Rugby League Thread

I am somewhat baffled by Wayne Bennett's selection as our national head coach though.

So was McNamara...

I think it's pretty hard to argue that the NRL is anything apart from vastly better than our super league at the moment. 2 years running our champions have been soundly beaten, in fact of all 6 games only Wigan went close in their game last year.

The Aussies have better back play, with our wetter weather and 'tradition' of the game being a winter sport the tendency is to use the forwards more. You could see that in the Leeds game where they were undone by several classy moves by the backs.

Leeds were also undone by some pretty basic errors. Dropping a bomb and not under any pressure, Ryan Hall and Callum Watkins attempts at tackling, both far too high.

Strange tactic to kick with the wind in the first half too.

Great win for Castleford with a try at the death to beat Hull. Tight game and entertaining, either team could have won. Castleford are one of my favourite teams to watch, Luke Gayle and the team love to keep the ball alive and are very entertaining.

Wigan triumph over Salford in a tough game, both teams playing on short rest period from previous ties, Salford only having played Sunday

Wins for Saints against Hull KR and Warrington carry on a strong start to
The season with a good win vs Wakefield

Still early days but Salford Red Devils look like they could be a surprise package this season.

Fucking ell what a game, unlucky for Salford but unbelievable finish from the Wolves.

One of the best finishes ever and I missed the second half! It was an entertaining game (at least the first half) but surely some questions to be asked of the defence on both sides.

Salford have had a cracking start and will be a much better team this season, unlucky against Wigan and Warrington who are looking like real challengers this season. Ben Currie is looking some player

Widnes looking good, not keen on the artificial pitch though.

Dennis Betts was a cracking player, he's got them playing some great stuff and Kevin Brown who i always liked seems to be relishing it there. Hull were abject the second half though and looked tired after a tough game against Wigan

The artificial pitch will help prevent the mudbaths that slow the game so much by sapping the energy out the players. It'll suit Widnes who like to play the ball around keep it alive.

I think Widness will have a strong season, but like Castleford they probably lack the depth of squad needed to sustain a top challenge - its nice to see the league is so open this year, will look forward to tonight against Leeds.

I shall be watching Wigan vs Whinos in the White Horse, St Saviour. Interesting fixture.

Good win for Wigan, in truth they ground Leeds down with relentless pressure and when Leeds tired offered a bit more in their attacking play, a couple of off loads made all the difference

Leeds having a slow start to the season, a few injuries and adjusting to loosing a few players at the end of a great season, seems to be taking a bit of time to get adjusted. I fully expect them to be there or there abouts come the run in

Not the best advert for the game but a hard result and one that helps ease the pain of last years grand final

I thought that it was a good game to watch and thoroughly enjoyed it. There again, any game where the Whinos get beat is ALWAYS a good game to watch.

The second half was better, when the players tired and found some more space on the park

The first half was enjoyable in that it was a great display of pressure but some basic errors and held back the score, although Manfredi's run was exceptional and deserved the try.

I would have thought you would have wanted Leeds to win with your username, do you follow any team or just have an interest?

Firstly I am not originally from leeds and secondly I'm a Hunslet season ticket holder.

Great try involving Manfredi, the interview with him at the end was hilarious.

Unfortunately I couldn't hear his interview in the pub. A superb run from him to set up Wigan's first.

He said 'fucking' and when he realised what he had said, said 'shit'.

Yes - it was a very 'honest' interview! He's a young lad who's just had the snot kicked out of him for 80 minutes. I expect they get trained to interview but they do come across a bit more honest than the drivel footballers spout
