Southampton 0-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

Traore left Podence right is the way to go until Neto is back.
RAN in all day for Marcal. I would have Donk and Neves, not Moutinho. Back three looked pretty fine. We should be ok for the squad we have .

I might have missed it, but so far no one other than Tony Adams and myself have given some credit to Coady, he was excellent, as was Saiss and Kilman (shite pass aside)

Semedo defended well too, only issue is Marcal.

I'll take winning ugly if its in isolation but the game management was really poor once we had the lead, for me it was like a team down to 10 men defending for their lives.

I'd have introduced Neves instead of Traore who was never going to be in a position to influence the game (and duly didnt) then had Neves Donk and Moutinho in midfield and Raul up front with one of Podence and Hwang supporting in a 352/532

Delighted for Raul, I said he needed a lucky one to get started but I think what we saw today was him channelling all thst inner frustration and letting it all out. If he's firing we're vastly better for it.

Sa is a funny one isnt he? Still gives me kittens sometimes but we don't score the goal or make that clearance with Rui last year. Rui is undoubtedly better but Sa's biggest strengths aren't a part of Rui's game so comparing them isnt as cut as dry as you'd think.

If that performance is isolated then ill take it but if its replicated in games to come we're invariably going to end up in trouble.

Means nothing in terms of today’s game, though. I thought they were awful.

Well you were talking about them struggling this season, the game today doesn't exist in isolation?

I'm just saying they may well struggle but they've literally proven in their last game that they're not fodder.

They held United and the Hammers here also

Sa was excellent. There’s no way Rui would have got to the ball over the top. Even though he was out of shot I was confident Sa would appear in time and he did - just!

Delighted for Raul, lovely finish from a low , flat kick that Rui couldn’t have produced even if he was inclined to play it early.

A scrappy game of low quality but a massive three points. A win against Newcastle and things start to look a lot brighter.

They all defended well IMO. Kilman's dodgy pass aside, and Coady getting caught flat-footed and playing their left winger onside for one attack which luckily came to nothing.

Saints were really poor and their fans let them know it at the end. But they're a good shop window and you could easily see Livramento and Djenpo at much better teams next season, both caused us a fair few problems. A few of theirs have gone one to top Italian & Spanish sides lately so they're no mugs.

Get in Raul though, so pleased for the man. Looked smoked at the end, ran himself ragged all game. Hwang too -lots of tracking back, great to see.

No-one's saying it was a vintage performance, but Jesus, I'd hate to see the matchday and verdict threads if we'd lost or drawn.

This could be an important step for the new manager and his team, we weren't clicking with a different line-up and pressure following two defeats, but defended well, took our chance and beat a team that were ahead of us in the table before the game on their own patch.

Go and have a beer and enjoy a warm Sunday afternoon guys, ffs! 😅

Oh mate, I'm delighted with today. We weren't at our best, but didn't really come under too much pressure. It's sunny out, I'm donning my shirt and going for a stroll with a big smile.

Agree 100%. We shithoused a win which we've all been saying we need to do. It wasn't pretty but it can mean a lot to the players and manager who on the balance of play in at least 3 of the games deserved more.
I'll take it all day long at the moment..

Great 3 points and great to see Raul score. He needed that, even one off his backside but to score one of that quality, even better! Sa played his part too.

Speaking of Sa, good to see his anticipation for the one over the top. Yeah wouldn't have stood anyway but he didn't know that, was good to see him deal with it.

Not the best of performances but it was 3 points and a clean sheet, better than constantly being the plucky losers

Just happy for the three points, not a good game of football that

Two bang-average sides playing bang-average football separated by one piece of magic in our favour. I'll take that all day long at the moment.

Nice to grind one out and get the result we probably didn't deserve on the balance of play. Makes up for the ones where we didn't get anything and deserved to. If we beat Newcastle next week, that'd be a solid start to the Lage era.
That is something we certainly need to do, or this game was wasted.

Was a bit of a Nuno performance today but we needed the win so let’s move on and play better next week. Trincao should be starting on the right and one of Podence or Traore on the left. Hwang can be an impact sub for now, though he’s better centrally imo. Have two wing backs who are offensively so poor definitely hampers us in this formation.
