The Athletics Thread...

UK Sport strips badminton, archery, fencing, weightlifting and wheelchair rugby of all funding for Tokyo 2020.

Bit harsh on badminton, when they got the medal they were asked to, but funding is down from Rio.

Dina Asher Smith too in the 200m. No medal but a third PB in three days and a British record to boot. I heard her interviewed after and she is a superstar in the making.

Well done Dina. Now kick on and do it in a worldwide event.

Well done Dina. In a very select few of female GB&NI athletes have won World Championship Gold.

KJT in with a shout of gold after producing the 4th best ever 1st day score in the heptathlon. Only Joyner Kersee and Carolina Kluft (sp?) have better 1st day scores.

Absolutely delighted for Katarina Johnson-Thompson who has FINALLY got her gold medal. Unreal performance from her.

It's an amazing feat, up there with the first 4 minute mile. Really puts my marathon time of 4hrs 31 to shame...!

My view was that this was a Bannister moment for this century.

And Bannister's run was done with pacemakers, and in a specifically organised event rather than a part of the standard athletics calendar, and still counted as a world record. This mark should be regarded as a World Record. It's a nonsense that it won't be.

BTW - 4hrs 31m is still a bloody good time. I would be DELIGHTED with that, if I ever gave up the fags and booze, got fit, got back into running, found some way to ceramically seal my shitty achilles tendons together, and managed to complete 26 miles plus. And I was bloody decent at 5,000 metres and Cross Country at school before messrs Benson and Hedges, and the Rose and Crown Ivinghoe said hello.

You'd also need to be Marty McFly my friend, you're much nearer 60 than 30.

Well, a LITTLE nearer sixty than thirty...

oh good lord

12 years 7 months plays 17 years 5 months.

I am a fucking fossil.

You've known me for longer than 12 years and 7 months too. Just sayin'.

My eldest is 19 in two weeks as well. Fucks fucking sake. It's the countdown to the grave now, it really is.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy I've completed a marathon and I have no issues with my time! If I'd wanted to go faster I should have trained harder!

I only really shared it as a comparison, I'm not a terrible runner (1.47 half marathon PB) but the speeds Kipchoge was achieving for 26.2 miles was astounding!

Sorry, but seeing both Nike and Brailsford involved tarnishes the achievement for me. Not sure I believe anything I see in Athletics any longer, which is a shame.

The bloke has been nowhere near the disgraced Oregon project. And the Brailsford thing is bollocks - the man has NOTHING to do with athletics. He is only there because Ineos put the money up to make this happen and Ineos took over Sky in June. How dare you say it tarnishes the achievement with not a scintilla of evidence, let alone fucking proof? I think you are looking a right curmudgeon frankly.

Whether it was paced (and on a selected course) or not it's still an incredible feat.

Aiki - very respectable time - my elder son took somewhat longer to complete last years London Marathon (though his aim was merely to finish & raise funds)

Anyone who runs that far has my respect (as someone who struggled with anything over 400 metres I can't even contemplate that distance - though I was a fair sprinter at 100/200 m & long/triple jump when I was a little younger)

Not sure I give a flying fuck about how you feel about me telling you how you feel.
