Pre-season friendly thread

Moss decided after giving the penalty one of our lads had pushed a Celta player before the handball so overturned the call.
Saiss never touched ball or player, VAR rules it out but a simple ball down the outside ripped us open again (still a worry 12 months on)
Saiss incredibly lucky to stay on the pitch. Seems refs don't even do tell the manager to sub a player or he sends him stuff nowadays

I was watching via a very dodgy poor stream today so what did we do differently in the 2nd half that made such a difference? Still played a high line, still pressed, same formation but we were like a different team. Honestly should be walking away with a 3-1 minimum. We went from thinking we will never create a scoring chance to thinking how haven't we scored a shit load.

Also and for the sheer brilliance of what could have been 1) Coady attempting an overhead to score and 2) getting it wrong but almost getting an assist.

Well you see from the penalty what the issue was. Moutinho just stands off the bloke. He has it for 4 seconds and is allowed to just saunter into the attacking third and pick that ball out. No sign of any pressure, not even sure at what point he might have. I mean do something, hurry him, force him to turn back, cut out the passing lane, anything. Still, it’s a dive and we had chances so not all doom and gloom

Then why not give the push before he gave the penalty? If he saw a push, give a push, don't give a penalty and then give a push when the push must have happened before the handball. Just garbage.

(I'm not expecting you to explain the fat addled mind of Moss, of course)

Intensity, pashun, desire, all 3 of those were far higher in the 2nd half than the first. I do think Donk helped with that too.

At a guess he didn't see it and his assistant or 4th official have shouted down his ear. Only thing it can be that makes sense because he pointed at the spot...ran towards it still pointing then when he got to the pen spot, he stopped and pointed the other way

In the games I have seen he has made a difference for me. Not in a wow, what a brilliant performance kind of way but things we were doing wrong stopped (or heavily reduced). When we had that shocker 45 v LP, he came on at half time and they no longer found it piss easy to cut through us.
If we don't sign a DM this week, he has to start v Leicester for me

Yeah, I’d be playing Donck and neves at Leicester. Moutinho is a fantastic player to have as a rotation option, just not sure he’ll settle for that

The referee was a clown show. End of. The standard of refereeing in the English game is generally fucking appalling and when you compare it to the refereeing in the Euros it is beyond a joke how we get it so badly wrong so much of the time. The people in charge of refereeing in this country all need sacking (or shooting) and replacing with people who know something about football.

As sad as it is to say, I'd rather he move back home now. He's not right for how we need to play, and is on a massive wage that he's just not justifying anymore.

I’d rather still have him in the squad. It’s not like his legs are totally gone, and he’s still a wonderful footballer. Just shouldn’t play 90 minutes every week. Bruno would definitely value having him around for this year

Yeah i agree, we hardly have any midfielders as it is without getting rid of another, and one that commands enormous respect.

I also genuinely think he could be our next manager, and that excites me (irrational as it is).

Yeah Moutinho can be class for us still if we use him properly and not run him into the ground and expect 90 mins out of him week in week out.

I agree, but that £100k p/w could be better used IMO

I am going against the grain here but I thought it was a pen, albeit from the footage above, maybe in the PL you get a better view but from that view it looked a pen

View from behind the goal, no contact at all.
Refs POV it looks a pen all day so can see why it was given. If VAR is in use and they use all shots available it is ruled out and then the Celta player who acted as if his leg had been ripped off is allowed to be slapped by Saiss...

Saiss still should not be sticking his foot in from the wrong side. It gave moron Moss a decision to make and he was consistent with almost every decision he has made as a referee. He fucked it up. Utterly incompetent barrel shaped muppet.

Numerous things we got wrong leading up to Moss making his call.

Saiss has been a great signing for Wolves at 2m and he has done an admirable job in numerous positions but we cannot afford to rely on him as a starting CB this season and the fact that we are going into Saturday and he's in our best 11 is criminal really. Unbelievable that the position hasn't been strengthened in 4 seasons.

Watching on the Wolves stream you could see second half it was like playing a 3241 at times. Raul would be pressing from the top but then the wingers were tucked in and the WBs pushed on in line with them, midfielders pushed up and it very narrow (or looked it) and so it meant the space was condensed and opposition players were turning into a man whereever they went.

It was vaguely similar to the way I remember Uruguay used to set up when Alvero Rios played, he'd play as a DM but sweep into the wingback defensive positions so the wingbacks would play as auxiliary attackers.
