Summer 2021 transfer window

There are 3 key positions for me.

CB - someone quick, good 1v1 defensively and can pass the ball forwards. I think you put someone like that next to Boly you have a good partnership. Simakan fits that profile it seems, we’ve been linked with Todibo before too which wouldn’t surprise me. I really rate Konate at Leipzig and thought he might go under the radar but sounds like Liverpool want him.

CM - someone who can progress the ball through dribbling or passing, and can do the defensive work required alongside Neves. I watched Kessie for Milan recently and realised he is exactly what we need. Soumare maybe can do some of those things who we have been linked with before

winger/attacking mid/forward - essentially a Jota type in that he can effectively play those positions either way, and gives us better cover. If we play 4231 our options don’t have enough depth as there is only 3 of them currently.

I think we will definitely sign Ait Nouri personally. Less sure about Vitinha but think we may well do. WJ as long as he isn’t a dud basically (though I have concerns about the fee and signing a player his age on a long ish contract).

It appears we have plenty of room for spending if the Chanpionship losses no longer matter though

I've said a few times that we should have been going for Morgan Sanson before now.

People said he's too similar to Moutinho (which he isn't, that much) but now the same people are crying out for a potential replacement.

He's better than Vitinha who is going to cost us £20m but I think that Vitinha is a transfer that benefits the Wolves/Mendes carousel more than the team IMO.

The problem is we don’t really know how good any of the current ones will be in a 4. Boly is probably good enough, Coady probably not, Saiss maybe and I’ve no idea about Kilman. I suspect we’ll go with 5 until we limp over the line and then it will be too late to play 4 and make a proper assessment. I suspect with the right partner Saiss and Kilman would be ok but I’m not convinced that Boly is that man.
Boly, Saiss and even Coady to an extent aren't getting any younger and I can see some of them being moved on this summer whilst they still have value.

It's unrealistic, but as an example, a Dias like CB would be tremendous for us (as he would for most teams). Its really GK and CB where I see the biggest difference being made, the rest of the team kinda looks at least ok-ish. A new GK and CB could help us transform some of the marginal results

I don’t think we need a cm AND a box to box unless we lose Neves, we need a box to box cm with the ability to contribute in the opposition area.

one midfielder, one centre back.

If we are replacing Moutinho and Donk we need both

think you are underestimating the reputation Vitinha has by the way. We haven’t seen the performances yet from him in limited minutes but he’s clearly got a lot of technical ability. I think it’s a physical issue for him, he would need time - so it just depends if we are prepared to wait (a fair debate)

If we get the centre midfielder signing right it takes the pressure off of Donck who doesn’t have to play all the time. Same with Moutinho, could just have small cameos and start in cup games for example.

Buying highly rated youngsters is great, but last summer we dropped a potential £75m on Silva, Vitinha and RAN. That is going to restrict what we can do this summer when we badly need one or two important first team recruitments.

I’d sell Donk, and one of the centre backs, we don’t want a huge squad, and the youngsters we’ve signed will need minutes next season.

plus we’re already spending quite a bit making the loans permanent so need to recoup somewhere.

But by the sounds of it we can afford to do both? That’s the impression I got.

Let's be honest, Moutinho is done and MGW isn't good enough
I think moutinho would be fine for 20 minutes at the end of games to settle them down, he just can’t be relied upon to be a first choice player as he is now.

I think MGW is good enough, he just needs to prove it.

Moutinho has had the whole season to settle things down. If he's going to be the steadying elder statesman then this is the season he needs to be doing it. He's not going to improve by the time he's 35.

We want to get back to challenging for being the 'best of the rest'. I think it's wildly optimistic to think MGW is anything other than a good Championship/lower PL player at best. Don't we want more than that?

I don't think the squad is too bad to be honest. Assuming we keep all the young potential and add in some ready to go quality players I think we'll be in a decent place.

As Ive already said GK, CB and a progressive midfielder. Problem is finding the players!

I hope we keep the kids and develop them.

I'd agree about MGW right now, but he's only just turned 21. I don't see any harm with hanging onto him for a few more seasons and loaning him out. If the same conversations are being had in 2-3 seasons time then it would be time to move him on.

It's a real shame he hasn't had a full season with Swansea, I think knowing he was playing regularly would be wonders for him

Depends on whether the budget is linked to FFP or not.

From where? Not being snipey, just would be interested to know.
Well, the top point is important! Jeff has often spoken about FFP and how we have to work within it several times.

we haven’t made a loss in the premier league yet have we? Obviously pandemic will affect things but it seems to me we will have more leeway. I think we will look for starters at CB and CM anyway, as well as maybe a young winger/forward (Olise please)

I agree with the last paragraph, but again, if we really still harbour ambitions then it's tough for young players to break in, they have to be really exceptional.

From MGWs pov, I wouldn't want to be hanging around till I'm 25 for a chance. Sometimes a player needs a new club and a manager who believes in him.
