Can someone explain to me why the FA Cup does replays instead of just having us go to extra time today?

Anyway, a desperate first half followed by a breathless second. Really didn't look like happening but we managed it, just.

Not sure we deserve a replay but at least we fought back so there's that. Our fringe players need to show more urgency in the replay. Not many come out of this with any credit but Doc and Traore did OK and Jiminez perked us up.

MOTM Doc

It has been like that forever.

You would have loved it when I was a kid. There were no penalty shoot outs at all.

1978-1979 Third Round I can remember a third round tie going to a FOURTH replay before Arsenal won it.

Strange old game. It didn't look like we were light on effort or that we were complacent, but just never quite got going. Two shocking goals to concede - the first is a really weak loss of possession and then Ruddy has to save that, then the second is a freeish header about eight yards out.

Of course if there isn't a joke non-decision in the first half then we probably go 1-0 up and it's an entirely different story, but we can't hide behind that. MGW and Costa were poor throughout, especially Costa - seems weak in body and mind now. This should have been an opportunity to build confidence, totally missed. Traore looked ok when we put him on the right in our ALL THE FORWARDS shape towards the end but in a front two he is shite. And we play a front two now, so where does that leave us?

Doherty was our best player by quite some way and deserved his goal.

Oh well. Still in it. Will surely win the replay. Teams who win the cup generally get away with one along the way... :D

We weren't brilliant, we conceded a couple of sloppy goals but we kept going.
The back up players need to do more and don't get me started on Costa. WTF has happened to him?

One thing Nuno has instilled in this team is it ain't over till it's over

Not the best Saturday afternoon I’ve had really, it was a pretty awful match. Costa looks done, I just can’t understand what’s happened to him. Only Doherty really ‘shone’ out of all the starting XI and MGW looked way out of sorts. Ruddy shouldn’t be getting beat from that angle deflection or not, and it went right above his head.

Did we deserve a draw? Maybe not, but we got it eventually after Raul coming on changed the game, but it leaves me a little concerned that with the formation change to two up top we’ve got nobody behind Jota and Raul who can play up there effectively.

We either need to play Traore on the right or not play him at all.

We'd have won this easily if we had played a proper 3-4-3.

This nonsense of pretending we don't need more players and are good enough needs to stop. We have one player able to play in the middle. It's nonsense. Same goes for our lack of cover at the back. It's pure arrogance.

First half we were pedestrian, second half we were the better team. More possession, more chances and better chances.

Traore is a right winger, nothing else.
Costa needs some bollocks about him, if he had Jotas attitude he'd be a very different player
Ruddy confirmed why he's back up...twice
MGW isn't a false nine, I'm not sure what he is though
Saiss is glacially slow, but we knew that
Coady didn't score an own goal

Seeing some on other forums slating Cav, thought he got an assist for our first, was he that bad?

I missed the first 40 minutes on dads taxi duty - was Traore on the left or right first half?

We definitely need another striker - I’m hoping for one before the end of the window.

Good chance the replay will be picked for TV.

Anyway, terrible performance today and it says something that we needed to bring on the likes of Moutinho & Raul to get anything from a lower league outfit. I hope Nuno has learnt a few lessons today (I think he learns something every game).

Poor showing from MGW today, and I'm really concerned by Costa. He just looks totally out of his depth & bereft of any sort of form and/or confidence at all. I'm also slightly concerned that Neves' performance levels in general seem to dip against 'lesser opposition'. He should have been running the show today and he was poor.

Pleased for Adama - two assists and a good showing from him. I would almost certainly start with Raul and Traore in the replay.

Front two with Costa, both were very poor but Adama was probably the worse of the pair. Put one 10 yards over from 10 yards out.

Him and Costa swapped in the Raul / Jota roles. Neither could do it on either side.

Can only agree with the above: if we're playing two up top, Traore cannot be one of them. In fact, I might even go so far as to say that if we're playing two up front, then it has to be Raul and Jota. None of the rest fit that for me.

I don't want to get too super negative because for sure we could pick the bones out of that one for a while. First, fair play to Shrewsbury as they gave it a decent go, didn't really create what you'd call clear chances but once they got their noses in front they did a good job of keeping us at arms length. Their second was an excellent corner as well.

Doc played well in fits and spurts, was certainly our biggest threat 1st half. Traore kept plugging away and once he went wide right, as DW said, he picked up. To be fair (and I realise this has its own thread) his supporters will tell you that's where he should play, and it seems that is correct. But, as DW also said, it doesn't fit what we're doing right now. So he's going to have to adapt if he wants game time as we can't build around one player who is, to be kind, inconsistent. Raul and Cav looked lively when they came on.

The rest of it...oof. I'll keep it brief and say I don't want Saiss in the back 3 anytime after Tuesday as his penchant for going to ground scares the bejesus out of me. Neves looked like he was trying to stroll through the game and it didn't happen. Costa...I don't even know anymore. It's like things came so easily to him before and now they don't, but he's not willing to work to make things happen. So you have a player who doesn't try but doesn't have enough natural ability to get by without doing so...which is basically the worst of both worlds. Makes it worse since we know what he can do. Maybe he needs a fresh start.

Not sure what was going on with the crowd but some of the pictures looked a bit iffy. Be interested to hear from anyone who was there.

-edit- few people have made similar points so obviously not *just* DW, to be clear. I need to type faster!

edit: double post

Neves wasn't helped by Dendoncker having by far his worst appearance yet, although it is a bit chicken and egg really.
