem to think we want to know about eSports. We don't.

- We frequently aren't fun to watch, nowhere near has much has changed from last season as people would have you believe. Sure, if teams let us play, we can look quite good. And never close me down and give me five yards of space, I can look like a shite David Beckham at 40. Soon enough though, that's easy for opponents to sort out.

- As we have next to no strength at executive level, you tell me why I should have any faith that January or indeed next summer will be a good window. Because I don't think it will be.

- We're currently flogging a 35 year old Joao Moutinho into the ground because we can't be arsed signing a midfielder.

- We genuinely tried to sign Kieffer Moore. Kieffer Moore.

There's more too but I'll leave it for now. It's not a reaction to Saturday, it's how the club has travelled over the last two years or so. I don't like it. I could find something else to do instead, I suppose.

I agree with pretty much all of that, bar the Sa name-calling.

Hopefully someone at the club reads it, as they obviously do, or have, read the forum before.

It doesnt mean more to you it justs means you pay more.

- Our goalkeeper is a twat, and I don't deal well with that.- He isn't but there

- We haven't improved our defence since we got promoted. To the point we currently have someone playing there who we exclusively considered to be a midfielder in the Championship. Agreed- but no-one is disputing that. Nuno didnt replace him either.

- Our set pieces are mostly a joke. Agreed- Indefensible

- Most of our signings since 2019 have been questionable at best, awful at worst. Including £35m on a striker who doesn't look anything like a Premier League player, let alone an elite player.-Agreed, but thats last years news.

- The manager talks big about signings, but when it comes down to it, doesn't have the clout to push the owners' hand. On whom...- Yep- That is the reality hence why I struggle to see who we replace many of those who you are ambivalent about. We have who we have and can only add to rather than whole scale replace.

- The owners employ people who routinely lie to us on any manner of affairs. And seem to want to milk the support more than anything else. They don't want to put any more money in which is fine, but they're also not spending money that the club makes on its own. Yes there is an issue there.

- The twats also seem to think we want to know about eSports. We don't. - I dont know enough to comment on that.

- We frequently aren't fun to watch, nowhere near has much has changed from last season as people would have you believe. Sure, if teams let us play, we can look quite good. - We genuinely tried to sign Kieffer Moore. Kieffer Moore.🤣🤣

I know it's hard for you to believe, but not everything is about you.

I didn't aim a single word of that post at you.

Here are the first choice PL keepers I wouldn't take over Sa (not to say they're worse, I just wouldn't actively swap them):

Ramsdale
Krul
McCarthy
Foster

He isn't very good.

By the way, by definition it absolutely does mean more to me and everyone else who pays for tickets. How the fucking hell could it not?

What? You made that leap, I wasn't even replying to you, or indeed anyone (PK if anyone but it was a general point about how shit our club is at the moment).

Stop being weird. I had a laugh at you weeks ago turning off a free illegal stream in disgust because it's genuinely pathetic. Then again maybe I just don't care enough what with going to games and stuff.

What, am I the only one who has "Jasperwolf" written on a sticky note and pasted on the bullseye of my dart board? Just me?

Ooh interesting game. I'd add whoever you consider Newcastle's first choice and Raya when fit, but I still think it's a bit early to have a firm view. That'd make him 14th which is about where I think this current squad would finish, so he's par for where we are at. Whether that's where we should be from the platform we had is a different debate, covered by the points in your main post.

Because even with a three you then get to use Saiss in midfield to close out games. Botman Coady Kilman in a three or you could go Semedo Kilman/ Boly, Botman Jonny/ Marcal for a back four and still have Neves Donk, Moutinho Saiss in midfield plus Sanches. The issue is what to do with Coady who is by no means the worst defender in the world.

Completely hypothetically

Sa

Kilman Coady Botman

Semedo Neves Sanches Jonny

Neto Jimenez Hwang

RAN
Traore
Trincao
Podence
Saiss
Boly
Dendonker
Ruddy
Marcal
Moutinho

That is as good as we can hope for at the moment I think. Its also a decent looking side with options off the bench
But that doesn't answer the question I've been asking since we didn't sign Botman....why is he the messiah at CB? Who has seen him play? What makes people think he's better than the players we already have?
I'm not saying he isn't the answer, I genuinely know nothing about him.
