Stats and Analysis Thread

I looked up Rui's stats today and it made me sad.

He does have worldie saves in him but he lets in more than he should.

Fulham have their keeper on loan I think? Could be an opportunity
No real arguing with those stats. Can't really say he's outstanding in any other areas to compensate either

He is the greatest keeper in the history of the Portugal national team. Fucks sake.

He probably is, but that doesn't take away that the stats show he's been well below where he should be.

The shots he's faced have been the "easiest" to save and he's performed poorly in saving them.

You say "makes it", but then consider that of the 20 players with a better success rate than him, 75% of them cost/would cost peanuts compared to his fee and wages. We've basically spent £35m on somebody that's a marginally better defender than Matty Lowton

The horizontal axis is pretty meaningless, defenders can't control how often they are taken on, it's the vertical one that counts

It does show that if targeted they are pretty much a wall (and the bottom axis seems to reflect that). Managers mistakenly try to target Godfrey by the looks of things, which is a mistake by the look of the stats. Coufal being targeted looks a better option as does Lowton.

Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma have the best stats but nobody tries to take them on as the success rate is smaller.

How do they measure it would be another question, I mean Neto doesn't beat Zouma as such here but the big lug does nothing of any value and we score.

It is a very Interesting thread. Rui does not come out of this well. It appears some of the criticism is very well founded. Equally, I am surprised that Semedo makes the top 30 defenders. Perhaps he is doing better than its seemed and some of the comments he has attracted are not as well founded.

There is a different stat for blocking shots. I think sometimes we can get immersed in stats that don't mean anything in isolation.

The one you highlight is clearly an issue, why would you want to dribble past Zouma when you can get your shot off without doing that. With the defenders being dribbled past, who often does it lead to a goal/ cross/ freekick of note?

Depends on where the 45% of losses are and the impact of that

If I'm a manager and looking at Semedo on film I would be targeting him if I wanted to create at least one goal scoring opportunity a game and the stats do bear that out.

I wouldn't be targeting Godfrey even if I thought he could be got at because the stats are so low, that doesn't mean a team wouldn't have a go in a game but I wouldn't expect it to be a focused tactic.

Best I don’t say I told you so re Patricio. It will only start a fuss🤣🤣🤣

i don't think you need to see a graph to know he's had a poor season, in the same way you don't need to see one to know he had a very good one last year

Fair point. The issue I have is that Nuno now shows blind faith in him in spite of performance. He had a good run of games in February but is now back off the boil as he was from November to January pretty much.
Is it because he is unchallenged? I don’t know. We have two very good goalkeepers and one is out of form. In a normal world you give the other a chance. See Man Utd for details.
