Summer 2022 Transfer Window

If we weren’t Portugal FC / Mendes FC these players would have no interest in signing for us. Nunes would have no interest in joining Brighton for example and we aren’t going to pay obscene wages like Villa are happy to do to try and make it slightly worth it for them.

As alluded to in posts above, the Mendes reliance has had its day. They don’t want to come anymore. Helped massively in the championship with Neves/Jota and to an extent Rui/Moutinho but that’s been it now. The good ones don’t want to come, the rest we could sign anyway. They don’t want to leave roles as key players at big european clubs playing in the CL to play for midtable Wolves.

Scott Sellars clearly hasn’t “scouted” Nunes, so why can’t we just do what every other club in the league does and scout attainable targets from weaker leagues or reserves from better clubs.

There is a massive fucking middle ground between Nunes and Dendoncker, who are affordable and would want to play for us. Target one of them

I reckon were unlikely to get Nunes, I reckon we should talk to Man City about Zinchenko though (as a midfielder). We could even given them first dibs on RAN as part of the deal.

Not that it would be a smart deal if we did that anyway, but if we did then surely it would have to happen the other way round (ie City would need to be offering the sweetener somewhere), we have the higher value player.

Notwithstanding that Zinchenko has already turned us down once, when we had a far better manager and looked like we were going places as opposed to bedding down into mid-table and worse, and he was getting less playing time at City.

It's been a while since I've been so down on Wolves. We've got an uninspiring manager, a deteriorating, thin squad, a laughable transfer policy and an absolute clown in charge. If we aren't battling to stay out of the bottom 6 next season I'll be amazed.

I doubt Zinchenko would be that interested in a move down the PL after having reasonable game time at City over the last few years. Assuming they don't price him out of it and he doesn't overdo his wage demands then I can see him going to someone like Leverkusen in profile, (no idea, if they need him) ie none English CL side

These sort of players are happy at the big clubs as long as they have some sort of role. Big wages, best facilities, play a reasonable number of games and win some medals. When they want to move/ get forced out is when they aren’t playing or the club don’t want them. Where the PL has the advantage here is it can pay wages other leagues can’t.

Using Zinchenko as example, an elite club are unlikely to be interested. But then Aston Villa, Everton etc are likely to be paying way more than what Leverkusen, Sevilla, Benfica, Lyon etc would pay.

Another dimension to the Nunes saga is that he uses the same agency as Marquinhos.

I can't imagine we're on great terms with them right now

That was to play primarily as a left wingback though, we’d be offering guaranteed football in his preferred position during a World Cup year.

I don’t ever see him breaking into that city midfield so will always be a bit part player for them. Probably less game time now they are actively trying to sign a left back.

Not sure it was to play at LWB, we'd already signed Jonny and made Vinagre's move permanent.

Nope, was summer 2018 when we'd first got promoted.

We hadn't signed Donck when he was close to joining, I think if he came it was to play in midfield even back then.

That makes sense then, although would he have been swapping one bench for another. We still played 343 and there’s no way he was displacing moutinho or neves at that point. In hindsight he’d have been perfect for the 352 we ended up having success with.

Only problem with that reasoning is Ukraine didn’t qualify for the World Cup

Zinchenko would be an absolutely perfect signing for us - exactly what we need - young, quick, good on the ball and versatile. Would add winning experience too.

But, again, let’s get real - the bloke probably has more trophies than our entire squad put together and so they’ll be loads of interest. Namely from either CL Clubs (abroad) or clubs ready to pay bigger bucks (Everton, Newcastle etc).

I know there’s probably loads involved and that we don’t understand but i don’t understand why we don’t sit down, identify targets and then actively go out and get them? It feels like we always wait, get into sone sort of bidding war…..and inevitably lose out.

Zinchenko for example - for me - would be the most obvious, ideal signing out there.

He’d cost £25m and, say, £120k a week.

Perfect age, ideal player and totally affordable.

Watch Newcastle sign him.
