The Advice Thread

I’d put a couple of large potted plants either side of the door to hide the dodgy paintwork and not worry about it again till next year.

Look after it this summer and you have yourself a good few fires for the winter. A nice weekend treat of keeping warm without spending thousands

A quick coarse hand sand and on with the Cuprinol it is then. Weather looks passable for the next few days so let’s see what happens.
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Show us the results when you're done mate.

Cuprinol ? Are you painting it or staining it ? Be careful if using a stain as a lot of them are translucent and you'll see whatever is on the surface underneath.

Cuprinol Shades, it says ‘Paint’ on the tin. It’s a really good point though, I did the decking in April and got myself into a right state with the oil/stain/paint conundrum. Didn’t appear to have any paint on it so just jet-washed and used Toolstation‘s ‘No nonsense deck stain’ and it came up a treat. Seems pretty durable too. The shed clearly has paint on it so just have to go like-for-like and hope for good coverage. To be honest doesn’t have to be perfect, a general uplift will do.

Well I ignored all advice and went down the manual route, I couldn’t make my kind up on a mouse sander and an orbital was too big for the work in the bedrooms. It’s been painful so far but I’m absolutely chuffed with the results.
All the door frames, architrave and skirting had massive build ups of paint from previous tenants and I only glossed over what was there when we moved in as I didn’t have time. Now all the woodwork is nearly at a point of some fine grade sanding and staining, not that I’m doing that I’ll be glossing but that’s how well they’ve turned out. Really happy with it. It’ll look like new when it’s finished instead of horrible fifty year old stuff.
My skills with a tub of filler are something to behold as well!

Sorry bit late to the party on this but I tend to use a heat gun to strip old gloss work off, worth the investment if youve got a fair bit to do. Can be quite satisfying then just a light sand down is needed.

By the sounds of it you've got yourself sorted though

Yeah I used a heat gun to strip the paint. Did me a favour really as I burnt all the edges of the carpet stripping the skirting, it's all being replaced so just makes it easier to move out the way to gloss the skirting. Fucking stunk though.

Good man, hopefully all the prep work you've put in will pay off in the end finish, it usually does. It's just the easy option to put another coat of paint on, after about 5 or 6 coats of gloss things start looking awful imo.

Yeah it will look ace once it's done. It's needed doing for years but I knew it was a big messy job and just didn't have the time. Absolutely determined to get it done now, just three skirtings left to finish in the main bedroom then on with the painting. I'm not that bothered about the the back room as when all my stuff's in there you won't see the skirting anyway.
The paint build up was horrendous, lumps and bumps everywhere, everything's got nice, clean flat lines now and some subtle chamfers on all the edges, Dulux one coat will take to it like shit to a blanket.

Before, during and after.

Quick rub down by hand, two coats of Cuprinol paint, new latch and hinges. A few bits of soft wood and a little wear and tear here and there, but should be good for some time yet. Quite an enjoyable process too so overall have to be quite happy with that.

You could have at least painted the door hinges all the same colour.

I toyed with that and could’ve just left the old ones on, but wanted to square the door up a bit which was easier with new hinges. Thought the unpainted hinges helped with the new look, but y’know, maybe not. They’ll get painted over next time anyway cos the bastards are not coming off again!

To be honest, all the hinges ARE the same colour aren't they? It's just the light making them look different?

Looks good, good size shed too, I'd live in that
Funny you should say that. Went back to Cambridge for a hospital appointment this week and couldn’t resist a drive by of the old house. That had a beauty of a shed/man cave. But the house looked like it had been turned into a HMO and was in a right sorry state. Cars everywhere, the front garden was like Matabele land. An old desk abandoned out the front. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if there were a couple of illegals living in the shed out the back too. Great shame. Life moves on but just felt sorry for the really decent neighbours. A change of neighbours can change things in the blink of an eye for all of us.

Yes, all unpainted. I did wonder if I’d misinterpreted the post, apologies.
