Sheffield United 1 - 0 Wolves: The Verdict

Coady has played every minute of premier league football since promotion. I don’t remember him missing a minute in the Europa. And I think he was ever present in the Championship season. So unless he missed a league cup game say I reckon he is on nearer 160-170 straight appearances.

Missed one in the LC this season I think?

He was excellent yesterday.

Since Nuno took over he's missed Yeovil at home in the League Cup, Southampton away in the League Cup, Swansea away in the FA Cup, Burton away in the Championship, Reading at home in the League Cup and Villa away in the League Cup.

He didn't play at Villa in the League Cup and was suspended v Burton in the Championship. Aside from that, I believe he's played every minute of every game as you say.

Edit, Dan has a more comprehensive list.

I think we need to really look at this small squad approach. We don't have anywhere to go right now, I'd rather have an inferior option that no option.

I'm of the opinion a fresh squad player will be better than a knackered first teamer. Centre mid and centre forward we definitely need better options - even if they're not great options we still need something.

I don't think the small squad is the problem. It's either the lack of quality in it or Nuno's lack of trust which is the issue depending on how you view it. I have a foot in both camps.

As I mentioned last night - I wouldn't want either Mousset or Zivkovic here but what they did was offer a different option to Sharp and McBurnie. So their original plan wasn't working and they had the ability to change it up (even if it was a bit industrial, not having a go at them for that though in that weather, you do what you have to). We can't do that, we don't have any viable alternative to Raul, let alone someone who plays the role differently.

Easier said than done though, not that many players will volunteer to sit on the bench most weeks and you don't want to go wasting money on crap.

I don't think it's a lack of trust. He's had no problem giving Vinagre for example a run in the side. I just think that Nuno doesn't like to disrupt the game too much. It's a clear philosophy of ours, we've gone through games before without making a single substitute.

If we're being honest Buur, Jordao, Campana and possibly Kilman wouldn't get on many benches.

We had viable options though - Vinagre, podence and MGW are capable of putting fresh energy in as subs. It’s just a choice not to use them.

It might well have been the conditions and the physicality of Sheff Utd ghat prevented Nuno giving Podence, MGW or Vinagre a go last night

A combination of these two posts is where I'm at. In a small squad we still have fillers (at this stage of their careers), but there are players who could get used more that don't

Maybe - but podence for Traore would have allowed us to keep the 3 up top that was preventing sheff Utds defenders pushing up. Vinagre could have replaced Doc or Jonny who looked tired (Jonny played ok, and docs heading ability was really useful defensively, but he would certainly have added energy and pace). MGW could have replaced Moutinho who had probably his worst game for us (from a very high previous standard) and he looked tired.

We looked tired and got penned back - it didn’t have to be that way - Nuno is in massive credit, but he could have made better decisions last night imo.

The Podence thing is, to me, a clear red herring after how long Nuno waited to let Dendoncker see any significant playing time.

I find it hard to believe that we can't find a striker of such ability that sits somewhere between Capana and Raul, who can be trusted with maybe 10-15 starts and 10-15 sub appearances, given our aim is to play 55-60 games a season. Same goes for cm and rwb.

We probably can in the case of the striker, it's persuading them to play that role.

Less of an excuse with the other two positions as with midfield you're always likely to get games somewhere along the line, and at RWB if you're any good you'd back yourself to be better than Doc.

Goodness me, didn't look at the table last night as too depressed. Only just saw it flash up on the TV as Spurs drew. Hadn't realised the Blades were only a point behind us. Chris Wilder has done an absolutely superb job there

Agree with this.

When called upon Kilman, Vinagre, Neto have all done good jobs for us in varying ways.

Think on Podence last night he had barely trained with the squad and hasn't had many minutes anyway so would have been asking a lot. I think Nuno just wanted him to be with the squad so we made a big deal to get him involved and feel a part of it. Seems very important him, making sure squad harmony is right.

Tbf I'd have taken this position with four games to go at the start of the season!

Also good opportunity for us this weekend and midweek to make things a lot easier for us with the next two fixtures Arsenal and Sheffield United have
