Societal collapse?

All economic systems eventually collapse and are replaced. Capitalism will collapse as it is a system hell bent on growth and wealth hoarding to the benefit of the minority. Growth cannot keep happening and the capitalist desire for growth is leading to the destruction of the planet that will eventually inevitably cause its collapse. George Monbiot did a brilliant piece outlining how it is a certainty that capitalism will cause its own destruction.

I would counter that consumer capitalism is the greater risk to the planet

I’m really not sure what your point is here? A capitalist economy grow by increasing consumption of goods, so growth and consumerism go hand in hand. Consumer capitalism is a red herring. Capitalism is capitalism and sure is eggs is eggs striving for continuous growth and increasing the wealth of the 1% is going to destroy the planet or destroy capitalism. And I for one don’t think the wealth hoarding bastards will stop until they end up destroying themselves. But in the meantime they will have lived their best lives so fuck everyone else and fuck the future. They don’t care.

Wrote three separate replies, one purely on those last two sentences alone, and then I thought, whats the point ?

I'm genuinely concerned about what kind of world my daughters will inherit.

In 35 years time they'll be my age, a lot of good needs to happen in that time.

Same mate I spend an awful lot of time worrying about this for my children. God knows what the world's going to end like towards the end of this century. Just hope the last 80 odd years of relative goods times haven't been a blip.

That generation have it all to do. Cleaning up after the boomers. It may well be an impossible task.

I am always impressed by how socially responsible kids seem to be nowadays. Hopefully it'll carry over into adulthood and the world will change for the better. There's so much undeserved shit dumped on the youngsters from the older generations I find. It might have always been that way I don't know.

It's not just the boomers, though, it's everyone's responsibility.

I try to only buy the things I need, get second hand stuff whenever I can, cut down on the amount of plastic - especially single use plastic, be as efficient as possible, solar panels on the house, walk rather than drive etc but it all feels so insignificant.

We need mass behavioural change at a society level for this to work but I just think the general public doesn't care enough.

Needs major govt action. It's too big for people to solve on their own.

Agreed, but I fear govts only respond to what people want. Environmental policies will be unpopular, I don't see any govt pushing them forward unless people want them.

Its a sad fact that most people don't give a shit until things starting directly affecting them. Climate change will cause untold misery to alot of the developing world before the really bad shit starts here, by then it might be too late.

Hopefully there will be some sort of meaningful international agreement at this upcoming climate change summit, November I think it is. Until countries like China stop using so much coal the situation is unlikely to improve.

It’s the US use of coal you want to look out for. Thankfully the ousting of the orange baby might see that being somewhat more controlled.
