The F1 Thread

The worst thing was the monocoque being pinned on its side up against the barrier and watching him scrabbling to wriggle out of that.

Can’t work out what he was doing, was a weird place to drive across the track into a blind spot. Scary as shit though, genuinely thought he was dead

1 of 2 things. Gret spot from Sky that some debris was heading at him so may have been a delayed reaction to that or more likely, he saw a huge gap on the outside of the track and made the move but just got it wrong

Amazing relief. Without the halo he would have been in Francois Cevert territory.
Seeing it burst into flames reminded me of Gerhard Berger’s massive accident at Tamburello 30 years ago.

Thank god for the halo I think.
100% saved his life. Without it the best that happens is he is out cold and then would have to spend over 30 seconds sat in the flames. More than likely though the head through the barrier at that speed = instant death.

Would imagine a straight decapitation looking at where it ended up wedged in the barrier on the halo. Bit concerning how far it penetrated the barrier to be fair, imagine the sudden deceleration as a result caused the car to snap in half and then flung fuel everywhere to cause the explosion.

Lucky man to get away with such minor medical concerns.

I will never moan about the aesthetics of the halo device again. Romain being able to get out of that is testament to the legacy of Dr Sid Watkins over the years

Jesus the footage of his car exit is extraordinary. Well done to everyone at the scene of the accident.

Restart and Stroll's car is upside down!!

Bottas picks up a puncture (nowhere near Kvyat though)

Shame it's turned out to be such a dull race. I've been doing something else for 20 mins, turned back on and nothing has changed around.

Good news. Could have been devastating. I'm still impressed how he managed to wriggle out of the car at that angle with fire all around him. Must have disorientated afte the impact and terrified. Self preservation kicks in I guess.

That crash and he has a couple of mild burns....David Luiz has seemingly caused more damage to a human than a man fired into a metal barrier and sat in a fireball

Pietro Fittipaldi stands in for Grosjean for the next race. Highly likely not to be one of their drivers for next year, but they weren't going to pull Schumacher from a title chase (and Mazepin has a long shot of the F2 title too, but strong rumour to be taking the other seat alongside Schumacher next year).
