The Film Thread

Ripping yarns might be on the iplayer. Think I caught one on bbc4 recently.

Be interesting, I remember loving it as a kid, but can't actually remember anything about apart from the basic premise... Watched Clockwise recently, and it held up, Fish Called Wanda is an absolute classic, so will be interested in your view on it.

Yeah really enjoyed it. The whole Cleese/Palin inspired adventure started with it, was on TV and caught 5 mins then turned it over as wanted to watch it properly from the start. The characters are class especially Otto. Funny moments where I actually laughed. Twists and turns so I didn't know what was happening. Accidentally killing the dogs off while being an animal lover is class

Ah thats a shame, still hopefully it will be a good read.

Watched The Gray Man on Netfix.

Bog standard 1980's acton fare. Gosling reprises his role from Only God Forgives and Evans has more ham than a French Charcuterie.

All in all a bit pants, especially for $200m
I really enjoyed this tbh.

Great action, great camera-work filmed on drones, some decent gags and a slick pace.
I enjoy those movies that fight their way through European cities, like Bourne Identity

Bullet Train - 6/10

A decent effort that's ultimately let down by its running time. There's a really sleek, witty action caper in there dying to get out, but it's a bit bloated and had a few too many characters to deal with. It had some really good action scenes and comic moments though.

White people in failing to adapt Asian cinema shocker.

Seriously, we're really bad at that.

I thought the Ring was a decent adaptation.
It’s the ‘white people’ bit.

I hope Alan means Hollywood and not just the colour of somebody’s skin.

Plenty of foreign language films Hollywood have fucked up in remakes as well as some great remakes.

The Ring and The Departed, Vanilla Sky being good and Oldboy, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Grudge being bad

You might want to look at your Netflix subscription mate. Sounds like you're paying too much...

I find this type of remark pathetic.
It’s mildly tongue in cheek but I do raise an eyebrow at adaptations that stretch cultural boundaries in that way.

But, to your point, I'll be more specific in the future. But your sense is right, IMV "white people" == "well-to-do westerners".

Been watching Wes Anderson films. So far have watched Life Aquatic, Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket and Moonrise Kindgom. Moonrise Kingdom by far my favourite so far. Love his style, deffo sticks to it throughout. Going to watch Rushmore/Darjeeling then rewatch Fantastic Mr. Fox/Grand Budapest Hotel as only seen them once and can't remember them.

Love Wes Anderson. Not a bad apple in the bunch.

I used to like his old stuff, but his new ones are dire.

Rewatched The Raid 1 & 2 today, brilliant films if you’re into martial arts and extreme violence.

Just started The Northman, looks OK in the first twenty minutes.
